I'm so sorry to hear this. You've fought a good fight with Digby and now this, not fair! Lymphoma, they get weaker and weaker. He will tell you when he's ready. When he has no enjoyment in life, when it becomes too difficult to get up and around. Olivia just faded away until I saw even her sister could not perk her up. Her breathing became more rapid, either from pain or her blood just wasn't oxygenating her body. It was time. They say you can look into their eyes and they will tell you, but you'll know ahead. Dogs need to keep their dignity. |
Thank you for your response Susan. Digby does not seem to be in pain, however he has now decided that he does not want his tablets even though he is eating but rejects them in his favourite ham. He has diareah and his back leg is very shaky. He can not see at all and can only hear very slightly. Do I wait until he can not stand or shows me distress or do I take the sign that he does not want his tablets that he has had enough? His sister is with me at the moment as my parents are on holiday. Bramble is completely deaf but can see, she is smelling him and trying to make him play. or ???? xxx |
Bramble could be sniffing his illness. I'm sure there are some off notes coming from him. She is concerned and probably trying to comfort him.....especially if the action is around the face. She is keeping him connected to the world. At the far end of my concern is she attacks him because he is failing. It's a pack issue but probably not in this case. You may have to try a bit of another yummer to get the tablets down, but no more food for 24 hours. Tummy needs to settle. Water & broth, but nothing solid. Then start back with plain rice and cooked meat. Just Tablespoons at a time. If you cannot get him to take in much water, the vet would have to rehydrate him. Dehydration is a serious condition especially in an ailing dog. Could the loose bowel be part of the lymphoma......I guess. Dogs will eat almost until the end. Glacier refused breakfast and was gone 24 hours later. |
Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate your comments. Did you have to put your dog to sleep? liz xxx |
Reading this reminds me of my Pooh Bear.....especially the shaky back legs. He was diagnosed with a liver tumor and a year later a encapcilated lymphoma, that had not spread to the surrounding area. We were visiting out east for our granddaughter graduation and when we came back, Pooh had weakened quite a bit and his legs were very, very shakey. He would always sleep in our room upstairs, but could not make the extra steps even though we took him outside and avoided steps. He got to the point where he didn't get up and just laid there, but was awake and would not eat no matter what we offered. He did drink, but quit doing that too. We knew it was time...you just know it. I had my husband make the call to the vet, since I couldn't. I still cry thinking of this and am crying while typing and in 2 weeks it'll be a year. The last night I slept in the basement with him since he was starting to vomit and I did not want him to aspirate during the night. We had him only for about 5 days after we got back. You will know when it's time. He was starting to vomit dry blood and I knew we had to go. My husband and son carried him into the van and he just stared at my son, like he was memorizing his face. I never saw that look on his face. I rode the 30 mile trip in the back of the van with Pooh to the vet. It was the hardest thing I would do saying goodbye to him. I just wanted to memorize his smell and hoped it would stay with me. He was 12 at the time. I feel your pain at this time. I am so sorry for what you may be going through. |
So sorry to read of Digby's lymphoma, poor fella. He has had such a rough time. Our first OES had lymphoma too, and as Susan said, will become more and more weak. Chloe had a poor appetite at the end, and suffered with diarrhea also. As for knowing when, I didn't know either and was so frightened. One night, we felt it was time, began the drive to the hospital, and she rallied in the back seat. Through tears we drove home. The next day, I knew. She was so weak, could barely move, and her breathing was labored. It's hard to believe but you will know when. Our vet consoled us with "there is no right or wrong thing to do at this time". We took much comfort in her words. I'm sorry that you and Digby are going through this, big hugs to you |
I have no advice regarding when the right time is, but I wanted to let you know that you and Digby and in my thoughts. |
So very sorry--I do not have any advice either just wanted you to know special thoughts are with you and Digby. |
Yes, Liz, we did put Olivia to sleep. She was just dragging about, vomiting food, was not the excited puppy who came to live with us years before. We've had to help most of our pups to the bridge when their quality of life bottomed out. Glacier last summer. It is never easy....sometimes the indications are crystal clear but often you argue with yourself. At some point you have to ask, "Is my need for them to remain with me keeping them miserable? Am I being selfish?" Brenda's experience has happened to us. A sudden rally....often a car ride or something they really enjoyed. But alas the rally is short lived and their tank again. "I just wanted to memorize his smell"..........yeah, I've clipped hair. The scent stays for, ah, decades. |
