Uh... what is it? |
It is a soccer tournament. Each game will be watched by more people than watch the Superbowl. Soccer isn't as popular yet in the U.S. In Canada, more kids play soccer than play hockey now, so it has gained ground over the years. I started watching as a teenager because the guys had great legs and cute bums, but now really love the game itself. |
Virginia won't be watching, she'll be snuggled up in her silk pillows fast asleep |
Little Lizzy wrote: Virginia won't be watching, she'll be snuggled up in her silk pillows fast asleep She sleeps in our bed now, it is ridiculous how this lady has taken over all of the most comfortable spots. I now sleep on a six inch sliver of the edge of the bed and you know that I am not a six inch sliver of a woman! |
An amusing little piece about soccer and Americans. Funny thing is that you guys down there have some phenomenal players, really talented and exciting to watch, but so many of them have to go to Europe to play at a high level. We just need you guys to win the World Cup once, then you will be hooked! http://www.theonion.com/articles/report-people-talking-about-soccer-but-theres-no-w,28400/ |
Hmm, don't know how to embed a url. http://www.theonion.com/articles/report-people-talking-about-soccer-but-theres-no-w,28400/ |
Yay, I did it!! |
Soccer is cool But no, I probably won't be watching. We don't watch sports very often. And by not very often, I mean never |
ME ME ME. I will be watching. First game Today. England vs France Monday. I thought Kim & David support Liverpool |
Come on Jade its not soccer its football. Problem with the Euro's are going to be the Nazi supporters as the English started this issue in the 70's & all the other thugs around the world have copied them & its not very good in eastern Europe. It should not been held there |

Parwaz wrote: ME ME ME. I will be watching. First game Today. England vs France Monday. I thought Kim & David support Liverpool Aside from Ireland whom I always have a soft spot for (but have no chance), I don't tend to have a hat in these international football matches (well, for World Cup, I always cheer for the African teams at the start, it'd be awesome for one to win the WC, what can I say? I tend to back the underdogs). So for international football, I tend to watch the games, and start cheering for the teams which show the best sportsmanship and are the most entertaining. So of course, that means I've never cheered for Italy. Kim is the same way I think, very different for us Canadians when watching these type of tournaments compared to let's say, Brazilians, or Spaniards, Germans or English etc. In 2004, early on in the tournament I was really impressed by both Greece and Portugal, and was cheering for both in the first round, so it was really exciting to see them both end up in the final. |
It's not worth watching since Lionel Messi (of Argentina) won't be playing, although I might watch Spain with Iker Cassias for few games....so easy on the eyes! |

Dutch could go out but most games have been good |

True enough, but for me, being Canadian, my team never gets to the world stage to play against Messi. We tied Honduras in qualifying yesterday. Sigh. |
Kim...I feel your pain, the US tied Guatmala in qualifing yesterday. We are big football fans (I played from age five until I was 30, and my daughter has played club ball for the last five years), and we are watching most of the Euro 2012 games. I did enjoy watching Portugal play today......Ronaldo is so easy on the eyes And of course I also love to watch Messi play, such skill...amazing. Our next sheepie will be named "Our Little Magician" call name Messi...we've also considered Rooney.......but I think Messi is better. |

They loved playing with her, she is a decent fullback. Until she punctured their ball, that is. I wish I could find some kind of ball, similar in size and weight, to a soccer ball. Mady and I could have fun with that! |
kim, i used to get beatup ones from soccer coach, then deflate them just a bit so they were easier for the dogs to grab. lasted quite awhile that way, even with tug-o-war games. |
England won beat the sweeds 3-2 . Bring the next lot on |
So where can I watch it here in America? |
I think you can watch all the games on BBC on this link? http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/ We were at a gig in a pub last night and we managed to crash the pubs internet connection as we were all tring to watch the match before the band started! |
I've found it on ESPN here, actually. My internet is out at the moment, again (at&t is awful for internet), so I'm glad its on tv. I can get online from my phone but it'd be hard to watch the game on it. We're watching the Greece/Russia game now and hoping Greece will win! |
Been watching as much as i can. It's been a great tourney....even though i think he is a diver and baby, Cristiano Ronaldo is definitely one of the world's best and is so much fun to watch. I actually went to a Real Madrid game when i was in Madrid in January and he's even crazier to see in person. Would love to see Messi though....he's the world's best. |

I get so furious when a player of his caliber is a diver and a baby (and I agree with your assessment, he is a baby). He doesn't need to be, though, he is so skilled he should just play an honest game and let his skill speak for itself. I have not enjoyed him this tournament. He seems to only take joy in goals if HE scored them. It is a team sport, after all. That is what always takes the Dutch out, too. So much talent, not enough team work. I ranted a bit about Ronaldo this past week. I used to think it was just his age and immaturity, but he is a grown up now, time to suck it up and play. I wonder, do the players that dive not realize that we can watch them in slow motion? Having played soccer for years, in my young and fit days, I know how much it hurts to get studs in the ankle, but so often I watch the replay and there was no contact at all!! I get that Ronaldo is trying to draw the foul, but I think that diving cheapens the game and it certainly makes me lose respect for the players that do it. Now that my rant is over, on a lighter note, watch the following very short commercial from Euro 2004. It still makes me giggle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcCw9RHI5mc |
Do you watch the final yesterday? I was cheering for Italy but... we lost 4-0 It was a good game |
Spain was outstanding that game. I was rooting more for Spain because i follow La Liga and got the chance to see Real Madrid in Madrid when i was there. It was outstanding. That said, I'm not a huge spain fan by any means...hoping they were going to win but in a better game. |
