Anyone with experience as a client of a Banfield Pet Hospital, and if so, which practice? Also, does anyone have their OES enrolled in Banfield's Optimum Health program, and what has been your experience? Thanks! |

I used to encourage people to sign up for this plan. However, after my final experience I will STRONGLY advise against it. After being a client for over 7 years they lost me as a customer forever over $329.45, and they don't care. I transfered hospitals and apparently in the paperwork to transfer the medical records the snuck in another 1year contract. My cat of over 18years, died one month later. When I tried to cancel the plan I was told that I would have to pay for the remaining 11 months. They make you pay for a DEAD PET!!! And you cannont transfer the contract to another living pet. Seems a little unethical to me. BEWARE |
I used Banfield for a few years until I caught them trying to give a vaccine I told them I did not want my dog to have.
My dog had constant ear infections, so the advantage of not having to pay for Vet visits was a plus.... but the fact that they knew it was the same thing every single time, yet made me come in for a visit each and every time was quite a pain. Especially because the dog was a 105 lbs German Shepherd who did not enjoy riding in cars. I could have easily brought in a swab of his ear guck, but they insisted and of course insisted on testing the guck every single time, which there was a charge for. Also the liked to change medications everytime so I'd have to buy a different one. I had requested panalog immediately. But they went through every single ear infection med before they finally gave me panalog, which worked in a matter of days. The vaccine was the last straw for me. It was a vaccine he did not even need in this part of the country, as lyme disease is not even an issue here. I knew he had been due for the other two vaccine. Good thing I questioned what the third needle was, or he would have gotten it. With my next Vet I immediately told him my dog had constant yeast infections in his ears. They gave me a flush to use weekly and his ears finally cleared up. If I did have a problem I would call them and tell them, same thing, ears smell like yeast. Unless he was due to come in for a vaccine they would tell me I could come and pick up some medication. So to me it seemed like Banfield was always trying to find something to charge for. Besides the over vaccinating. They kept giving him his vaccines before he was due for them. They figured why not...since they had him there anyway. Which was not a good thing. |
The only experience I've had with Banfield was with a stray cat a few years ago... our current vet couldn't work us in. The vet made it sound like they were going to give us this great deal on spaying her since she was going to go into rescue (we were paying the vettting/spay fees first). Come to find out it was about the same fee our regular vet normally charged
The thing to consider is what might happen if you find you're not pleased with the care your dog receives. IF the Banfield plan only covers services through Banfield vets you're kind of stuck with a vet you may not wish to keep. You might also find that your dog now has a pre-existing condition that no insurance company will now cover. You might also consider a policy through say the ASPCA (or another company) which provides benefits for covered services through ANY licensed vet in the USA or Canada. But if you've already got a great vet at a Banfield location, it may be a good choice for you. Note that on their website it says "Optimum Wellness Plan"... it doesn't mention paying for accidents or illnesses except for 20% listed as "Additional discounts for other services". So it's a wellness plan only and not a lot of help should an accident or illness occur. http://www.banfield.net/health/owp_adults.asp But maybe this is all you're looking for? |