Hello everyone with your very kind words. I can not see the keypad for tears. You are all so very kind and your advice is priceless. My husband is in hospital at the moment with a heart attack but should be home tomorrow. I will wait to see what Graham thinks. Digby is my second oes. Benny boo boo died of a heart attack in my dads arms which was awful but easier in many ways. Digby is still eating, in a laid down position. I love him and I love you all so much for your help and support. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Liz xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |
It's so hard to make this type of decision when you have a lot of additional stress and completely normal to second guess yourself. Trust yourself that you've given Digby a wonderful and loved life and you will know what's the right thing to do. |
Thank you xxxx |
Please make sure you take care of yourself during this time of stress and visit here often. I did keep some of Pooh's hair at his last haircut. He had one section on the back of his neck that was extra soft. The hair is sitting on top of his ashes. I opened up the bag to get a sniff of his smell, but haven't brought myself to do it lately. It is a difficult decision to let him go and when and you will second guess yourself. I think we should have taken him in a day earlier, but he had rallied a couple of days before that and was hopeful for another rally, but it didn't come. They never do leave us though and are there around us. Keep yourself open to the signs because it will be there. |
So very sorry.... Robin |
Thank you. I will keep looking into his eyes for the sign xxx |
I am so sorry you are having to go through this, Please stay with this forum we all love dogs and almost all of us have had to help our pets over the Bridge. Just be guided by your dogs quality of life. You will know when the time is right it will be so heartbreaking but you have to be brave and think of your dog. I will keep you in my thoughts.Sue xx |
I too am so sorry you are going through this and I also hope your husband feels better too. As others have said many of us have shared this journey. Digby will let you know when it is time our much loved and much missed Celyn did. Please comfort yourself with the knowledge that the love you and Digby share will be with you both for ever. Huge hugs nad much love Debs, Geoff and Cloud xxx |
Liz, Such sadness in your life. I'll be keeping you, your husband and Digby in our family prayers. You are going through such a hard time and you came to the right place to get support. Our 7 year OES was diagnosed with spinal cancer and he was peacefully and compassionately put to sleep. When the time does come, take your time in saying goodbye to Digby. Paw prints (clay impressions and ink prints) can be made and fur can be clipped. Support is here and tears are expected . |
I hope Digby is strong enough to last awhile. He may be missing your husband and surely your husband needs Digby now. |
I'm sorry you're going through this. I have not yet with one of my dogs (hopefully very far away in the future ), but I know it will be the hardest thing in my life, I only hope I can be brave enough for my girls when they need me to be. |
Our vet's office did a paw print of Pooh Bear in the shape of a heart. I just held it and cried. It's in the mahogany box with his ashes and hair clippings. I have a spot that holds his box along with a special note from my granddaughter, his collar and the Crossing the Rainbow bridge poem. Another granddaughter did a scrapbook of Pooh and gave it to us and it is sitting there, too. |
Oh so sorry to read this. Our thoughts are with you. You will know. Stay close on the forum. The people here are amazingly supportive, kind and loving. |
Thank you all. I took Digby to the vets yesterday and have arranged the plan for when it is time. The vet who has had him since a puppy has given us steroids to ensure that there is no pain, as I said although he was showing no pain, I was sure that as a human if we had cancer and it was terminal that we would be taking at least a paracetamol. He has also given us a diazapam anul tube for me to give him prior to making the final call to the vets, for them to come. I discussed with the vet what sign I should see and he said you will know liz. I feel much more confident now as a direct result of all your kind words and help. I will stay in touch on the forum . Thank you for your ongoing support Liz and Digby xxx |
Hopefully many sunny days to come yet with Digby. Your vet sounds lovely and I am sure he will be supportive when the time comes. Hugs to Digby....xxxx and Summer sends a slurpy kiss xx |
Hi Sue, I am trying to put a picture of Digby on my profile. How did you do it? liz xxxx |
looks like you have done it? yes? |
Thank you again for your help xxx |
Liz- we continue to think of you and pray for the best with Digby and your family. Knowledge and planning can reduce your own stress. Take this time now to love and hug- kiss and talk- reminisce and be joyful with all the many lovely years together. |
