Finally have my absolutely adorable sheepie! Hes 5 months old now and I am using a crate. The one I have was borrowed and was find when we brought him home. Im looking to purchase a crate for long term...can anyone suggest the proper size? I dont want to invest in one and then realize I need a larger size. Hes gonna be a big boy! Thanks for your help.... -d |

Will you be crating him while away all day at work or just for short periods of time? We have a variety of crate sizes here and for male OES, a 42" crate is the smallest one I would recommend. It's good for short-term crating, such as overnight or at shows and events. Definitely get a 48" if you will keep him crated all day. If I had lots of room, I'd have a 54" Great Dane crate for the added freedom but few have the luxury of space. |
Same as what Nita said! I have a variety of crates here, and luckily can use the ones I need for various dogs and purposes |
We have two Sheepies and they both enjoy ample accommodations of the 48" X 36" X 30" size. These have been used for fully grown adult male who peaked at 105lbs and with the included divider we started our puppy out in it when she came home at 8 weeks. Buy big knowing they'll grow into it. Vance |
Congrats on your new puppy! What is his name? We use the 42" crate here too. But my three are never crated for a long period of time so the size works well here. My biggest boy is 115lbs and is a little taller than the average sheepie. He is almost 10 years old and still likes to go in his crate now and then, but if I were really using the crate often with him I would go 48" or 54". |
Instead of a buying another crate here once Dahlia outgrew hers, we opted for a exercise area/playpen instead. You may not have room, but, I thought I would suggest what we do. We bought 2 of these. We use one in our bedroom---yes, it takes up 1/2 of our bedroom but, we don't care, and the other one, we gave 6 panels to my in-laws who keep it at their house for when Dahlia is there and the extra 2 panels, we keep those as a gate across our front porch.... It was the best investment we made for sure! Dahlia gets put in her play area when we are not home. She has free run of the house if we are here and at night, so it is only used if are both out or if she needs a time-out, rest time etc. It gives us piece of mind that she is in a large enclosed area and can't get into trouble. http://www.dogkennels.com/dog-kennels/dog-exercise-pens/48inultimateexercisepenblack.cfm |
For some dogs, the ex-pen works great. Others... not so much. For some dogs, even a regular crate won't stop them from getting into things. If you have anything dangerous or precious in your home that the dog may get into, be sure it's well out of reach. Even our crate is kept in a heated/air conditioned sunroom with a sliding glass door between it and the house. That's where any escape artists are kept while we're away even short-term. Know your dog and always think ahead to prevent a disaster. |
We use the 42" crate but Kenny is a little more compact then most sheepies and we figured he would be with the size of his parents. He has plenty of room but i would probably recommend 48" if he's already trending larger! |
Thank you all for the info....I think I am going to go with the larger size...I only crate him at night and a few hours during the day...otherwise he has full run of my house. He's going to be a big boy..his parents were both very big...he's just 5 months and is 32 pounds. As everyone else says about their sheepies...he is absolutely adorable...just need to teach him my arm is not a chew toy! His name is Bode...would love to post pics, but cant figure it out lol... -d |
