(Can I make a coat for her out of her old hair? She looks cold) |
|
Someone will have the answer to what is typical, but it really depends on the dog. My OES that didn't come from a quality breeder...her coat took FOREVVVVVVVER to grow ......an inch. 6 months later, she still had very short hair. |
Six months, in time for winter cold. Long hair, 9-12 months. It's OK, you have puppy transition hair....I'd shave too. Heck, I've decided to keep both of them short year round now. They are too old to brush out. They hate it. |
Here is a photo chronology of Chewie..... This might help you see how long it takes. Sept, 2008 *****Shavedown right around Halloween - late October 2008***** Just the greys shaved, to regrow out after puppy coat shaved off.....took a showing break until it regrew. December, 2008 Feb, 2009 (has a stick) - remember, just the body greys shaved, the head, legs and belly were left full length! April, 2009 May, 2009 July, 2009 |
The hair typically grows anywhere from 1/2" - 1" a month. Mine tend to grow the 1" a month. I've had 2 dogs in particular who grew even faster than that. When I shave down to the 3/4" length the dogs have a cute puppy cut look at the 2 month mark & the hair is about 3" long or more then. Don't worry about a coat. Your dog will love not carrying all that hair around especially in the summertime. I've never had to worry about suncreen on the noses etc. but then I really don't let my dogs out in the direct sun for any extended length of time. And no matter what their coat length, they always seem to have a lot of common sense & seek the shady areas. |
We are taking a break from showing and will have Dexter cut down Tuesday. He will get trimmed to 2-3" rather then shaving. He can't swim in full coat (mainly because of drying), his coat is still transitioning and I'm tired of 3+ hour table sessions 2-3 times a week. Winston is working on pulling it out anyway. I'll post some before and after pictures. |
I just had Hudson shaved with a 7 blade a month ago. That is nearly naked! He is already a bit fuzzy. In two more months he will probably be about 1-1/2" to 2" long. Since we do agility, etc. in the Southern California heat, I keep him very short now. I will be shaving him down once more before the summer is over. When I have shaved a puppy down at 8-10 months or so, I think it has taken about 10-12 months for it to be back in full coat. But it will look "fluffy" again in a few months. I find the fur grows slightly faster in the summer months than winter. I also have a theory that the fur grows slightly faster if you brush it regularly. It seems to stimulate the hair follicles. That is strictly anecdotal from my own experience - I am very sure there is no scientific study to support that theory. If one is going to shave a dog, I am all for doing it just as you have -- when the puppy to adult coat transition is happening. Saves a lot of wear and tear on the coat, the dog & you trying to keep up with the mats and also a lot of TIME which can be put to use playing with and training your youngster during this important time frame. Can you tell I am a big fan of shaving down dogs? I never was. For over a decade and a half I was totally for keeping everyone in full coat, even the senior dogs, and I did so. Then I found I prefer the freedom to do things other than grooming with the dogs with the time saved. But more importantly, I found the DOGS prefer being in shorter coat. Again, remember this is in Southern California where it is HOT HOT HOT in the summer. I do miss the grooming time, but I often put the dogs up on the grooming table for a massage instead, which they love. Just my opinion. Linda Zimmerman & Hudson,Chloe and Kristy |
