Math question. Accountants? Math geniuses?

Don't be afraid of this question. I know I learned this in 8th grade, but that was a loooong time ago.

15% of what number is 50,000? In other words, what formula do I use to figure the base (original number) when I know the rate (15%) and the percentage (50,000)?

.15x=50,000
So I divide 50,000 by .15?
Yes
That's great if I have a calculator, but I can't divide by fractions in my head; I don't need to do it often and I get lost with the decimal place.

I divide by the percentage base (in this case 15) then multiply by 100.

So 50,000 / 15 is 3,333.33
3,333.33 * 100 = 333,333.33

This method allows me to mentally double check my math for saneness -- "OK," I say to myself, "3,300 * 10 is 33,000 plus half is close to 50,000, so I've got that right"

Again, if I have a calculator it's easier! :D
ron,
agreed, although i divided 100 by 15= 6.6666
then multiplied 6.6666 x 50,000
but, not everyone does these in their head. and the older i get, the more i wanna grab a calculator. 8)
I never excelled in math and I am worse now, even with a calculator I can get lost. I am fine with recipes and that's as far as it goes. If I did have to do it I'd go about it thru the back door someway, works for me.
I feel your pain. I am taking Algebra and I really am struggling. I can do all the homework but put a test in front of me and I forget how to do most of it. GRRRRR
And this is why I married an accountant! If I needed to know this, I'd just yell to the next room to Jen and she'd be all over it. And then need to know why I asked... Fearing I was planning on buying the next project car...

I didn't scroll down to see if someone got the answer but simply said, "Hey Kaj, what is .......?

Without looking up and not using a calculator he immediately told me the answer.

Hmmm, they say you look for something in a partner that you yourself lack........I lack mathskills and he blows me away with his math abilities but then he does game programming and it's kinda like binery code stuff. He loves it and I'd be bored to tears doing that job daily.

Guest- I'm impressed! You definately have a logical mind!
The real question is: what is the formula? I was using the numbers as an example. I've been faced with the question before but couldn't figure out the formula.
You know 50,000 is 15%

1% is 50,000 divided by 15

so 1% is 3,333.33

Amount over number of % points , x 100 (number/% x 100)

>>puffs out chest..acts smart :twitch:
Formula is

rate(.15) multiplied by base (unknown) = percentage (50,000)

Jenn and Millie
The formula is
PercentageAmount / Rate = BaseAmount (Remember, the rate is in "per cent" or per 100, so it is already divided by 100 (15% = .15) )
P/R=B

So for your example:
50,000 / (15/100) = 333,333.33333...
or simplified
50,000 / .15 = 333,333,33333...

(To get such a value in the first place, you would have multiplied the BaseAmount by the Rate:
BaseAmount * Rate = PercentageAmount
B*R=P

If you were trying to find 15 percent of 333,333.333333...
333,333.3333... * .15 = 50,000

If you knew the two amounts but needed to find the rate:
P/B=R

What percentage of 333,333.3333.... is 50,000?
50,000/333,333.33333... = .15
