Advice would be so so appreciated. |

Patience, puppies do this. yes, the bug juice could have been the trigger, she's a lot closer to the chemicals than you. Plain excitement can cause this as well....and heat....and worming.....and Heartgard.....and and and. The tummy and gut are upset. Time to heal. Stop feeding for 24 hours.....or as long as you can manage. Plenty of water to replace that which is shooting out the other end. Start her back on a bland diet.......rice with ground meat cooked in it. I do it together (as away to keep DH out of it, but that no longer work). Start off with 1/4 cup fed 3x a day. No cookies, etc. When things firm up, gradually reduce rice and start adding kibble. You might try slipper elm bark, available at heath food stores. It coats the intestines like a balm. |

Does it matter what kind of rice? And is ground beef okay? |
A pro-biotic and/or a bit of plain yogurt may help with gut healing. Hope she gets back to normal soon |
Any rice........gummy rice is fine and maybe better for them to eat. I use whatever meat I have on hand: ground beef, turkey.....or I whiz something in the food processor; pork or lamb, chicken. Probiotic is great too. If pup can tolerate kefir or yogurt , try a teaspoon of that as well. I cured Jack of the major runs over New Years with kefir and milk thistle. |
You're not alone. Ava started poopy nastiness last night on us. Just got back from the vet, she got flagyl and probiotics. We are doing broth all day, chicken and rice tonight. She even barfed once. Sigh. Hope Evee gets to feeling better soon! |

We're not going to take her over to Jacob's parents anymore because I'm pretty sure their bug chemicals had something to do with it, since there haven't been any other recent changes. |

This is no fun, especially with white carpets. |
If you cook ground beef for her, make sure to rinse it after cooking, before you give it to her, to get rid of the excess fat. Too much fat can cause pancreatitis, which, trust me, you want to avoid at all costs. Hope she is feeling better soon. Laurie and Oscar |
Great advice about witholding food for 24 hrs. and a bland diet. When I feed a bland diet, I microwave a huge bowl of instant rice in the microwave and boil the meat in a pan on the stove. All the grease goes out with the water, then I mix the meat (I usually use ground beef) with the rice and store in the frig. Found this an easy, quick way to prepare a bland diet. This should fix her up in no time. Gotta love sheepies' sensitive digestion! Hope she feels better soon, |
So far, she hasn't pooped since this morning. We did broth and water all day, but I could tell she was starving. This evening, I made a ton of chicken and rice (thank you Sam's Club). So far, so good on a little of that. How's Eevee? Any better? |

She hasn't pooped since around ten this morning, so I think everything must be out of her tummy. We let her have water and that's all. I'm going to cook her up some beef and rice in the morning, and see how it goes from there. I'm glad Ava is doing better, hopefully she keeps getting better and not any worse! |
puppies, puppies, puppies.......sigh. Before I knew better I'd dose them with Pepto.......then wash the cursed pink stuff off them, me and everything else within 10 feet. |
Well, this is what I get for listening to Jacob. After keeping her off food for 24 hours, I was going to give her beef & rice like you guys suggested, but Jacob talked me into just trying to feed her the regular dog food. Well, that didn't work too great, this morning she pooped half diarrhea and half solid. Which is a little improvement, at least. Then a few hours ago I gave her like a snack sized portion of food, and she just now threw it up. Looks like we're going to most definitely try the beef and rice now!! |
Did she recently have a set of vaccinations? Sometimes that upsets the tummy. If so, mention it to the vet next time. Any way she could have been exposed to disease? Dog park? Meeting other dog? You might want to invest in a quick read thermometer for her rear end, like they use at the vets........normal temp range is 100.5°F to 102.5°F...101 average. Don't worry about the dog starving during the tummy rest!!! Remember their ancestors were wild dogs and wolves where the parents might be gone for 24+ hours finding food. These guys are tough....might try to play on your heart strings for food, but the result will be messy. Next time make Jacob clean up the mess. |

Her last vaccinations were a month ago, at the very end of April. We haven't been out anywhere lately aside from Jacob's parent's house, and they don't have dogs there. The only thing I can think of is that darn bug killer over there (which they keep telling me we should put down here- no way!!!). The last time we went out for a walk was like two weeks ago, way before any of this started. I'll look for a thermometer when I'm out, I should be able to find that at walmart right? I would make him clean it up but I promised when I got the dog, my dog my mess. She was all my idea. So I'm just not going to take his advice anymore! |
Yeah, your dog, your mess to clean up. Don't listen, good idea. I remember the pesticide being put down. Sometimes I think puppies get this during a grow spurt and not all part are in sync with other parts. If she is playing and being a pup, it obviously isn't causing her that much grief. |
Yeah, she's still acting totally normal, so I figure she can't be too sick. |
I am so pleased that they banned pesticide use on lawns here. We can visit people without worrying so much. Now if only they would ban teeny tiny Barbie shoes and stuff like that... |

Did you go back to the fast and then feed the bland diet? How is she feeling? Be sure that she is drinking water or even give her ice cubes. You should feed the bland diet for 72 hours. I always count out 6 meals. Hope that she's feeling better. |

So far everything is fine, no throwing up or anything. |
Okay, so she's so far had two tiny meals of the beef & rice and after each one, she's had more diarrhea (at least it's outside this time!). Is that normal, or should I be seeing improvement? I'm probably just being impatient but I thought I'd check. |
Have you called your vet at all? You might want to do so. My vet always prescribes the "withhold food for 24 hrs. And bland diet" for diahrrea. Sounds like this isn't working. I always have had success with this treatment. BTW, she should have no other food such as cookies. The fact that she is acting normally (yes?) is a good sign. Unresolved diahrrea is definitely not normal, however, and shouldn't continue very long particularly in a puppy. |

There wasn't any diarrhea yesterday, just the throwing up of her kibble in the afternoon. It kind of comes and goes. I haven't let her have anything at all today aside from the beef and rice. After each time I fed her the beef and rice, she had diarrhea within an hour of eating. She's acting completely normal though, so that is good. I guess I'll call my vet in the morning. |
We've mostly managed to get Ava under control over the weekend - I'm sorry to hear Eevee is still suffering I know that my vet recommends feeding boiled chicken and rice, not beef, but I do not know the reasoning behind that. It's possible that it's because her dog food is "Chicken and Rice" as well. |

We called the vet, and we have an appointment for tomorrow at two and she told me to continue feeding the bland diet. |
snazzierella wrote: re allergic to beef, that might have something to do with it. Chicken has less fat in it usually too. Some dogs are allergic to chicken too....so it may just be a personal vet preference. I have used beef and chicken in the past. Hoping everyone's tummy improves |
Dogs can have sensitives to all kinds of foods so it's a guessing game at first. Did you have a followup fecal check to verify the worms were gone? Puppies are always exploring with their mouths... they can pick up other things too. (Gads... don't eat THAT!) Glad you're going in for a vet check. |
We went to the vet today, he said there was a lot of I think it was clostridium? in her fecal, so we're on antibiotics. He said we should feed her cottage cheese until she gets better rather than the beef and rice, because cottage cheese is high in protein and moves slower through the digestive tract or something like that. |
Clostridium - a culprit for sure. It's a large family and many troublemakers in it! In our sheep, we vaccinate for 8 different clostridium strains. In humans, the common one you hear of is c.diff - Clostridium difficile. One we look for when we do stool specs for humans with uncontrolled diarrhea. (I'm an RN and farmer...lol) |