I hope your husband can have some time with Digy when he's able to come home. It's a very difficult decision to make and when you should make it. I hate hearing of this happening to anyone on the forum, we've all been there and it hurts so bad but there comes a time when that's the only choice. |
Thank you so much again for all your kind words you are all amazing xxxx p.s. Is there anyone on the forum who has a oes from the @ Barkyby brook tree? liz and Digby xxx |
Hi Liz just noticed you are UK. Where did Digby come from, whereabouts in UK I mean x |
Hi Sue, Digby was part of the same litter as his sister Bramble who my Mum has. They were both from Airedale near Keighley. The breeder was a gentleman called Andy and his family were Barkybrook. Digby showed successfully for many years and even went to Crufts. I will look now for his birth certificate and let you know other names in his tree. liz and Digby xxx |
Hi Sue, Digbys name is JAMACDALE ADMIRATION and his sire I think that is Dad is BARKYBROOK SKANSEN his Dam I think that is Mum is BARKYBROOK CHARITY AT JAMACDALE. Digbys bith date is 08th October 1998. His breeder was Andy and Carol Moore. I have also found some of his write ups one from Blackpool Champ show judged by Pauline Rudd said that he was '' Jodrell's (thats my maiden name) Jamacdale Admiration promising and balanced with good bone and depth for age, mature coat and moved steadily & well in difficult condidtions.'' He came first !!! Also found his tree- Barkyby Brook Charity his Mum was related to Many Barkyby Brooks a Krisina Sunday Splendour, Longdoram Sheps Folly, Krisina Lady Lightening, and many more. If you would like I could scan and paste the tree of his Mum? Liz and Digby xxx |
Hi Sue, I have scanned in but am unable to copy and paste on this forum for some reason. If you would like I could e mail you them? Liz and Digby xxx |
Hi All, Digby is still with us and much more relaxed now he is on the steroids. He is sleepy but absolutely no signs of distress . I will keep you all updated. Thank you so much for your on going support. What a lovely group of people I have found. Me thinks OES lovers are the best !!!! Liz and Digby xxxx |
Hugs to you and Digby...each day you get to enjoy together is a true gift. |
Thank you. Tunna is Digbys food of choice now with mash xxxxx |
I'm so sorry you're going though this difficult time. It's really good news that the steroids have helped to give him comfort. Wishing you and your dear boy peaceful days filled with love. |
Thank you, Digby is now laid by the back door covered with fluffy cover. Only his cute nose showing. We have spoken about meeting at the gate by the rainbow bridge xxx Much sadnes and hope xxx |
Thinking of you while you go through this difficult time. I found this forum when my Daisy was starting Chomotherapy for mammary tumours and the information, support and friendships that developed from posting really helped me get through it. We all know how strong our love is for our sheepies and will help however we can. x |

Oh My goodness!!!!!!!!! Are you saying that they have the same mother????? xxx |
Sue, What was your Summers pet name given by the breeder? Was she beginning with a B? Digby was given originally Bracken and Bramble was Bramble, all the puppys were given a name beginning with B? What was her date of birth? I wonder if they are from the same litter or just the same breeder with the same Mummy? I think Digby and Brambles mum was known as Holly. They had Havack and Hazard also, one of which was Uncle? Did you get Summer from Andy and Carol at Airedale? Liz and Digby xxx |
Hi Sue, also I think that Andy gave them their pet names by letter e.g. B was Digbys litter and after that C and I remember a litter after that was D, he had an oes from that litter called DIFA, as in D for Dog who showed. How old is Summer? Either way it looks like Digby and Summer are step brother and Sister? xxxx |
I admit i dont have a clue what Lymphoma is, but im guessing its something to do with the heart/chest. I dont know enough to help you but id like to say im so sorry and my thoughts are with you through this. Hope your oes gets better soon xx Ps: I got bloo from Retford Nottinghamshire UK. His dads from Myhaverlands xx |
Hi Samantha, Lymphoma is blood Cancer. It means that the cancer is in all their lymph nodes and blood. Marti Cain had it.The only treatment is chemo therapy, but this is usually only for younger fitter doggys. Unfortunately Digby is nearly 14 and does not fit into the criteria. Without treatment i.e. chemo, from diagnosis the prognosis is that they will live for 4 to 6 weeks. Hope this clarifys. Do you show your Dog? Liz and Digby xxx |
Aww poor digby and poor you, i can only imagine how hard it is right now. No i dont show Bloo, we do agility!:yay: |
Hi Liz. you would love Bloo he is such a rascal but with Sams help he is getting there.... its Summers grandmother I think. I cant read the pedigreeas very well I am afraid. Summer actually came from Stourbridge Near Birmingham. Her pedigree name is Daisy Proclaimer Girl. but we wanted her to be Summer.xx I must look at our last oes pedigree. We lost Katy aged 6 about 5 years ago and her and Summer had the same father. |
Who did you get Summer from? Liz and Digby xxx |
