Another Bright Idea

Dh takes Gar for agility training and I take Simon. Simon is much farther ahead then Gar, who is nowhere near ready for competition.

Dh is going to be down for months because of knee replacement so I got this great idea. Why don't I start training Gar.

I don't agree with the way that dh trains him and I think maybe I can fix him. Gar not dh. Gar has the attention span of a gnat and I think with training I can work on that.

Dh is not too keen on the idea but I think if I work it right, I can give him back his dog when he's ready and a dog that is trained much better then he is right now.

Good, or bad idea?

We have a husband and wife who each have agility dogs at my classes. Actually, husband is built like Randy and the wife like you....but I digress!

Hubby has a seasoned but stubborn male Chesapeake, wife has a young and somewhat flighty female BC (so total opposite dogs). Hubby had major eye surgery, prism lenses (messed with his depth perception), and more eye surgery. All told he missed about a year of trialing. His wife ran his dog on occasion, and it was really hard on both of them at 1st. But Koz (chessie) did eventually figure out how to run for her, and did get a few Q's at trials.....he's not a big Q-er with hubby either.

So, it can work...and it didn't affect the dog/handler bond either. Koz was very happy to be back running for hubby as soon as he was able. :)
Bad idea unless Randy is totally onboard. Wrong or right in the training department, Gar really is more his dog, just like Simon is more your dog, and at the end of the day it's more important that they have fun together than ribbons.

Randy's biggest challenge with Gar is that he has a problem giving him information in a timely manner. Hopefully the knee replacement will help with that :-) Gar doesn't have the attention span of a gnat, however. He just reacts differently than Simon when not given timely information (Simon zooms, Gar checks out mentally). He's also fundamentally a softer dog than Simon and won't be so forgiving of handler error.

That said I'm sure you could get more out of him right now than Randy because he needs a handler who can run. BUT....if Randy doesn't necessarily want you messing with his dog and they're happy doing what they're doing...? if he's cool with it, then go for it.
