"Reputable", breeder is NOT.

We have had a terrible experience with a very experienced breeder, which I would like to share. I would also like to share the breeder's name. No one should be getting puppies from this breeder!! When you hear the story, you will understand why. I would love to put the breeder's name out there, but not sure if that's a good idea. Any suggestions?

If they're a member of the breed club, have you contacted the breed club to register a former complaint?
It looks like you may be in Canada... maybe also check with the kennel clubs, both USA and Canada.
No, we've only found out today that he won't be honouring our agreement. That is a good idea, thanks, I will do that!
Chris,
Going to a "list" of approved breeders really won't get you anywhere. You have to be your own advocate and ask the hard questions of ANY breeder you are considering.

Review the following 2 links to get you started in the right direction.

Agreement? If its written, I'd be calling a lawyer as well.

If it's the AKC in the USA, it doesn't look like they can be of any help.

If you feel that you should be compensated for all or part of the purchase price of your dog, and if you are unable to resolve the matter with the seller; we can only recommend that you seek legal counsel to determine if you can obtain relief through civil channels. You may also wish to bring this matter to the attention of your local Better Business Bureau or Consumer Protection Service.
Chris,
Here is another great resourse that our own Jaci (6Girls) put together.

We can't go through a lawyer as we have to sue within the city that the breeder resides. We are thousands of miles from there. At this point we don't expect to be compensated, we just don't want anyone else to buy their dog from this breeder. Believe me, I am a teacher and I do my homework. Here is my advice if you are wanting an OES pup: (much of it is identical to the advice others gave)

1. If you can't get to the kennel, don't bother. Pictures don't tell the "tail". :) Looking back, we should have settled on another breed, as much as we had our hearts set on an OES. Once that puppy is in your living room and your kids are playing with it, you aren't going to return it, trust me. Especially if you have to travel to a bigger city to do it. You won't want to put the puppy through it either. I know some breeders ship but it is a real crapshoot for the purchaser. And it's a lot of money and time to wager.

2. Someone told us that if a breeder has a bunch of puppies available, that's a real red flag. We were so heartbroken over the loss of our last dog, we didn't pay attention to little issues, like emails not being returned promptly, or information given freely about the parents. It was too much work to find out anything about the puppies. Listen to your inner voice! Don't allow the breeder to make excuses about their poor communication.

3. Be patient! Wait for a good breeder even if it's not as convenient. You will have this family member around for a long time.

4. Get everything in writing. The breeder we used wanted to do everything over the phone but we insisted on email. At least we have a record of the agreements we made.

5. If there seems to be a problem at the beginning, get to a vet right away. That way you have a written record of the issues you are dealing with from a professional.
I have replied to Chris and am more than happy to help him in any way that I can. Unfortunately this breeder is not a member of the OESOCC so I am unable to help him bring a complaint against the breeder with the breed Club.

We are all here to support you. :ghug:
Thanks for trying to help, Amber.

Really good advice, Chris. Unfortunately they're things some of us had to learn first hand.
I'm really sorry this reimbursement didn't go as promised. Is you're puppy is doing well?
