Our family loves OES and plan to get a puppy from a breeder. However, my son is allergic to dog. I have read lots of articles on this subject. Some say that oes is hypoallergenicergic and only shed when it is groomed while others say it will cause allergy. I assume that you guys are experts on this subject and will really appreciate some of your advice. Thanks and look forward to hearing from you, Tony |

No dog is hypoallergenic. My oes doesnt shed normally but her coat also picks up everything from outside But (and its a big butt) she has allergies and when her allergies flare up, she pulls her coat out. |
no dogs are truly Hypoallergenic; its a myth. Its true that some people have less allergic reactions to some breeds than others. If a person is allergic to dog fur, a dog with hair instead of fur can be a dog they are less allergic to. But there are no guarantees. You may want to take your son to meet an OES before you adopt one, to see if he has an allergic reaction. |
My nephew is allergic to dogs. He isn't allergic to his Havanese but he is allergic to our sheepie. I'm allergic to dogs but I don't have problems with sheepdogs or other "nonshedding" dogs. I use that word lightly because sheepdogs do lose their hair at various times and they pick up a lot of nature in their coats and bring that in the house as well. I also keep ours in a puppy cut and when I do a good brushing session, I sometimes react with sneezing and itchy eyes. I also get allergy shots and take medication. I think the best thing would be to visit a house with one before making that decision. |
Thank you for your reply. I am still reading more and we can have some chat. I will probably check with vets and my family doctor, or allergist and see what their opinions are. We were told that the kid may develop resistance to allergy if the puppy grows with the kids together. My son has bad allergy to cat, but he is never allergic to our cat. I am allergic to cat as well, but I seem doing okay with him. |
OESD don't have hair as shuch but its made of wool. I think you whould have less issues with a oesd than a normal dog |
I would strongly suggest that you and your family including the allergic son spend some extended time with your breeders dogs prior to committing to buying a pup. It would just be horrible for everyone concerned, including the poor puppy, if you were unable to keep the dog due to allergies.. Shellie |
Thank you for your feedback. I think I need to spend with breeders' dogs for some time and see how he reacts to them. Tony |
My nephew's wife is allergic to our two. She only comes over here for Christmas and spends 2-3 hrs here and walks out very congested and sneezing like crazy. |
My daughter is allergic to my OES and was raised with them. She had asthma as a child and tolerated them but as she got older and lived away from them, became more sensitive to them. Their saliva gives her hives but she can now tolerate them for short periods of time. She has a little Shih Tzu and although she does take medication every day, tolerates him without reaction. Good thing because she LOVES him and couldn't part with him. It is the dander that causes the allergic reaction. |
Hi, Sandy, Can I call you if possible? I can be reached at 647-298-7927. Your daughter's situation is very similar to my son's. Thanks a lot, Tony |
