Update on Gigi

It is with a heavy heart that I write this.  We have come to a gut wrenching decision to rehome my best friend, my girlie girl, my buddy, my love, my bling shopping gal and a wonderful therapy dog. As most of you have read, Gigi has what I have been told is " high prey instinct" and cannot be trusted around small dogs. See thread in behavior section.

After much research, attempts to make it work,  and tears, this is the right thing to do for all of us..  So why does it hurt so much!  She has been with me for 3 1/2 years from the age of eight weeks old.

Gigi and I have been through a lot together.  I helped her recovery from her bilateral OCD shoulder surgery.  She helped me recovery from broken feet, surgeries and losses of friends and family members.  Instinctually knowing when to lick me or just show me her one blue eye and cuddle with me.

While she has this problem and cannot live with my little shih tzus, she is still a wonderful girl.  There is a natural talent in her for therapy. Due to family members illness and injuries, we have been in rehabs and hospices. Gigi has visited numerous times and just knows what to do. She places her head on the laps of persons in wheelchairs and just does the right thing.  I have not trained her. The rehabs and hospice have asked me to continue bringing her in for visits.   One day in petco with Gigi, a woman in a wheelchair came up to us and asked if she could pet Gigi, of course I said yes. Gigi was young at this time. She did so well. Then a young girl who had a bit of a challenge mentally came up and began giving Gigi commands.  Gigi did them all.  Some of which she did not know!

She also loves obedience classes, agility, walking around town, going out to lunch and must be told she is pretty.  Being a very smart gal, she needs to be busy but not get dirty.  She knows many commands and listens well.  Well not when she sees a squirrel, must give chase.  Oh when an animal, any animal, real or cartoon, is on tv, she must bark at it.  This has improved lately.

She is a sweet dog most of the time.  When she is hungry, she herds me to her bowl.  At times she is demanding.  Mr Bogey, my other sheepie, mellow man, is herded and bossed around but he is ok with it.  He just says whatever.

I apologize for the lengthy post, but she deserves it.  Whoever adopts her, gains so much.  I lose more than I can describe.

I'm so sorry that you can't keep her :( I hope she gets to go to a wonderful home!

Carol,
I am so sorry to hear that you must rehome her.
Hopefully it will be somewhere nearby so maybe you can visit occasionally.

Will you be leaning on a rescue to help you rehome her?

Here's a pic I found of her from Sheepiepalooza 2011:

So very sorry that you are going through this. Ugh. :(

Oh Carol--I am so so very sorry you have had to make this decision. Right now your heart must be breaking. It is clear that you have given much effort to try to find a different solution.

Special thoughts for you and Ron as you go through this process and I hope that Gigi finds a wonderful home. :ghug:
Here is one of my favorite photos of Gigi. This was last year at sheepiepolooza

I have been in contact with a rescue. She needs to go to a wonderful home!
It is so difficult looking at my girl and knowing that she will not be here forever.
Carol, I'm sorry you are hurting. You're doing the right thing but that doesn't mean it is easy. I know you will find the perfect home for Gigi.
carol

She is a beautiful girl and you took such great care of her. I know this was not easy for you Maybe her new home will stay in touch with you Hugs to you at this very sad time............

She sounds like a wonderful girl... one that will adapt to new lifestyle changes well because of
all you've done with her. I'm just so very sorry that this change will leave you hurting, Carol. :(
I sent you a pm yesterday but I will add some thoughts here. I will always treasure the day we spent in St. Charles, with Mady and Gigi looking gorgeous and Bogey being the gentleman he always is. Gigi brought many smiles to people and she will continue to do so. I know that you will be hurting and missing her but keep remembering that Gigi will continue to have a joyful life, as she did with you, in her new home. You have been great parents to her and have set her up well to make another family happy. Your friends in rescue will make sure that they find just the right place for Gigi to continue to thrive. :ghug:
Well, that just sucks! I'm so sorry you're going thru this, but I so admire you for doing what is right for everyone in the long run, no matter how much it hurts you. The shih-tzus will once again be safe and allowed free roam of the house. And Gigi will thrive in a new home, no worries. All the rescues I've ever worked with are amazing, and I'm sure Gigi will go to a good home who will love her as much as you do. Many hugs to help you get thru this!

So sorry, I know that no words can even help you through this difficult time, but what a beautiful dog she is, and your post about all her amazing qualities, she is going to make someone very happy!
Carol, I am so sorry you and Ron had to make this very tough decision. I'm sure it is just breaking your heart. I've met Gigi and whoever adopts her will be very lucky. :ghug:
I am so sorry you had to make this tough decision. I cannot imagine how you are feeling. She will be a wonderful addition to a "good" home. I hope it is somwhere closr so that you will still be able to see her.

Carol, I'm so sorry that you are hurting. No doubt it was an incredibly difficult decision for you and your family. May Gigi find the perfect home for her special talents.

What an awful decision to have to make! But you have absolutely made the best decision for your whole family, including Gigi.

:ghug:
What a heartwrenching decision. I can't imagine what you are going through. I hope that you and rescue can find a wonderful home for Gigi. You are doing what is best for your home, all of your fur-babies and your best friend.

:ghug:
Thanks for all you kindness, support and hugs. It is very difficult and I am sick over this. At times, I feel as if I failed her. She is sitting with me now as I write this. My tears stream. She is my girl in a house of boys. She will be missed tremendously. Let's all pray she gets a worthy home. I must make sure of that.
Such a heart wrenching decision.
:ghug: :ghug:
All I can say is :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: to you all.
Carol, my heart goes out to you in the struggle to make this tough decision. :hearts: Gigi was such a sweetheart at Sheepiepalooza and running with the "big dogs" was her thing. Sometimes a situation doesn't work out as we hope. Hey, some little dogs annoy me so who can blame her for disliking one?

Although it's often hard to imagine, re-homed dogs do just fine. Rescues are very careful in the placement of dogs entrusted to them and will often keep the original owners informed of their progress and updated with photos and antics if they so desire.

Feel free to vent here on the forum. Nobody ever wants to let their dog go under any circumstances. As it is, Gigi will find a great home and allow another family to experience the same kind of love you'd had with her during your life together. It's heartbreaking to those who give them up but as far as a dog going to a new home, they think of it as being off on a new adventure. And, they become a beloved family member with them just as with your family. She will never forget you but she'll be just fine in a new home.

Think positive thoughts!
