Nice Job! we teach the "other" shake...the whole body shake-off after a bath...and looks like Lady could have done that one as well Actually, I don't teach the handshake one to my dogs ever - we do therapy dog stuff, and having a foot come flying up at people is a bad thing. Especially as once they learn it, it's a behavior they tend to offer on their own. |
Dawn...any hints on how you teach the dogs to "shake after a bath"? I've tried, but never had much luck. Would come in handy in many situations! Dawn |

Dawn One easy way is to catch them in action - and reward it. My dogs know the word "Yes!" as a verbal marker - whatever they just did is what I wanted - so that speeds up anything I want them to learn. (very handy skill! ) Also, if you clean their ears out in the bath, you are almost guaranteed a shake - so that is one time when you can say "shake" and then get the behavior pretty reliably. I also hold up the bath towel (like a shield in front of me) when I say it, so that is another visual clue for the dogs. In the same vein, my dogs also know I lay down a bath towel on the floor, and not to hop out until it is there. If you are consistent and really praise it, they will do pretty much anything |
WELL DONE! Bloo can shake too, but i use the word "manners", everytime he sits he lifts his paw, because he thinks he is going to get something nice if he acts cute. He only lifts one paw though, i havent managed to get him to other shake. He only always shake with the right foot, he never lifts the left one. He is strange lol So glad you are coming along with all the tricks....Keep us updated on the list of tricks!!! As for the shaking after bath, bloo does that without command, he just shakes all over and the water splatters all over the house. |
