lyme disease vaccine

Two years ago I gave Butchy Advantrix II for ticks, he had a bad reaction so last year we managed without and used the emu oil like Dawn had mentioned that she use.

This year the ticks are terrible so we did try a different medication made by frontline and it seemed to be ok.

Called today to see about getting more and the tech mentioned the lyme vaccine, said Butchy never had that. Asked why it wasn't recommended since we get him everything else he needs, and her only answer was since we live up here he should probably have it. We did set up the appt but I am still mad, they never even gave us the option, why not.

Sometimes it gets very frustrating dealing with these people.

ilene,
there are alot of vets and dog owners who believe there are more risks associated with the lyme disease vaccine than what you are using. please google--lyme vaccine reaction in dogs

:wag:
Brick has gotten the Lyme disease vaccination all his life as deer ticks are bad around here.
He's never had a negative reaction to the vacc.
All of his bloodwork (the Snap 4DX or whatever it's called) has always been negative for Lyme disease.
So we must be doing something right.
You have to evaluate the pros and cons with your vet.
For me it would depend in large measure on how prevalent
ticks are in your area or any areas you may travel to with your dog.

I do agree though that your vet should have given you the information so that you could make an informed decision after discussing it with them. We have to be proactive on behalf of our pets' health. Some vets allow their personal bias to get in the way when deciding whether or not to offer some things, when it should (in my mind) really be a decision made together with owner after vet informs them of options.

Just my opinion.

I agree Linda, I was mad that they didn't even offer it when we went in for the regular checkup and vaccines.

We are in a very tick prone area and this year especially, according to the one gal at the desk we have a lot of the lyme disease up here, just want to know what to do if there is a reaction. Never even knew it was available.

Now, I don't know what to do. I read the information about the vaccine and there seems to be a lot of negativity. He had the bad reaction to the Advantrix II so would that mean he's more susceptible to a reaction of the medication. Maybe I'll just forget it for now and use the certifect as that didn't seem to bother him, I don't like using any of that but we've pulled 20-30 ticks off of him in just a few days.
We have a lot of ticks around here, including the deer ticks. Both my dogs have the vaccine. Our vet actually ran out of lyme vaccine the week Bailey was supposed to get hers, because it's been in such high demand here. My family has always done lyme vaccines for our dogs, and it's always worked out for us.

He may not have mentioned it because he's seen enough to realize that (a) the vaccine isn't very effective - for one thing it's only good for six months at a time, if that, if you use it you should at least time it so that it is given shortly before the onset of the tick season and hope it offers some protection throughout the season (b) it can induce a syndrome that mimic's lyme disease but is not susceptible to treatment. If your boy had already had a bad reaction to something else he may have written him off as a bad candidate for the vaccine. Though I do agree with Linda that he still should have told you about the vaccine and why he doesn't recommend it in your case (if that's the situation)

You are in a bad area for ticks and so tick borne diseases, unfortunately, and not just at risk for lyme but also erlichia, or whatever it's called these days. One thing you may want to consider is running snap tick test twice a year (many of us test once a year when we do heart worm testing). They test is relatively inexpensive, and then hopefully if he is infected with something you can catch and treat early.

Although, lyme disease and ticks are quite prevalent in NJ, I have never gotten the vaccine for my dogs. My vet does not recommend it due to the high number of side effects that she has seen. My SIL's last golden had a terrible reaction and I will never forget that. So, we use Frontline plus here. We also have been told to use a tick collar for the really bad months which is a special collar perscribed by the vet. I think you need to weigh the pros and cons and do what you think is right.
Have decided against taking the chance. I will continue with the medication they gave us to try but I asked about having him tested again and they didn't think it was necessary. Told them he had been bitten but still didn't think it was necessary. They claim they haven't had any serious reactions to the shot but then again did any get reported or just ignored by the owners, there is that up here too.

My granddog who lives in Grafton has a mild case of lyme, the vet said with all the ticks out they are having cases down there even tho it's unusual. He feels that with the mild winter we had, the tick population didn't die off like normal.
all i know is if i ever live in tick territory again i will give it to my kids.
If dogs with Lyme disease feel anything like i have been feeling OMG i feel so very very sorry for them!

It is kind of like m.s./ and goes in and out of remission. I am in extreme pain in spring and fall.

Poor pups.
Our vets have always offered the lymes vaccine to Pooh and now to Angus. With Angus we were also encouraged to get the Canine Leptospirosis since we have ponds behind our house and there have been cases brought into the clinic. We have had no reaction from either shot from both dogs. Angus is due soon for the lymes injection and I will be sure to question how effective it is.