Hello All, Digby update... He is very quiet and needs help to stand on occassion. However still eating, no signs of distress and with us Liz and Digby xxx |
Summer sends a gentle slurpy kiss for Digby. She tried to give him one in the Chat room but you had left..... |
I am so sorry to hear about Digby. I am glad he is getting some comfort from the medication. We lost a Westie to nose cancer and I remember how hard those last few weeks with her were for all of us. We will keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers. Bonnie/Carley's Mom |

WHEN TOMORROW STARTS WITHOUT ME When tomorrow starts without me, and I'm not there to see; The sun will rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me. I wish so much you wouldn't cry the way you did today, Remembering how I'd lay my head In your lap that special way. I know how much you love me, As much as I love you, And each time that you think of me,I know you'll miss me too. But when tomorrow starts without me. Please try to understand, That an angel came and called my name And petted me with her hand. She said my place was ready, In Heaven far above, And that I'd have to leave behind All those I dearly love. But, as I turned to heel away, A tear fell from my eye, For all my life I never thought That I would have to die. I had so much to live for, So many sits and downs to do, It seemed almost impossible, That I was leaving you. I thought about our lives together, I know you must be sad, I thought of all the love we shared, and all the fun we had. Remember how I'd nudge your hand, And poke you with my nose? especially at the times I was supposed to stand and pose. If I could relive yesterday, Just even for awhile, I'd wag my butt and kiss you, Just so I could see you smile. But, then I fully realized, That this could never be; For emptiness and memories Will take the place of me. And when I thought of treats and toys, I might miss come tomorrow, I thought of you and when I did, My dog-heart filled with sorrow. But then I walked through Heaven's gate, And felt so much at home; As God looked down and smiled at me, From His beautiful golden throne. He said, "This is eternity, and Digby we welcome you, Today your life on earth is past, But here it starts anew. I promise no tomorrow, But today will always last; For you see, each days the same day, There's no longing for the past. Now Diggers you've been so faithful, So trusting, loyal and true; Though there were times you did things, You knew you shouldn't do. But good dogs are forgiven, And now at last you're free; So won't you sit here by my side, And wait right here with me?" So when tomorrow starts without me, Don't think we're far apart For every time you think of me, I'm right there, in your heart. |
Liz, I'm so sorry to hear about Digby. Sleep tight, Digby boy. |

Our 7 year OES was diagnosed with spinal cancer and he was peacefully and compassionately put to sleep. When the time does come, take your time in saying goodbye to Digby. Hello All, I have just returned from Digbys Funeral and Cremation at Elysium Fields, Rose Farm at Church Fenton.Digby was in a basket fluffed up and warm. He just looked as if he was asleep. I got to sy goodby again and kiss him. I left him with his family and friends photos and oes forum friends notes. The lady Victoria, placed the flowers I had brought in a cross over him. It was a lovely experience not as scary as I worried it would be. I then went into the cremation area and he was laid on a table, I was asked to check that there was nothing in the burner area and they then placed him in there. We waited for approx 1.5 hrs whilst Victoria talked to us and gave us some of Digbys hair and paw prints that she had taken. I am very glad I went and did this. It has helped me a lot. Thank you to you all. I now have Digby,s ashes at home with me as I took them with me, in a lovely blue pot with his name on. We were given a certificate and condolance card and some silk flowers . Thank you everyone. I am going to have a glass of Gin and tonic now. Liz xxxxx |
That is easily one of the saddest yet beautiful paragraphs I've ever read. Liz, thanks for posting. Going through this had to be tough, but to relive it to post... I couldn't have done it. I was barely able to read it. When we put our Bentley down, I could only hand his lead off to the vet tech and walk out. I could go any further... Funny thing, I can handle a human's death with little issue. Ask me to deal with a pet and I'm gutted. Take some time to heal and reflect. Hang out on the board for a while, it'll probably do you some good. Who knows, you may end up with another Sheepie to help fill a new void. Vance |
Vance, My angel, thank you. I will keep on with the forum as we still have my mums oes Bramble. Digby dare I say it out loud was closer to me than my own children!!! Please visit us when you can. Liz, Thank you for posting your experience. It must've been hard to be there and then post about it. That's the exact experience I would like to have when it's my boy's time. |

