Yes, very cute, but I'd have trouble bidding in Chinese. Someone will pick them up and make available here.
How do your OES behave in the car? My girl tries to herd the other cars, knocking herself about on the windows. The boys try to drive. Needless to say, we don't go far together. |
Clyde goes to sleep as soon as the car starts moving. He doesn't really even care about looking out the window until we stop. I think the motion of the car just puts him right out! |
Ben seems to like going for car rides, but each and everytime we go, no matter how short a ride, he pees in the back seat. I always let him relieve himself right before he gets in, and he jumps in the back all happy, and then a half a mile up the road I hear it.
I now line the back seat with a plastic table cloth with a cotton mattress pad on it. Our trainer thinks it is some kind of car sickness. |
Bailey likes riding in the SUV. He sits up and looks out the windows the whole time. His new trick is to stand with his front paws on the center console and look out the front window with us. We keep expecting him to fall over but his balance is pretty good and he's just insistent about being there. He's like the Captain of the Ship, and we are his crew.
The only problem is that he's still not good at getting in and out of the truck by himself. Hopefully he'll figure out soon because he's getting pretty big! |
Jasper LOOOVES riding in the car! He's been in it a lot though. Coming home to us, he had a 10 hr flight..then we had to turn around & drive for 2 hours. He's been on 4 trips to Shreveport with us (6-7 hour trips one way). All of this in the last 4 months we've had him! He also pretty much goes everywhere with us, unless we plan on shopping or something. Not going to leave him in the car for that. We go to my parent's house every week, and that's a 1 hr trip (one way). Good thing he does like it so much! lol |
Must be those long plane rides. Our first sheepie came from the UK. From then on she was game for any ride no matter how long or short. We had a Volvo wagon, she'd lay down on the flat folded area and rest her head between the two front seats. She camped, hiked, fished, etc with us. A real trooper! Kept a bear out of our camp site, chased off cows......until one turned around and chased her, LOL.

Benny loves to ride in the car (especially with the roof down). However, I have some trouble getting him into my car. I have a VW Cabrio and even when the front seat is folded forward there is a limited amount of space for him to climb in. But once, I get him in he loves itQ |
Six year old Rosco can't get out of the driveway without peeing, vomiting or something. Of my 4 he is the WORST traveler I have ever see |
Spike is a dream in the car. He sits in the passenger seat soooo well-behaved (unlike every other place). He doesn't bark, doesn't try and nip at me, I swear I wish I could drive him around all the time!! |
Same with Max, if he's in the car, he's soo happy and behaved. He sits in the passenger seat usually and just looks out at everyone and everything. He wedges himself in between the front seats and licks your face while you drive. I try to take him with me whenever I can, it does get crowded when our whole family takes Max as our car is a 5 seater and Max makes 6 |
My girls are awesome in the car, though Sky prefers the front seat. If I put her in the back she just lays there and enjoys the ride, but she seems happier when I put her in the front, she loves to watch everything go by.
Dancer prefers to lay down in the back. |
HI, I found with both my sheep dogs that a harness attached to the seat belt provided protection and stability for my dogs who were both very different in the car. Toby, of fond memory, sitting in the passenger used to throw himself at passing trucks and actually broke my windshield doing that. While Bently was much quieter, loved the back seat and wore his belt as protection against sudden stops. |
Hi,
Lynda that's a good idea regarding purchasing a harness/seatbelt..they start at aprox 25 dollars in most pet stores and are interchangable from harness to seatbelt. Merlin is an absolutely angel in the car and we used to get a lot of laughs and second looks when he rode in the front seat of my sports car. Ahhh how often have we said ,"If I knew then...what I know now". Hense, from the time Merlin was only 8 wks I drove him in my car ..even just around the block daily so he'd get used to it. You get smarter over the years with more dogs and this is one of the things I swore I would do should I ever get a pup. Blue has been riding in cars all the years I've had him, but like yours he was a back/front seat driver too and would try to get into the front seat so clipping him in his back seat helped. Panda chased cars and barked while inside the van, which is kinda startling especially since I still drove the sports car when he first arrived. I only drove short distances but it was too frightening expecially in a small car. My solution was to purchase a large extended van ---ole beater but very reliable so I can have all three dogs in it and each has their own seat. Panda's barking was solved when the other two would get upset when he did this. So , sometimes they do learn from each other! One thing that I have found extremely handy is I never place them in a different seat - even if I have them alone. We've got it down to an art now!!! I open the van and each dog automatically goes to their seat. Marianne |
I got my car harnesses on ebay for about 7 dollars. Shipping was pretty cheap for them also.
