What's in a name

Our breeder suggested Baxter sounds too similar to Dexter and may confuse the dogs. We tested it with Dexter and she was absolutely correct.

We also tested a number of other names then had a family vote. Our new puppy will be Winston. The breeder said he (Winston) has a cousin with the same name but they will never meet so it's all right.

He arrives on April 21!!!

Hello.

When I first laid eyes on my doggie, the name 'just came to me'. As in 'I shall call him Tristan'. It is an ancient name from Wales, meaning most loyal.

Also, the German opera Tristan and Isolde. Only my Veterinarian has commented on the connection there.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. (to quote the bard). And Winston seems to me to be a good name for an OES.

My OES Violet came from a rescue with her name, just a slight different spelling. When I adoped my two Aussies China and Asis....I didn't know what to name China, but I helped deliver her so I had 8 weeks to think about it and all I thought was how her beaugitul white face and blue eyes reminded me of fine china. when I rescured asia and adopted her she came to me as sparkles...so I knew I was going to change her name and it took me about a week. The name Asia kept coming up with her beautiful black straight hair and chocolate eyes...her name fits her perfectly and she had no problem dropping the other name.

Winston is a cute name.
Winston is a very cute name. I think there are few Winston's on the forum so he will be in good company.
We like Winston for an OES even if it isn't real original. Part of the reason to give his call name already is to try to connect it with his registration name. Since we will use his call name we wanted to start with it rather than the other way. Now the breeder has to try to come up something that fits Winston that we will also like.
(Kennel Name) Up in Smoke....??

Although it doesn't have to match/be part of it, it is kind of fun.
Chewie's really isn't part of his own registered name, but it is related to his sire (Ch Shaggy Bears Skywalker, and his call name is Luke  )

One of my favorites was a National Field CH Brittany (the breed I grew up with). His name was " It's The Real Thing" and his call name was Coke! This was back in the 70's....and that was the advertising slogan at the time.

And if you know your movie history, Bond's make sense - Masquerade Madness Moonraker. 8)
That is a great idea. The litter will be theme named, she hasn't picked the theme yet but we will have some say in Winston's full name.

I also like (Kennel) Sober Morning but it may be a little too obscure for some people to get. ("..........in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.")

I chose the name George for my boy and my breeder told me that his brother had already been named George!! Named him that anyway and coincidentally that's the pup who lives very near to me, so we're going to meet up soon, it'll be very confusing all round I think!

Well, it doesn't have to really match. I have 2 who's registered names were from songs & their call name was part of it. A 3rd my son named & then there was Isaac. Jim's very favorite all time song was Duke of Earl. Breeder frowned on it because she was afraid we would call him Duke or Earl. I promised her we wouldn't. Took me a couple of days but we decided on Isaac. No connection there in anyway shape or form.

LOL Mom named our first OES Duke (after John Wayne). I must admit it suited him and I often think about him as I grew up with him.

Strangely enough in the early eighties two sisters who I used to be in junior handling with named their dog Pepsi - it really suited her. They are currently showing a boy at the moment who is called Hatton - again this really suits him.

I often find that the kennel names have no relation to their pet names. Both Esher, Cloud and Lincoln have the words Moon somewhere in the kennel name.
Mom and I have always tried not to have common names especially when in the show ring and the last thing everyone wants is for 10 dogs to turn around because we've said the name Daisy.

Gus seems a very popular pet name in the ring for the guys. Girls currently is Grace or Georgi.

Lincoln and Esher are named after city's/towns in England - we also had a Chester.
There's an OES on this board with the name Pepsi.
Just gotta go with what's good for you :)

People look at me funny when I say Kenny and I really dont think our breeder liked it...she was kinda disapproving but I didn't care. It's what I want to call my dog and i've always wanted a OES named Kenny :)

What's wrong with Kenny? Seems normal enough for me.

Oh yes....I can relate.
Co-breeder of Chewie names all her dogs after designers. "Chewie" did NOT fit that mold by any stretch of the imagination. Possible saving grace is he is named after his sire (Skywalker, call name Luke), so at least it isn't just me.
I guess because it's a human name haha?
Our first OES came with the name Beth. Didn't thrill our cousin who named her daughter Beth about the same time.

Next was Rodney, same name as our oldest son's college roommate.

Dexter had his name for years, he was stuck and it would fit no matter what.

We like Winston but so far haven't come up with a shorter nickname. My wife tried out Winny but even Dexter rejected it. He has several potentials but few I could print here or repeat in front of my grandkids.

We still test Baxter once in a while; Dex responds and Winston ignores it though Winston also ignores Winston.

Still haven't come up with his registered name. We like one that takes part of both his parents' names but the breeder is leaning toward a "sky" theme since his dad is from Montana.
