Neem Oil for Fleas/Ticks

I've been reading alot about this natural deterrent, Neem Oil, for dogs for ticks/mosquitoes and fleas...I was just outside and got bitten alive by mosquitoes...Can I spray their Neem oil spray on myself????
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
Probably. Neem oil has been used for a variety of purposes, from birth control to tooth cleaner.....No, I've never figured out the commonality on that either. Read the ingredients, if just Neem oil, you are probably fine. I can't stand the smell so would probably dilute it a bit.
Works, I get it in a soap bar, I dont know how the actual full strength oil is applied, the neem oil soap bar is made for animals and YES listed on that as well as beneficial for animals with skin problems, also a natural repellant for fleas, ticks, lice, flies, mozzies in fact any heebie geebie insect that can invade animals. I think in india it has been used for centuries. A nice natural product with so much to offer. In the actual oil form would probably water it down and mist over pooches and areas like beds, carpet etc.

I like the smell and been using the soap for years. Rather that then the harsh insecticides and poisons we put on our animals, especially when they say on the instructions, if got on skin wash and rinse thoroughly 8O Yet we apply this to our pooches skin to be absorbed into there systems 8O

Try it, just check the break down for the oil on its own, if not go for the neem soap and try.

I know teatree oil can be toxic if not known the break down of that from its purist form and yes another natural treatment in a properly mixed substance that can be beneficial to the skin and repell heebie geebies as well . Lavendar, penny royal are another essential oils to repell also, but like all this stuff needs to be known the exact mix for squirting on pooches and there surrounds.

Interesting, but the section on making the repellent is missing....still waiting to be written.

Please note there are different species of mosquitoes. Neem has been shown to be effective against tropical buggers but it's still not well researched on North American blood suckers.

Which makes me think about dog protection and mosquitoes :lmt: with the sprays. In other words there has not been much scientific study on neem and animal use in climates other than India. Even then I wonder how much has been scientific??
How To Use Neem On Dogs Against Mosquitoes, Fleas and Ticks.

To make neem oil spray for dogs (or any other pets) you need 100% pure organic neem oil, the raw (or crude), smelly stuff, not the refined oil extract.

You could use neem oil extract as well, but it does not work as well.

(For more information see the page on neem plant spray, and the page on how neem affects pests.)

If you want to use the neem for dogs to generally improve the skin health and the coat of your dog, then using neem oil extract is probably fine. If you are hoping to fix some problem, like fleas, ticks, mange or similar, then you have much better chances with raw, unrefined neem oil.

Neem oil is no different from other natural substances. The moment you start processing and refining them, they lose a lot of their active ingredients.

With that said, lets look at how to make neem oil spray for dogs or cats:

Neem Dog Spray Recipe

The method for making a neem oil spray for dogs is the same as for a plant spray. Only the amounts are different.

Always prepare this neem spray freshly, and use it immediately. Once neem oil is dissolved in water it starts breaking down. Keep the solution for no more than eight hours.

Amounts And Concentration

A 0.5% - 1% solution is strong enough as a repellent spray to protect dogs from mosquitoes, fleas etc. However, if your dog already has a problem with fleas or ticks you can use a stronger solution.

You can increase the concentration of this standard solution much higher, up to 10% (just remember that it will also take a lot more soap to dissolve the oil).

And instead of spraying you can also sponge it over and through the coat of your dog. Such a strong solution will keep even buffalo flies and sandflies away! But usually it's just not required to waste that much oil. A little neem oil goes a long way.

For 0.5 liters of a 0.5% solution of neem oil dog spray you need:

2.5 ml neem oil
1 ml mild soap or detergent
0.5 liter warm water

For 0.5 liters of a 1% solution of neem oil dog spray you need:

5 ml neem oil
2 ml mild soap or detergent
0.5 liter warm water

Method
Use warm (not hot!) water, the oil will dissolve much better.
Mix the warm water with the soap first!
Then slowly add the oil while stirring vigorously.
Fill the mix into your sprayer.
Use immediately.

Making Neem Dog Shampoo

Just mix neem oil into your normal dog shampoo at a rate of 1 to 5 ml for every 100 ml of shampoo. Use less if your dog does not have any problems, and more if it does.

How To Use The Neem On Dogs

Prevention of problems: you can use this neem oil dog spray whenever you want to protect your dog from biting or sucking insects. You can also use the same spray as a personal insect repellent on yourself. And last but not least you can use the leftovers to spray the dog's bedding, rugs etc. It discourages fleas, mites, mosquitoes, and to some extent ticks.

Unfortunately the solution is not stable, you have to make it freshly every time you want to use it. For preventive spraying one of the commercially available neem oil insect repellent sprays for dogs may be a handy solution.

You can also get or make a neem dog shampoo, and bathe your dog with that. This will leave a smell of neem oil behind in the coat, enough to discourage annoying pests.

Treating problems: if your dog is already struggling with fleas or ticks use the stronger version. Don't expect it to work wonders immediately, especially with ticks! Neem oil does not necessarily kill pests on contact. It works slowly by affecting mostly the eggs and larvae.

To treat an existing problem it's best to give the dog a wash first. Use a mild shampoo with a generous amount of neem oil added, work that into the coat and leave it in for a while. Then rinse and use the spray. Do this at least once a fortnight.

The neem dog shampoo makes sure the neem oil really gets everywhere. It's more effective at reaching the ticks and fleas that are already present. The neem dog spray increases the repellent action of the neem oil, since the shampoo needs to be rinsed out. The spray will hopefully keep additional pests away.

Don't expect miracles over night. You will need to keep this neem dog treatment up for a while until all pests are dead, not only those on your dog, but also those hiding in the bedding, the carpets, the floor boards, the yard...