I got 2 different styles; a padden and wool lined one that has a full chest piece that can also be used with a leash, the other is all straps and can only be used in the car. The ones with the full chest piece seem to work better. I wouldn't get the ones that are lined if you have a full coated dog, it just seems to be too hot. |
Our OES, Annie, has managed to unbuckle herself from the seat belt holding the car harness everytime. In her excitement to "chase cars" that are parked on the side of the road (apparently to her they are moving!) or cars passing by, she jumps around so much (barking too of course!) that she unhooks the belt holding the harness. Any ideas? Maybe Blue and Merlin could come for a ride with us and teach her the rules of the road like they did with Panda!
Right now, it takes at least two of us to take her in the car...one to drive and one to "train" her. She only rides in the van on the floor (where she can't see out) with me sitting in back with her to keep her in a sit or down position...needless to say, not much fun for any of us! P.S. She also REALLY wants to chase cars on walks - we're making some progress with that, but it is a VERY strong instinct in her. |
Have you tried attaching the lead to the harness and running it around the back of the seat, attaching the free end to the harness on the other side? I did that with Toby and it at least kept him in his seat. He actually gave up barking and trying to chase the cars when he found that he had to stay in his seat. When he tried leaping about, I pushed him back saying " Stay on your own side" which I shortened to "own side" and he did! We were on a cross country trip (Ontario to BC) when I did that. Daily repetition seemed to have worked and he learned the rules of the road as we travelled. He never relapsed after that trip. Lynda |
Thanks Lynda...
I hadn't thought about putting her in the front seat and wrapping the lead around to keep her in place. I've always been trying to put her in the back and couldn't find anywhere to hook the lead. I will certainly give it a try. Maybe it's time for a really looooooooonnnng car ride... |
Hi Jenny,
Yuppers, dogs can teach each other good behaviors...but then again..they pick up bad behaviors from each other too! Yesterday, a trip to the vets across town was the first time I had Panda for a long distance without the other two. It was quiet!!! He didn't bark even if they weren't in the car to "tell" him to be quiet!!! Yah!! Took a year so I'm doing the happy dance. When Panda first arrived at my home...he was the worse dog I've ever seen regarding chasing cars...this was not only those driving by...but parked ones too!! Gawd, never thought I'd be able to walk on a sidewalk with this boy as he wanted to leap on every vehicle that was parked on the side of the street. I was scared he'd scratch their cars and neighbors would be yelling at me! I had to walk in the middle of the road on sidestreets. Here's what I did. I sound like a broken record...sorry about that, but I know from experience that all the initial hard work and repetitive stuff you do in the beginning pays off long term. I just didn't want to spend the next 10 years or so dealing with it. I sat in a park...just calmly patting Panda and we watched cars drive by and watched people across the street mowing lawns. LOL It took 6 wks...a few mins each day. Eventually desensitizing him to wanting to chase them. Next was walking on the sidewalks of very busy streets and high traffic areas...I made sure I kept hold of his leash very firmly should he decide to leap towards the road. I only had to do this for a week or two...and YIPIIIIIII no longer a problem at all!!! At least once or twice a week I walk up to the gas station up the street from me where they have a tying pole for dogs. Panda sits and waits while I momentarily go in for a purchase. No reaction from him to the numerous cars driving in and out!! When I started it was just with Panda so I could focus all my attention on him. I did it every day for 2 wks and would pray no one would pull in near where he was tied. Pop into the store and come out immediately..give him lots of pats and extend the time every visit. Oh sheesh.. good thing I'm not shy as I probably looked silly watching people mow their lawn or go into a store to go back out right away. I think the reason I was so determined is, having so many dogs in my past..I realized that whatever isn't corrected over time...wears on you after 5...7...10 years. So again, lost of work initially but you'll get more pleasure out of the furballs in the long run! Another thing