Having just potty trained another puppy recently I will let you know what worked for us. 1. I made sure that for the most part the first 3 to 4 months that we kept a really consistent schedule. In the beginning it was really just a 'timing' issue so I made sure that he was fed at certain times of the day and scheduled his potty times based on his routine. 2. I chose to take him out on a leash every single time we went out for potty. That way I made sure that he was in a particular area every single time. 3. Lots and lots and lots of praise every single time! Silly happy praise as if he had just done the very best thing in the world!! 4. His signals are still very subtle but I made sure that I was trying to learn his way of letting me know he had to go. 5. At about 5 months he really began to 'get it'--if there is an accident at all now--it is totally my fault. Consistency and routine worked very well for us. |
Awesome advice sheepiezone! Good luck... Robin |
Have to say 5 months doesn't do it. I really think it takes a good solid year for the habit to really click. There will be good months and bad. You can't compare them to a human. At least with the crate - you can use puppy pads or get some really old towels from the Goodwill. Better in the crate than in the house. My best experience was when we got all wood and tile floors (well, and a new house). Our first house had all carpet - I hated it. Clean it with any product under the sun and sorry, the scent remains in that padding of the carpet and they will go again in same area, nothing works outside of new flooring. Get all wood or tile and easier to clean up, and way less scent remains if at all because you can clean it better and disinfect. Our second house, not one accident EVER. Going on 4 years now. But yes, I realize not everyone can have all tile and/or wood. |
