Meet Nadine Nadine was taken in as a stray at the West Valley shelter outside of Salt Lake City. She is approximately 4 years old. As you can see in the photo, she was in bad shape. We managed to pull her from the shelter before her hold time. The young lady that works there, Tess, was key to getting this girl out and to medical attention. Once she arrived at the vet they knew she would have to be sedated for the work that needed to be done. Her coat was dread locks and pelt full of foxtails that had been doing their insidious work and bur roughing into the skin. Doc said he remove about 50 of the nasty weeds. She had the usual matting at the bum with feces and maggots. Luckily, no open sores in the area, the maggots were evicted with the shave down. She had a couple goat head thorns in her paws that were causing abscess which the Doc made quick work of. While there he cut down toe nails that had already started to curl over and back. He had assumed she had been tethered somewhere in the weeds and left and our suspicion was confirmed when the Doc said she had a garrote injury 1/2-3/4 inch around her neck. That injury will take a little attention from the temp foster to keep dry as Nadine is about 20 lbs over weight and has a little roll of fat that covers the injury. But on the good news side, Doc just called and said Ms. Nadine is up and around, although walking a bit gingerly, and will be ready to go home with her foster this afternoon. She will stay in SLC for one week, long enough to rest and recoup and then she will go to Bette in Co Springs. We are still looking for help getting her transported from South Jordan UT to Colorado Springs CO next week. If anyone has an idea, please get in touch. As always, Bette runs CO OES rescue on a shoe string, so donations for Nadine are gladly accepted. Mine is already on the way. Anyone in the Salt Lake City area, the West Valley City Shelter could REALLY use donations of Blankets and Food. Tess was so wonderful in getting Nadine out and to the medical care she needed, I want to help them where I can. Every shelter should have a Tess. Our friend that sprung Nadine from the shelter said she has a heart of gold, knows a couple commands, and rode very well in the car. I'm sure all of my wonderful friends that I called on to help with this girl in SLC are thinking, why don't they just stay moved to Texas! Feel free to cross post! |

Nadine aftet the Vet, ready to find a furever home. Now that I can see her face, I know she is a "Payson" pup. Many of our fosters have come from this backyard, irresponsible breeder. They are large dogs with a wonderful personality. Feel free to cross post. |
Devra, Thanks for posting the "after" pic. I was wondering what she looked like all cleaned up. Looks like she has soulful eyes. Hope she finds a great home soon. |
Will she be available for adoption at some point? We may be interested.... especially if she's good with other dogs and animals. |
Nadine's foster mom says she has done very well with her dogs so far. We will see more as the week goes on. I have fostered babies from this breeder and all of them were sweet and loving. Yes, she is up for adoption through Colorado OES rescue. |
This poor pup. I just shed some tears looking at the before picture and reading her story. How can people be so cruel and horrible? She is so lucky to have been saved and she must feel a million times better now that she has been shaved and has vet care. I know she will find a wonderful home and she will be a fantastic pup for a family!! |
Photos from Ms. Nadines foster mom. You can see Nadine is in need of diet and excercise. Foxtail removal from her paws Neck wound This poor girl is already following her foster mom like an overweight shadow. This is the first Sheepie experience for the Foster mom. |
Good luck Nadine, I hope you find your furever home soon |
so glad she is safe and in a good foster home. These stories just leave a big lump in my throat. |
First night report from the foster mom, this girl is a diamond. She loved the bed she was given in the living room so much foster mom decided not to crate her at bed time. Nadine slep the entire night on the bed without a peep. Although still in pain, her playfully side is blossoming. Foster mom confirmed, she is potty trained and knows several commands. We really need to find transportation from SLC to either Grand Junction, Denver, or CO Springs next weekend. |
What a wonderful rescue story.Nadine has been set free from her torture and pain..WOOHOO! Warms my heart to see the after pictures. The glowing reports thus far from her foster Mom sound like Nadine will make someone a very happy camper! Looking forward to hearing more about this sweet girl! I started thinking and I wonder why, some rescue's run on a shoestring budget? Hugs to all, who helped Nadine, Robin |
The sun is shining now on Nadine. Her poor neck. Blessed are the people who have rescued and cared for her! |
Bless her heart. Sometimes I just don't care for the human race but then look at this beauty now. I will go to website and make a donation Have they tried pilot and paws?? I have had many a dog flown but it was an emergency of sorts and you are supposed to have exhausted all means of ground transport......give the website a look |