I did when he rode in my previous car and would scare the heck outta me so much with his leaps and snarls. I drove a two seater sports car so the confined space and his craziness was a factor that really affected where I could take him. A vet visit was out of the question, or dog obedience , distant parks...all that stuff, as I couldn't drive very far with him. Okay sounds silly again but to desensitize them ...my best advice is don't do it when you have to go somewhere. Start out with driving daily to the end of the block and back. That's it! Then increase it after a week...to say around the block....then 4 blocks...it might take a few weeks but pays off! As I couldn't place a harness on Panda at the time...I looped his leash around so that he couldn't leap and was restrained. Probably not highly recommended as an accident would have possibly injured his neck but at the time it's the only solution I had. Driving around the block daily eventually solved the barking as he became used to the car. Yeah...I know my neighbors must think I'm nutty! Ha Ha! A treat for them to concentrate on like a Kong, may help too...as they are so focused on that they forget about the ride. Then it's over and it's a success. Hey good luck! You can borrow Merlin and Blue anytime! I need the rest..ha ha. |
We can't get Hendrix to jump in the car. It's bizarre, we need to lift him up every time (he's 4 1/2 months, so it's quite a task) and he's fine in the car. He'll even jump out of the car, but he will NOT jump in it. We've even tried both of us sitting in the back seat encouraging him to jump in (we must be a sight to anyone who walks by).
We've brought out his favorite treats, toys, nothing coaxes him in. Any suggestions? |
Bailey is the same age and he has the same problem, but he won't jump in or out of the truck. Today I'm taking him to the groomer in my car (a Sebring Convertible) so maybe a different car will help. The car is lower but the front seat is pretty small. Good thing the groomer isn't far. |
I've seen those ramps in the dog catalogs but that seems a little extreme.
I have a Mazda Protege, so it's not too low to the ground. My fiance's Chevy Cavalier is lower, but still he's a no go. |
Does he jump up on the bed/sofa/whatever?
Maybe train him using that... give the command "up up" and praise and treat. Back down. "up up" praise and treat. Repeat. Repeat.... oh yeah, repeat. Move to a different item in the house, again one preferably already "jumped up on". Same thing. Repeat. Try it outside on another object. Try the car again. |
That's a good idea! I'll try that, thanks! |
By the way, Bailey was happy to jump out of the Sebring - much closer to the ground. Added incentive was that he was in the front, bucket seat and HATED it! He just couldnt get himself comfortable. So I guess we're back to working on getting in and out of the truck |
Richardson loves riding in a car with me. He starts out in a back sit then climbs his way over the console into the front passenger sit. He looks adorable with his long ears flopping in the wind and a puddle of drool beneath him |

We've brought out his favorite treats, toys, nothing coaxes him in. Any suggestions? Clyde is 8 months old and over 70 pounds. He will not get in the car on his own. In fact, getting up on anything without a running start is just a sad ordeal. To really appreciate it, I need to take a video so you all can see what a big goof I have. As he has gotten older he will put his front paws up into the car so I grab him by the back legs and hoist him up and he army crawls on his belly the rest of the way in. It's really something to see. Our neighbor asked me if he had health problems when he saw me do it and all I could reply was "If you call being a huge lazy butt a health problem, yup, he's pretty sick." |
Max is sort of like Clyde, when it's time to get in the car he can put his front paws up on the seat but I have to get under his butt and push him in the car!! It is soo funny, when we get out he gets in the driver's seat after I get out of the car, and then I have to put one arm under his front legs and the other under his hind and lift him to the ground, I know he could get out himself, but he seems to thrive on attention |
This weekend we got him in the car by placing his front feet on the back seat and went to put his back feet, but he jumped in then.
We'll continue rewarding him for jumping in the back seat, I hope it works, he's at 50 lbs officially! |
Yay! Big step forward! |
Yahhhh that's great news Hendrix's mom! Keep on working at it. Love that racoon look your boy has. He's a cutie!