Where we had Pooh cremated, they did private sessions, too. We just let our vet handle it....I couldn't bear to part with him. He is in a mahogony box, and his ashes wrapped over with tissue and I'm not even sure what the ashes are contained in. I only touched the tissue and couldn't bear to see the ashes. I still have a hard time believing it's Pooh in that box. I put some of his hair and his pawprint into the box. Once again, I am very sorry for your loss. |
Thank you for your kind messages. Yes I agree Mary, it does not seem real somehow but I know he is with me and in the pot there is just his body, like his clothes. In side the pot the ashes are in a plastic bag. Its not scary now I know. Its almost like the fear of the unknown has been taken away by the reality thanks to the lovely people at Elysium who explained absolutely everything. Liz xxx |
I agree that they are always with us. I have been "visited" by Pooh Bear since he left us. The first one came a few days after. I had asked for him to send us a sign he was ok. I had been packing up his supplies to donate and a box he had gotten from his first vet visit (it held his rabies tags, licenses, etc) came off the top of the refrigerator and landed on the floor behind me, without spilling the contents. It could have not come off there since it sat flat on top of the fridge, it would have to been pushed off. Next came then sense he licked my arm one morning. I couldn't physically feel the lick, but the only way I can describe it, was I felt it into the core of me, into my soul. Next came a cloud formation that resembled him and his color pattern, and it suddenly turned and looked at me. The most recent was lying in bed at night and I felt something at the base of my feet and then I could feel the rhythm of breathing, it was so steady...there was no mistaking what it was. We just passed Pooh's one year anniversary of his death (this is his picture) and I hope his "visits" continue. They leave me such peace knowing that he is still here with us. |
Hi Mary, how beautiful and Lucky you are. The lady Victoria at the Elysium field crem told me that one of the first signs I would be given was that I would see him clearly in a cloud formation. How odd that you have had this exact sign. She also told me that the Rainbow Gate scenario was actually that they stay with you and wait until its our time to go, then they come with us. She tells me that the owner of the Elysium Crem's dog is constantly making herself known and often is seen by visitors. She is of course passed on but very much spiritually present. Also I am told that if you see bright white dots etc or shaddowy shapes this is them. I believe that I have Digby with me and hope for the lucky signs you have had. Please let me know when you have these as its an absolute joy to hear about God bless you xxx |
Oh...the cloud formation info gave me the chills!!!!! I have seen the shaddowy shape, too. I was sitting in the living room watching TV and saw in my hutch a shadow cross in front of the mirror on the back of the hutch. Couldn't explain it, but remembered it when you said that...it just floated. I also remember last summer whenever we sat outside a black butterfly was always around and was never there before his death. I'm sitting at work and trying not to cry........... |
Oh Darling you are clearly very special to Pooh Bear and he is with you, at work, at home everywhere. I bet you in times of stress you have smelt him also and just felt him following on as they do hurding you in the right direction. Please keep in touch and let me know what happens as I bet you will get a sign today now you have spoken about it Liz xxx |
Also without meaning to sound weird or odd look out for bright led blue dots, the lady at the elysium told me that often your soul pets will give you these as signs/ warnings. She has had them. She also has advised me to visit a spiritualist church and sit in the audience as often they will come through with messages, as in her words we are often closer to our pets than people and lets face it they are certainly more loyal, and this is there time to vocalise what they could only do in life with gesture . xxx |
I would love a sign soon again. I remember just after we lost him the song by Patty Loveless "How can I help you say goodbye" seem to constantly play on the radio everyday. It's from 1993 and it just played all the time. Naturally I cried everytime I heard it. Just heard it the other day and tried to explain to my husband how that song came on after Pooh left us. I couldn't even explain since I cried while talking! I will make sure you will know when I "hear" from Pooh Bear again.! |
God Bless you and Pooh Bear from Liz and Digby extraordinary spirit Doggy xxxx |
Dear Liz, I'm so sorry for your loss! Yes, he will send you a sign if you're wanting one and know to be aware. Both our Katrina and Hannah sent very clear and very special signs. Didn't help with the pain so much but was comforting nonetheless. |
Thank you so much. I appreciate your posts. Please could you add your name to Digbys book of condolance as I am hoping to add them to a book and send out to everyone Liz xxx |
Dear Liz, Just came across the news that Digby has passed on. The experience that you provided for him sounds like what you and he needed. So glad that you both received wonderful, compassionate care. Thinking of you and wishing you a bright tomorrow filled with continued, lovely memories. |
