Well, after 2 months of Muffin's fur growing, it's getting time for me to choose an electric shaver so we can introduce him to grooming. He's obviously afraid of anything new, and so while he loves being combed/brushed, I know getting a haircut with a noisy shaver is not going to be a hit with him. I went to PetSmart and wow they're expensive, so I want to pick the best one to begin with. Who better to ask than all of you??? Thank you for any ideas and tips! |

I love my Andis clipper. Others swear by Oster. I am going to try to steer you away from PetSmart and to an online source simply because you will have more models to choose from. Try www.petedge.com and see what they have to offer. Their prices are usually very competitive. They ship quickly and have stock on both the east and west coasts. Their shipping charges used to be outrageous (IMO) but they seem to have lowered them to within reason lately. If I were you, I'd call them (they have a toll free no.) and after a quick chat with the salesperson who answers the phone, then ask to speak with a "technical specialist" about clippers and tell them you need to really chat with someone who knows their clipper line (and the exact specifications, such as which one is quieter, etc.) very, very well. That should get you through to the staff who have the expertise to help you pick the very best one for you. I have no affiliation with PetEdge, just think you might benefit from searching through their inventory of clippers. Linda Zimmerman & Hudson, Chloe & Kristy |
Perfect! Just the kind of information I need! Thank you |
Am a groomer and ive had most clippers. I too say andis. Nice to use, dont vibrate much and are quite quiet. I use heininger cordless now but still use my andis for nervous dogs and puppies. |
Two votes for Andis, so I will definitely check them out. Thanks! (And love your nickname, "SlaveToTheBrush") |
Andis here too - it's a good clipper |

Can you guys tell me which models you like to use? Muffins hair is thick and kinky like a wiry standard poodle, so i don't want to burn him if it takes awhile til we both get the hang of this. I have never done this before so I need something almost dummy proof... 1. Safe 2. Powerful so it doesn't overheat 3. Quiet 4. Low vibration Thank you!! |
I also use Andis for Bailee and although it does get hot, it is not the clipper but the blade that is heating up. They sell spray to cool it but sometimes that tends to goo up the blade. Multiple blades provide you the ability to switch off and use one while the other cools. One thing to note is that Andis (and Oster) blades are interchangeable. Suggest a #3 3/4 blade and getting one that is "skiptooth" as one option. I also have a ceramic blade and can alternate as needed. Hope your pup stays still for you, since our Bailee has proven it is hard to shave a moving target. lol |
i use the andis agc 2 speed its all the things you asked for. just remember keep putting it on the back of our hand to make sure the blade isnt too hot. use clipper oil to stop the friction on the blade and wash in blade wash too, it cools the blade down and cleans it, if you just dip the tip of a running blade in for a few seconds then dry it off and oil. you can also cool blades down on a ceramic tile i agree that the 3 3/4 is a nice blade to use i think its 12mm gives a plush cut. if the coat isnt matted you could try using comb attachments http://www.technogroom.co.uk/catalog/wa ... p-395.html these take the coat alot longer and are used with a #10 blade. they will not go through a matted coat! |
hey thanks everybody... I just ordered the andis, with both a #10 & a 3 3/4 and cooling spray... Keeping my fingers crossed that muffin doesn't come out with a Mohawk or something |
Late comer, but I too use Andis. I found the Oster a bit more noisey. If given an RPM preference, go with the slower, they don't heat as fast. Ditto multi blades, blade wash for cooling, etc. For Jack, my big boy, I run 3 or 4 blades at a time, changing, dunking, etc. Initially you can get by with one, but dunk to cool often. The hotter the blade the more likely you'll burn the dog or warp the blade. Make sure to brush out all grit before. Best is to brush out, bathe, dry and clip...you can do this over two days of course. When doing newbies, I've been known to spread the clip session over two sessions, even a day apart. Gives the dog a chance to get used to the experience. Blade size: I use from 3 3/4 to 10.....3, 5, 7??, 10 I think. Ten is pretty close and saved for limited specific areas....bum for example. I like a clear poop chute. I do have a 15 that is used when I encounter a booboo and need to remove hair around the wound...rarely used, thankfully. |
I have the Oster A5 and a Wahl KM2. I love the Wahl and it's actually cheaper than Andis or Oster. Doesn't run as hot as most clippers, either. No clipper is as quiet as we'd like for it to be. There really isn't a significant difference between brands unless you get a cordless clipper but they don't have much power. You will have to get your dog used to the sound as well as the vibration. Do it gradually, best to even work up to actually clipping hair by just running it while near him and using lots of treats so he knows it's a good thing. |
