I'm back. I wrote a couple of months ago apprehensive about getting an OES. Well, she's here! She is going to be 11 weeks on Wednesday and I love her! We have a few problems we're trying to work out with Sky. My biggest problem is she eats her poop! YUK! Really grosses me out! Anyway, I knew if I came here someone else would have had the same problem. Only took me going back 7 pages to find it. A lot of good info. I've tried the pineapple and it didn't seem to work. She didn't really digest it all the way. And it didn't stop her from eating the poop. I tried the Adolph's tenderizer, but I think I might have put too much in her food (How much should I add?). She just sniffed and walked away - wouldn't eat it. Now I'm on the pumpkin and hoping that works. We also do the "Dog Listener" thing and distract her with a treat afterwards and praise her a lot. I must admit some of it might be stress. I have a dog run on the side of my house. But since we haven't had a dog in about a year it was filled with a boat and a camper! When we first started taking her out, we had to use a leash so she wouldn't go under the boat and camper and hurt herself. She was so busy fighting the leash she wouldn't go. Very frustrating. We cleared out the area and now we can just let her out and praise her when she goes - no more fighting. Works out much better, but she's still eating her poop! So, I was wondering if I could hear some success stories about getting your puppies to stop eating their poop! Thanks! |

This is called coprophagia. I have a book about natural healing and it reccomends calc. carb. and China officinalis given in chronic dosages( 1 tablet 3xday for one week, then 1 tablet2xday for 3 weeks) I assume you could get this from a homoeopathic vet, the internet or a natural food store like Whole Foods Market. Good luck. |

Just enough to sprinkle over food. It did not work for me either for another breed. I'm glad you're enjoying your new family member. I hope you find some solution. |
Irisheyes-
Barney, my almost 9 month old sheepie ate his poop when we first got him (he was 6 months old when he came to us) and it grossed me out too. I think he was stressed by his new living situation (we got him from California, so we had to fly him across the country) plus living with new people, etc, so the first few weeks were difficult in general in figuring out what to feed him (we were feeding him the same thing his old owner fed him, but he wouldn't touch it, so we added some cottage cheese and voila!)...but basically as he settled down he stopped eating his poop. We also took him out on a leash to for his 'business' and that really helped too, because we could yank him away whenever he decided to do anything more than sniff. Also, being good to clean out the area all the time helps too, because if there is no temptation... Good luck--I know it's gross, but hopefully Sky will grow out of it! |

I think I was told that you put it on the poop to discourage them from eating it???? Seems to me that the ones that do that, like it better in winter when it becomes "poop-cicles". Sorry, but true. lol |
We have a name for this: there are carnivores, and vegivores (?), and then POOPIVORES!
But we've never had our sheepdog's eat their own...they mostly like treasure hunting in the litterbox |
