Could it just be from her allergies? She's actually notttttt scratching for the first time OR licking but that stopped as soon as this water drinking occurred. I think she's still struggling with her food because I just can tell (eyes red and when I pet her belly ...her legs start kicking) ...so it's almost like her thirst come before her desire to scratch?? It's not like Yuki to be like this. She's drinking out of the toilets, drinking the kid's bath water, and every time I finish giving her water... she stands in front of the bowl for more. She has NEVER drank toilet water ...and definitely hasn't shoved herself in front of the bathtub (the place she hates) to drink that water. No panting, nothing... |

Excessive drinking can be a sign of diabetes or diabetes insipidous. Or just a reaction to the heat. Is she on any allergy medication? Mine makes me very thirsty. Is she peeing a lot too or is she retaining the extra water? I would take her in for a check up. |
Not peeing more at all. Actually less than normal. Let me rephrase.... she HAD been peeing one or two times more when she was on prednisone during the move (1/4th of a normal 20mg tablet ONCE a day ...so practically nothing and only for a few days) ...but she is no longer on that. She she pees in the morning, lunch, dinner, and at night which is normal for her. |
... or possibly even Cushing's Disease. Don't panic but best to have Yuki checked out, Jo. Could be nothing, too. Maybe she hasn't adjusted to Texas yet. |
When Simon was drinking a lot, it was his kidneys - compensating from his heart disease issues. But he also was peeing a lot. Yuki must be peeing more, as what goes in must come out. Maybe she has a good bladder and just can hold it longer than Simon could. I would take her in. Sounds like she needs a urine check and some basic bloodwork... something is out of balance. |
Quote: I would take her in. Sounds like she needs a urine check and some basic bloodwork... something is out of balance My thoughts exactly. Whenever I take an older, especially MO, in that's the first thing I'm asked, "Is she drinking more?" Time for a urine and blood work up. Hate to say it, but The Yukster is becoming an "older." |
Scheduled an appt but unfortunately it's not until Friday. Everyone I called was packed tight. Hopefully she's okay. If it gets worse or there are other symptoms, I'll drive her to my mom's home where there should be more options. |
for good results, but best to have her checked out thoroughly. |
Hope all is well when you have her checked. Thoughts will be with you Friday! |
Hi, I agree I think you need a vets visit. Try phoning and saying its an emergency, they have urgent appointments at the end of the day. Digby started with excessive drinking with his heart problem several years ago. Just meant heart tablets and water tablets. I hope its not that, it could be a reaction to something like pollen? or just a flu? Good luck but persist with appointment Liz and Digby xxx |
All the above. Have blood and urine checked... maybe add on a thyroid check if it hasn't been done in a while. Hoping all checks out good! |
Bring pee in a cup. Probably hard to do for a girl, but they'll want to check specific gravity and some other things in her urine. |
Poor Yuki. Hope all is well, and she is just "really thirsty". Did she just start this when you moved? Hugs to Yuki-- and you too. Bless your heart, it's always something isn't it. |
I actually wonder if it is this vegetarian diet. ...that's when an increase started. Just not CRAZY obsessed with drinking 24-7. It's just sick. I mean, she follows the kids to the bathroom and tries to stick her head in the toilet when they go. If I don't give her water... she seems fine too. ...just if she hears water on, sees water, anything... she becomes obsessed with getting it. And still no increase in pee even after drinking all day. Normally an increase in water DOES mean she pees more (past history with uti's, steroids, etc). |
I'm glad you have an appt for Friday, but if you start to see any other odd things going on, I would try to get her in sooner. The three thoughts that immediately popped into my head are the same as those above; diabetes, Cushing's, or a kidney problem. The new diet might be causing the increased thirst, but then that does not explain the lack of increase in output, though it's possible that she is going out the same number of times, and peeing like Seabiscuit when she does. You might want to try measuring both intake and output, if possible. Use a Pyrex measuring cup when you fill her dog bowl and keep track of her intake. Then put one under her while she's peeing, if she'll let you. (This is alot easier with a male!) What color is her urine? Clear? Slightly yellow? Dark? That might give you some clues as well. Hope all goes well with the vet visit. Laurie and Oscar |
Realize Bette covers at least 3 large western states with her rescue. Just a little plug: http://oesrescueofcolorado.org/donate.html If you have a Paypal account........ I'm heading there now..... |
Strange and disconcerting behavior! I agree with all the advice and wish you could get her in sooner. I hope she is ok. How is Yuki doing? |
Please update us with the Vets opinion xxx Thinking about you x Liz and Digby xxx |
Her appt is at 9 this morning ...and it hasn't gotten worse. Her allergies have though. I'm starting to think she's wanting more water b/c she's so itchy and uncomfortable. The bridge of her nose is super red and so are her eyes which isn't usually the case, and there's "her" normal amount of licking from those allergies. So, I'm starting to think she's fine, but I'll still ask for bloodwork, etc |
the vet finds out what is wrong with Yuki today. Good luck. |
It was uneventful ...which is a good thing!! Her kidney's must be doing well because it's holding that pee well according to the vet. Did a urine test (thanks for reminding me to bring some) and ...what do you know... the girl with chronic uti's ....has a uti. Just isn't her typical style of behavior!! Otherwise (since it wasn't diabetes or kidneys) ...the vet said some foods have something in it that actually makes them drink more water. |
Good news then since an antibiotic should clear it up. Yuki's had chronic UTIs? Maybe ask whether keeping her on a cranberry capsule daily, given with the last meal of the day so it stays in the system overnight, would help. Of course ask your vet first to see if it's appropriate! This is the one Cootie @ 50 pounds gets with dinner every night... she just had her annual blood and urine tests and all is good. (She had a higher urinary ph and crystals.) http://www.naturesway.com/Products/Herb ... Fruit.aspx |
Eevee is susceptible to uti's also, because she's got hairs growing in her places that get really long and will drag on the ground and pick up bacteria. So I have to keep it trimmed. Could Yuki have something like that? |
Her vulva is exposed and that is why a few vets thinks she gets them. Her stuff is trimmed too .."too trimmed" ...she gets them too. |
well, mostly good news for Yuki. I hope she's feeling better soon. |
Good news just an uti. God Bless you Liz and Digby spirit Dog Extraordinaire xxx |

I'm pretty sure it's her allergies now. It hasn't stopped and she just finished her 2 weeks of antibiotics. It's definitely not an enjoyment of water ...it SEEMS like her food makes her itchy and uncomfortable ...and she tries to drink to compensate for the discomfort |
