Multiple Pups

I don't want to seem greedy, but anyone with thoughts on getting 2 puppies at once? We have been sheepie-less for just about a year now, and it seems lately that we have been seeing dogs in pairs lately, from the rest stop on the Mass Pike, coming home from college, to the bank drive through here in NJ this week. Tell me, am I in for double trouble getting 2 pups at once or a factor of 10? Anyone else have similar experience?

OH MYYYYYYYYYYYYY!! I hope you are young and energetic!!! It does sound like fun though! :D
Personally, I would not be up for puppy times 2!! On the other hand, it would be soo cute, but it also equals 2 of everything all at once. I'm sure there are people out there who have had success with 2 puppies, but I imagine it requires a lot more energy on the owner's part. Our breeder won't sell 2 puppies at the same time to one family.
My husband tells me that when we're in the market for our next dog, we'll get two, but not two puppies. One puppy (mainly because we've never done the puppy thing, only rescues), and one rescue a little older. I know Willowsprite got her two girls as puppies, but they're a few months apart. She'd probably be the best one to respond from experience.
Chris
I have 4 OES and got them 2 at a time, mainly because we couldn't decide on just one. Other than larger vet bills it hasn't been a problem. It was fun watching them interact, they are all so different and special in their own way. We have never had any fights to speak of, just little skirmishes now and then. The 2 older ones pretty much trained the younger ones.

Holly, do your dogs get jealous of the attention that you give to each one individually? Clyde will not let me pet Lucy for longer than about 5 seconds. It's not in a mean way but he'll shove himself in between Lucy and I so I can't touch her anymore. Or, which Lucy and I both love, he'll just bark in Lucy's face until she gets so fed up, she walks away from me. Then Clyde happily lies down in her place. James says he just a huge mama's boy...which he is.
Mine aren't the same age, but they are only 6 months apart in age, and I do find my younger dog pushes Dancer out of the way for attention. I don't find it more difficult having two, once you get into a routine etc....
They certainly all love attention. They all do the flip your arm thing if they feel left out. The one thing that suprises me is that they seem to know Beau needs more attention than they do and accept it. As Luke gets older he's more affectionate, when he was a puppy he didn't really like being petted. When Rosco thinks it's his turn he jumps in your lap to torture you. Daisy barks in your face so you don't forget her  Beau is always a gentleman and loves to lay next to your chair, happy just to have your hand on him.
I think if you have complete cooperation from hubby...share in the walking each taking one...then it will be okay.

2 are much harder to watch for housebreaking, they will also be extremely bonded to each other and perhaps less to you. They will need to be treated as individuals...kennel one at a time for training, and learning their names.

My aunt and uncle bought 2 Keeshonds female littermates...they were hard to train, but eventually knew their own names. Also for grooming they couldn't keep up, and ended up shaving them down. One has now since passed away and the other is adjusting to the new 1 yr old puppy as her companion, she is about 12 yrs now.
I used to think they would be more bonded to each other than to me too, but I don't believe that is the case with oes in particular since they are so family oriented..... my two dogs are very bonded to each other, but also very bonded to me.
Hmm.

Well, our Shayleigh gave birth to nine beautiful pups this past St Patrick's Day. We had originally planned to keep one but our daughter fell in love with a second pup and we have kept both. As of this writing the pups are one day over twelve weeks old.

Observations:

First, there is a bit of a group dynamic. When one puppy needs to go to the bathroom they both do. This seemed true even when we had all nine with us. If you can get them outside regularly they seem to have fewer inside accidents than just a single puppy.

Second, walking them is a real joy. We bought a coupler leash from the pet store and they are training to walk side-by-side. So far, they do so wonderfully and seem to encourage each other to keep moving and not read the 'Doggie Daily' quite so much.

Third, they keep each other company. They play nice together and don't have to have a human entertaining them all the time. Also, with another puppy there the inclination to experiment with things about the house is somewhat less.

Fourth, having two pups seems easier on their mother. Shayleigh isn't being bothered by a pup all the time.

We had a family buy two pups from us and we quizzed them extensively about having two at once. They had done this before and found it to be an ideal way to socialize the new pups. So far in our own experience, I have to agree.

Naturally, there is the added expense of having a second pup. If you can handle that aspect of it then I'd say go for it.
John I was thinking about Shayleigh's puppies today and wondering how things were going for you. Have they all gone to their new homes? (except the two you kept) Do you have any new pictures? I have to say, that's pretty great that you only kept two!! They sure were adorable babies! I enjoyed the posts detailing the experience.