I'm crossing my fingers the other furballs will follow suit and become used to sitting in cars. The telegraphic ramps is probably only recommended for dogs with arthritis or hip problems..as they are quite costly and usually only suitable for vans or SUVs. Marianne |
Max and Falcore absolutely loove to ride in the car. If you pick up the seat belt harness for any reason, you have to take them for a ride. Even if you just go around the block. So far they have gone from MO to South Dakota and back, From Mo to Arkansas and back and from MO to Pennsylvania and back twice. Not one single problem. Also the seat belt harnesses make the whole stop to potty thing a lot easier. However anytime you stop to potty with two big hairy boys it takes some time because for some odd reason they seem to draw a big crowd. |
Gucci herds cars too! It is very funny! My favorite is when we are on the highway and someone is riding to close to our back bumper and he turns and sits and stares at them thru the back window! He also likes to stick his mouth out the window and DRINK the air! He loves car rides! He is deaf and the sign for car is pretending to steer with both hands, when to do that he goes straight to the door and parks his bum down until you open it, and runs to the car! |
I am so glad Watson outgrew his car sickness. He is pretty good although he can only stand the cars going by so long then he starts barking at them. As long as we are going he either lays down or sits where he can see between the seats and look out the window. The people in the cars all turn around to see this dog barking at all the passerbys. |
Max is well behaved in the car, but he drools like crazy! Five minutes into the ride he has two long strands of drool hanging on each side of his mouth. Yuck!!
He also refuses to get into the car. He'll put his two front feet in, then I have to boost his two back legs in. Maybe he's just a little lazy, knowing that mommy will do it for him?? |
Clyde does the same thing, maxsmom. My 80 pound oaf makes me hoist his back legs into the truck. I told him he should be embarassed but it's like he doesn't even care. Clyde has no shame. |
Morgan LOVES car rides, I think she likes it more than her treats!!
Theres times she will sit by my car and wine. All I have to do is open the doors and shes jumping in. I have learned to keep her in the house while cleaning it or bringing bags from shopping or else she will just jump in it and get in my way and wont get out. She also LOVES going on the boat!! She will just walk around it and relax all day... the good thing is as soon as she sees a dock, she gets ready to jump out to pee and back on the boat agian, lol. |
Clyde Mom,
Bunker does the same thing. Front Paws on the backseat of the SUV and turns to llok at me aas if to say" Well Help me up" I look like an idoit. The dog weight 1.5 pounds more than me and here I am lifting her up in to the truck. My Parents and their nieghbors laugh their butts off when she does this. Sometimes she get in on her own though. She refuses to sit in the front seat in my truck but in the convertible she stand on the console and does the "KING OF THE WORLD" routine. |
Sam loves to ride in my car, she has her own a/c vents and she sits right in front of 'em! |

where do you learn sign language for dogs? how many words does Gucci George know? |
Help! My new wonderful puppy Bogart gets car sick- any recomendations? He rode 3 1/2 hours home from the breeder and selpt most of the way- so he was fine. Since then just a few jaunts and he has been fine- but I can't get him to sit in the harness w/o doing sheepie freak out! So- he sits in the back seat of my SUV and looks out the window. I think the looking is what makes him sick. We were on our way to puppy kindergarten tonight and blah- he puked all over my back seat- yikes! On the way home he rode in the feet area of the passenger side of the front. He layed down there and enjoyed the a/c. He is not going to fit there for long and I don't think that is safe.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

We've brought out his favorite treats, toys, nothing coaxes him in. Any suggestions? Chris |
At almost a year old, I'm still giving Clyde a boost to get in the car. Although it looks ridiculous, he at least gets most of his body up there so it's not much weight to hoist up-- unless he's all worn out and doesn't want to help.
I can't believe the things I do for this dog... |
You could try getting all excited about going for a car ride, and take a few extra short trips to do only something entirely pleasant for him. Even a trip for a treat and back. |
same as butterscotch - london falls right asleep.. not sure if he's actually sleeping or is it part of motion sickness? |
Thanks all for the info- I will try the suggestions and let you know how things go. |
I've already PM an answer to the question on car sickness....anyway, an OES owner in California swears by gingersnaps or candied ginger for the dogs before car trips. Yes, the dogs will eat them. If not, healthfood stores may have dried ginger in capsules.
sheepieboss |
Thank you all! I tried the ginger snaps, enforced him wearing his travel harness and sit with him in the back seat for a few mins to give him comfort before we take off and it works! He is still not found of the car, but is getting better and doesn't throw up. So- thanks so much!!! |
yippiee!! glad it worked! Understand the ginger also works for uprights.
