http://www.stanleycoren.com/e_lovedogs.htm While I was reading that I remembered seeing Jimmy recite a poem he had written about his dog Beau on the Johnny Carson show. Lo and behold the clip is available on youtube, actually submitted by Carson's estate, I assume. I don't mind saying I was bawling by the end. I can't begin to imagine a guest of Jimmy Stewart's caliber doing something like this on any of the current irreverent (disrespectful?) nighttime shows. Can you? |

I don't care for any of the night shows these days. They're all so disrespectful and unpleasant and I just don't care for what they have to say, I don't think they're funny at all. I like to watch Ellen in the daytime instead, she's usually doing nice things and she's funny and sometimes has more serious things on her show too. I could see something like this being on Ellen instead of it being on during the night these days. That is a lovely poem, and a great story though it is sad. |
Fortunately youtube is blocked at work or I'd be sobbing now, just from your description, Ron. Johnny was classy. Not crude, not mean, but truly funny and serious when needed. |
I posted that a long time back and have heard it a million times and still get choked up every time I see it or hear it. Thanks for posting again Ron. I needed my tear duct flushed anyway. Vance |
I probably remembered seeing it from your post! I found reading the additional "Jimmy Stewart was a huge dog lover" stuff at Stanley Coren's site nice additional background. |
We really need an easy thumbs up feature |
My hubby and I watched a show Sunday night about Johnny Carson. There will never be another, like him. He definitely was the great one. After the news, I immediately switch to HGTV. Enjoy Ellen, as well. Thank you, Ron for sharing....very touching. Robin |
I remember watching Jimmy Stewart read this poem on Carson.........the whole audience was in tears, me too. I've watched the vid a few times, but just thinking about it now chokes me up. I'm afraid Harry and I are developing such a relationship. He was standoffish with the Pyrs around, but when they left, he moved right in--pushing aside the sheepdogs. He wakes me in the a.m. if I'm sleeping in the wrong bed then stands in the doorway, "Come on, let's go to the lower bed so I can snuggle." Then we race for the best spot on the bed and start the morning with a nap together. |
That one makes me cry every time! |
