Puppy Food Opinions

Hello everyone. This is my first question here but I have been reading all your posts for months and months. I finally picked up my baby boy the other day, Dylan, a 9 week OES. The breeder is absolutely wonderful and experienced in owning, breeding & showing OES's for many years. She fed him Merrick BG dry food mixed with water until soft. I have been following her recommendation, just adding about 2 heaping tablespoons of Merrick canned puppy food to it. He devours the food and has had no diarrhea issues since coming home. Now yesterday, I took him to my vet just to get checked out and thankfully, he said Dylan looks extremely healthy and gorgeous :). The only thing he recommended was switching to a large breed puppy food. He said that studies show limiting his calcium intake will slow down his bone growth and help deter large breed problems like hip dysplasia later on. I was thinking of slowly changing his food to Orijen large breed puppy food but curious to see what thoughts you experienced OES owners had on this.

Thanks!!! :ghug:

Congratulations on your new puppy! Post pictures of him, we all love puppy pictures here!

We feed our puppy Fromm's Gold Large Breed Puppy, and it's been good so far! It's very well formulated. This is what I was told by PWcorgi when I was asking about dog foods:
"Protein is not the biggie for large breed puppies, it is calcium to phosphorus ratio. You can have a low protein food and still have a calcium/phos ratio that is too high for large breed puppies! Unfortunately most bags are not going to have calcium/phos numbers on their bags, so unless you call them you aren't going to know what their exact numbers are. I have personally spoken with the Fromm nutritionist (one more thing I love about their company, he gave us his personal cell number in case he wasn't in the office and a customer had an urgent question!) on several occasions, though never regarding this question in particular, and have every confidence that he has all of this formulated correctly. He REALLY knows his stuff, even in comparison to other company nutritionists that I've spoken to. "
So I have quite a bit of faith in the Fromm's food, as do others.
You can read that whole thread here if you want, it might help you. I was looking into switching foods not long ago myself!

I don't have any personal experience with the Orijen, but I remember reading another discussion about it, here:

The Orijen food is super high protein, which sometimes causes some issues. It does have a limited amount of calcium/phosphorus. I'm sure some others who feed Orijen will tell you about their experiences with it.
We also love Blue Buffalo (especially the grain free) for our aussie, Bailey. She does very well on it, and she really likes the food.

Whichever food you choose to go with, I hope he likes it!
Hi Nicole and welcome!! I believe everyone lurks and reads before they actually post..I know I did!!

Dylan is a great name for your fella. And as you know, we love those pictures, so I'll just say it now and get it out of the way

When Charm was first home, her breeder and our vet recommended a large breed puppy kibble for her. So my first thought would be to check with your breeder. If they are as experienced as you believe, I would definitely get their thoughts. Then, you will have to decide what is best. Maybe searching past threads here would help too. I know many of the experienced members will give you some great advice too.

Again, welcome to you and Dylan!
Thanks for the responses Jade & Brenda!!! I really appreciate your feedback. Looks like we are going to slowly switch over to Fromm's. I will post his pictures once I figure out how....lol

Thanks again!!!
Welcome and congratulations on your new puppy. I love his name!

I continued feeding what my breeder recommended and we had no tummy problems at all.
We switched to IAMS which Kenny didn't really eat so we switched to FROMM GOLD which he has always loved and is much better quality. We tried various samples as Treats until we found one he seemed to like the most
Welcome! Ramsey is 5 months old and I currently feed him and my other almost 3 year old doggie Fromm. It's awesome. Orijen, while fantastic food, was just too rich for the lil guy. He had tummy problems, soft and frequent stools while he was on it.

Before that I fed my older one Blue Buffalo, never had any issues with that either, I only switched her because she was getting bored with it, lol.