gumbo41 wrote: I started thinking and I wonder why, some rescue's run on a shoestring budget? Robin Running on a shoestring is certainly not by choice. Colorado OES rescue would not exist if it weren't for the dedicated efforts of Bette Green. The rescue covers a vast territory with little population. That makes transport more challenging and a much smaller pool of volunteers to draw from. They do not have a trust fund or a large established network of "alums" that donate regularly as some rescues. Rarely does the $300 adoption fee cover the costs incurred from medical care, etc. The small group of very dedicated volunteers work extremely hard on any means to raise funds, but as soon as money comes in, a dog with huge issues arrive on the door step. At this point the rescue has 8 dogs somewhere in the process. One just received a new hip, which took more than the proceeds gathered from a impromptu fund raiser. Another dog is waiting his turn for a new hip. Don't have the funds for that yet. Ms. Nadine is racking up vet bills as we speak. She has already been through one surgery and returned for more removal of foxtails as an office visit. The vet needs to sedate her again on Thursday for deeper seated foxtails. Even with a deal from the vet, she's going to cost $1,000 (hopefully that's all). She has a home waiting, but she has to be healthy to go. So, that's why CO OES rescue runs on a shoestring, the need is far greater than the support. |
Bless everyone involved in the rescue of dear, dear Nadine. I hope she gets to live the rest of her life in comfort and surrounded by love. Linda Zimmerman & Hudson, Chloe & Kristy |
Thanks for reminding me Devra, I try to send a little donation when I have some extra $$. Bette, Joe and the gang are indeed very hard working and have had some medical cases lately. |
I just made a small donation to Colorado OES Rescue to help with Nadine's vet expenses. I usually support other OES Rescue organizations (and still will) but Nadine's story touched me. http://oesrescueofcolorado.org/donate.html and Is the the West Valley Shelter Nadine came from? West Valley Animal Shelter 4522 West 3500 South, West Valley City, UT (801) 965-5800 · wvc-ut.gov Linda Zimmerman & Hudson, Chloe & Kristy |
Thanks Susan. I know you have been so gracious with donations in the past. Linda, thank you! Yes, Nadine came from the west valley shelter. If it weren't for the tech at the shelter Nadine would have suffered greatly. |
Ms. Nadine is still a medical event. I knew Foxtails were bad, but working with Nadine has really opened my eyes. She had another visit to the vet to open some of the wounds on her feet to remove more Foxtails. The Dr cannot believe what this girl has gone through and the pain she is enduring with a smile. She is scheduled for another round of foxtail removal under sedation on Thursday. On the bright side, her neck wound is healing nicely. I can't wait for this girl to be well. She is going to make a wonderful companion to a lucky person. Even in pain she is trying to play with her foster sister. She is also enjoying a good walk with the 3 resident ducks. |
I am so glad she has people who care enough to take care of her after all she has been through. I didn't realize foxtails were so bad either. Trying to play with her foster sister shows you just what a big heart these Sheepies have. I only wish people were that nice. I will send a donation to them also. Thank you so much for helping these wonderful dogs. Bonnie/Carley's Mom |
Debra. How wondeful of you tobhelp this gril. Thanks! |
She is a very special girl. Someone will be SO fortunate to make her part of their family. |
Thank you for taking good care of Nadine. Her story makes me cry. I just don't understand how people can treat animals that way...if you don't want to take care of her, put her into rescue. There are people willing to home them. I wish I could do this, but I just don't have the room where we live. |
This post fills my heart. Thank you all for supporting Bette & co. I know first hand what dedicated people they are. I adopted my Mo from the Colorado OES rescue earlier this year. He also had numerous medical issues that they diligently and thoroughly addressed before the adoption. Now he is stable with some chronic issues, but I cannot imagine my world without him. I know Nadine wll rescue some family out there, just as Mo did us.... who rescued who? Salla. |
Foxtails..ggrrrrr. Poor girl, another trip to emergency. More of that nasty grass working its way out. This time it burst through a spot on her neck that had been sutured from the garrote injury. Another bump is building further down the neck. Foster mom is doing a great job keeping up with this |
The doctors continue to be amazed with Ms. Nadine's recovery. Still has several abscesses from the grass coming out, but the doctors aren't worried as they have already deemed her a miracle. Her foster mom has been key to how well this has turned out. Now, the good news, Nadine has a home! No transport involved, she will stay put with her foster mom. don't you just love a happy ending. |
Awesome.....and a miracle baby at that! I would say, you cannot get any better than this. So happy for Nadine! |
wow such great news |
That is great - and I am hoping for her continued healing and recovery!! |
Yay for Nadine! Happy to hear that news! |
