Lunging at cars!

What possesses a dog after 6 years to start lunging at cars. Thank god it isn't every car. But everyone once and awhile Laika will lunge towards a car! Of course Langley watches everything she does and starts to think should I be doing this? So when another car goes by he watches it watches her to see. And when I made her sit and be good. He starts biting her like he is helping me... UG!

I'd say it's d/t your move. She was comfy and in a much less populated area.
Change alone could trigger it...but she also has the extra stimuli of the busier environment. I bet she feels the need to "get rid" of those cars...and it works...as they drive away!

She's going to need some focus training to learn it's positive to ignore them, and some time too - hope she can desensitize herself.
Thanks. If only it wasn't so random. Probably someone looked at her wrong in the car :twitch:

We always walk these roads especially at lunch for her whole life. I always took the dogs into town to walk because of so many loose dogs where I lived. Which I come to realize it isn't just the country :(

It is really random too. I will have to keep my eye on her see what triggers it. Thanks for the help. Hopefully it won't be to hard to fix. The older she gets the worse she gets with stuff.
Simon's a lunger too. And just like yours its not every car. Catches me off guard when he does it, which I correct each and every time.

I wish I could help...if you figure out how to fix it, let me know.

What do you do exactly to correct it? Yeah catches me off guard too! 8O

So we walked to work this morning like yesterday when she lunged. Guess what! Langley did it this time. Soon an he stopped he swung his head around to look at her like "did I do good?"
What works for us is to take treats along on our walk and get the dog to focus on that. When a car approaches, lift a treat up to your face and say something to get the dog's attention like "Look at me". Have the dog continue focusing until the car passes, give the treat and praise for not lunging. It takes awhile but it does work.
Awesome I am on the right track! That is what I have been doing. Thanks!!!!
I second Nita's suggestion, as it has worked for us as well.

Oscar is TERRIBLE with cars, or anything else that moves. I started out by trying to see a car before he did, to stop the progression of his response. When I spotted one, I would take him up on the grass (no sidewalks in our neighborhood, so we walk in the street), and put him in a sit-stay, keeping his focus on me and the nummy treat. When the car passed, he would get his treat.

After a couple of weeks, Oscar would see a car, walk up on the grass and sit patiently, waiting for his treat. 8O :yay: To this day, he still does it. We do run into trouble every now and again when there is a ton of traffic, or it is especially windy and EVERYTHING is moving, but most days our walk is quite peaceful and pleasant.

poor guy windy and everything moving :(

It is so weird she turned 6 and now she pulls this! I noticed it is the cars coming from the other way that grabs her attention. My road from work to home is a busy one. Of course anything she does the boy thinks he should so now has also started! oh my gawd! I just want to have a nice walk. Years of goodness. Now bad! BAD!

I am going to take them out separately tonight do some training.
I think taking them out separately is a great idea. Too difficult to correct her behavior if he's watching and decides to "participate" too.

It is odd that this behavior has cropped up now, when she is six. Maybe something startled her recently. It's so hard to see into their tiny little brains! :D
