Ava is getting feisty, and when she gets wound up, or heck even when she's not sometimes, you cannot walk near her without her grabbing your pant legs and thinking this is a fun game of tug of war. The kids can't even make it from their bed room to the bathroom without their pajama bottoms being pulled off With all the reading on dog training I'm doing, and going to obedience class, etc - no one has really addressed how I should actually admonish the dog when she does something I don't want her to - like trying to pants us! I've been told not to say "No!" I've been told not to put her in her crate or in a room by herself because it's "mean", and of course I would never ever physically reprimand the dog... So what do you do? How do you deter them from a behavior like this? I can say Leave It, or whatever in the sternest voice I can, and she doesn't give a flip. The teeth are on, the ears are OFF. Either post a link to a pair of puppy proof pants for all ages, or tell a poor haggard puppy mom how the heck I'm supposed to discipline this dog, lol. |

Oh yes....I remember this stage!!! I actually have a pair of jeans that we refer to as my Millie jeans! (she put many rips in them with razor sharp baby teeth) What we did was put her in the kitchen with baby gates at all of the doorways. When she tried to get our legs we would squeal and go over the gate and leave her alone in the kitchen for about 30 seconds. Then we would go back in and play with her. She quickly learned that if she went for our legs then fun ended and she was all alone. If she was good, then people wanted to stay and play. |
Have you tried "trade" Grab a stuffie or a toy and trade her for your pant leg? The good thing is this stage will pass.... Everyone has probably gone through it |
Sounds like Ava is in the puppy teething stage? They get very mouthy. If she is a puppy (and I apologize for not knowing ...I'm fairly new to oes.org) then I prefer at this stage to go with what I call the "fine art of substitution" and it's just what you think - quickly substitute with a more interesting item than pants! This can be a favorite toy or even a treat. Since part of the attraction of the pants is that they are MOVING, you may have better luck substituting with something else that MOVES, like a tug toy which you can use to play with Ava a bit until she forgets the pants. I'm all for teaching a puppy about "leave it" but that has to be done first, away from the pants issue, and then it can be applied to the pants after it has been learned/taught. At this point you just want the pant biting to stop and my suggestion is to go about it just as you would with a baby who is doing something that is not good (i.e. chewing on your cell phone) by quickly substituting something of equal or higher value to distract them from item number 1. I hope this gives you some immediate relief. Just my opinion. Linda Zimmerman & Hudson, Chloe & Kristy |
If switching the pant legs for a toy doesn't work for you, we spray them with a waterbottle when they are doing something wrong. |
Small cooking pan and a wooden spoon rapidly beaten on the bottom of the pan (not the put) will get through cloth ears |
lola has decided toes are the best to bite....since it is already super hot here...we walk around the condo barefooted....last night while trying to make dinner, the little shark was attacking my toes....i sent her out to brian where she attacked his toes.... what age do they start losing their baby teeth? i dont remember. |
I am wondering the same thing Darcy. We JUST got over the initial "chewing" phase - she's stopped the nipping and gnawing on our body parts, since all her puppy teeth are now in. Hubby mentioned her lack of alligator-ness this morning. We were wondering too when the puppy teeth would fall out, and the big girl teeth will come in. Because when they do... I'm buying steel toed boots. |
I used the substatue method of putting a toy in their mouth instead of my clothing or parts. The only thing I would think twice about is the squirting water as punishment. I'm sure in the future you will want to wash your dog outside or have him play in the hose and he might associate the "squirting" as a message to stop. Also, may make it harder to bath them at home. Just my own take on things. |
i dont think lola would have an issue with the squirt bottle...she stuck her face into the full blast commercial sprinklers last night...several times....lol |
