http://www.mint.com/blog/consumer-iq/the-lifetime-costs-of-pets-042012/?display=wide $700 on leash and collar!?! We dropped a cool $98 on the largest crate that PetSmart carried. We will probably spend less on training with Zoey, and more than this on Caitlyn. And we may blow the numbers for treats and toys pretty close to theirs. However, Caitlyn STILL loves to shred boxes, so we may not come that close after all. So, how close or far are you? Vance |

I would agree that everything else seems reasonable...depending on breed. But that $720 for collar and leash seems to be a bit far fetched |
Guess it depends on what you do with your dogs I thought about the collars & leads being a bit high too until I looked in my tack box (Ask Vance!) Of course I save on the grooming expenses totally (unless you count my grooming sprays $26.00 a bottle, special shampoos $49.00 a gallon, hairdryers, scissors ......we won't go there ). Crates...hmmmm....med. size to travel in the van, large softsided for hotels & obedience, large metal for conformation shows (& this is for each dog!) Medical.....I've already surpassed that just with1 surgery on 1 dog but then I have relatively healthy Mariah who seems to just keep going like the energizer bunny so I suppose tht levels it out there. Training.........I'm well over that cost. Jim looks at my supply of stainless steel bowls & buckets & often asks me how many dogs we actually have! Guess my thoughts always have been....DON'T ADD IT UP! Sticker shock! |
Put the collar and leash into vet bills, that's not even close. Try having 3 on arthritis meds. |
They must have had a Yuki who never got better [for the leashes]. We may have come close at the rate we were going. We only do the xl/giant retractable leashes and they were 45-56 dollars, add in each halti, gentle leader, puppy harnesses we got ....each lasting just a few MONTHS before we had to buy a new one. I struggled so much to buy a new one b/c I knew what would happen but Mr. J would say retractable or no leash. ...and I CAN NOT STANDDDDDDDD being "that" person in the neighborhood who thinks her dog is liked by everyone. So, I kept buying them. She just bit right through each one by grabbing the leash while we walked. Thankfully they're lasting a year now because she's more interested in keeping up with the wandering kids than she is in telling us to hurry up. |
I hate retractable leashes! I'd much rather deal with a lot more static leash than the jerking and reeling of those retractables. Some of my leather leashes are 43 years old! |
These number were allegedly based on an average. So for the Vet bills, if there is one or two that were in those surveyed that had hip dysplasia, or something else financially taxing like that, it's gonna skew the numbers big time. As an example, in the ten years we had our Cocker, even with his cancer and bad teeth, we didn't hit that $5K+ mark. With Bentley, our first OES, we could have hit that $5K mark with his cancer treatment but did go that route for his sake. Looking at this with the fact that is is probably also all based on the ownership of one dog, a tack box full of things like collars and leads probably wouldn't figure in like in Marilyn's case as I'll bet those were bought over the years for many different dogs. I don't think that I've spent $300 total on al four dogs we've had. Caitlyn may change that to some degree, but I'll bet not to the tune of another $400. Vance |

I hate them too. An accident waiting My leather leads aren't that old, but a couple of decades or so on a few of them. They pretty much last forever unless you get a puppy with a leather fetish and an owner who forgets about same Been there, done that, sigh. My favorite leash, too, of course. $700 in leashes and collars? Sure, now, after ten or so dogs and many activities later.... My dogs should probably file a complaint that I apparently dress them in the canine equivalent of k-mart. I've rarely spent more than $15-20 on a collar, if that. Roughly the same on a decent leather leash. No kangaroo leashes in this household. I'm sure their k-9 friends snicker behind their backs. Kristine |
Leather fetish.....that sums up Basil St. Bernard. He ate several leashes, boots, etc. Rawhide chew or leash, he didn't care. |
Using the article's figure and applying to all the dogs we've had........ Averaging out over all the dogs, I hope the figure is actually much lower |
I wish I never calculated the food price. I never sat down and calculated for their lifetime. YIKES! But hey they are health. But my thinking is they won't need vet visits as much. Knock on wood. Since I have had them they have had no issues. No skin issues no tummy issues etc. |
Leashes & collars - hmmm... a rolled leather every day collar $20, a martingale training collar $15, a 6 ft. leather leash for rally $22, a 3 ft. braided leather leash for training $22, a 10 ft. cotton long line for training, $12, a long (26 ft.) flexi for pottying dog on the road $35, a short (16 ft) flexi for pottying in tight quarters on show grounds $28, a nylon comfort harness for nose work training $30, 20 ft. a biothane long line for training $31, a British style slip lead for easy-on, easy-off at agility start line $16. Total $231. And most of the different long lines, etc. are used for all of the dogs so do not have to buy 4 sets of everything. Not sure how one would possibly spend more than that on collars & leashes unless one were purchasing Swarovski crystal decorated ones for "dressy" occasions??? Surprising to see how much is spent on treats vs. how little spent on training. Linda Zimmerman |
oes wrote: Surprising to see how much is spent on treats vs. how little spent on training. Linda Zimmerman You & I need to think outside the box here! The majority of dog owners NEVER pay for any type of training or training class for their dogs. I guess they think walking a dog while it pulls your arm out of your socket is fun . No really, most worry more about what their dog might like for a treat than they do how to do anything at all with their dog except take it outside now & then for a walk & to have it sit with them when they watch TV! My TV watching is done while I groom. And dog training classes are built into the budget! I suppose this is the reason why I'll never be able to retire! |
I'll be right there with you in the anti-retirement home!! Vance |
Well looking at that £1500 dog bath £3000 ish for grooming Cabin £400 for grooming table £300 for Hair dryer Plus grooming brushes & combs and other stuff over 14 years for the dogs life Money for dog classes was not too bad £100 a time for dog shows inc fuel cost My dog lives better than me |
I won't add mine up....don't want to think about it. I spend more on them than me. |
Those figures are probably pretty close to average--spending more on some areas and less on others... But the return on that investment...PRICELESS! |
I haven't spent anything on bedding and I don't plan to, I give the dogs the blankets I don't sleep on anymore. They like that. (: That's free! (Woo!) Collars and leashes, if you include the harnesses and Bailey's canny collar and my seatbelt attachments, I'm at $150 for both dogs. I don't crate my dogs, so no expense there. Food is probably what costs me the most, since I have Bailey's food costing me 50 per month and Eevee's costing me abut 30 per month. If you add that up for ten years worth, that puts me at $9600. Which is over what they said, but I'm counting for two dogs. I want to do all my grooming myself, so the only costs I should have are supplies. I'm at like $38 so far in brushes and shampoo. I don't even want to try to figure out how much I've spent on vet bills so far... lol. Eevee isn't spayed yet, but Bailey's cost about $235, so a little over. Toys... I'd guess around 35 in bought toys. I like to reuse old socks and bottles as toys, too. I haven't spent anything on training yet, but that'll change when we start obedience and then agility, of course. I don't know how much that's going to cost me yet, so I can't really figure it in. We don't buy a lot of treats. Treats are for training mostly, and sometimes they get one just for being so darn cute We've only bought one bag of treats since we got Eevee, that one was like $8. I had a box of milkbones before that, but they were only a dollar because I got them from the discount place. Vaccines, yeah those cost a lot. I don't really have a number. I try not to think about it. Overall, I think we're under most costs on there aside from food and vet bills, even counting for both of my dogs. |
Marilyn, You are right - I forgot that you, I, and most on this list are atypical dog owners. Yes, dog training classes ARE built into the budget in this household, too. (Doesn't everyone do that???) Linda Zimmerman |
