The first time was yesterday morning, about an hour after he ate. Looked like all his breakfast came up. Didn't look much different than it did in the bowl before he ate the food. I cleaned that up and didn't feed him again till the evening, which was fine. I noticed in between breakfast & dinner he was eating grass when outside. I fed him this morning without incident. But then again just now. I fed him around 6PM tonight and he vomited around 7:30-7:45 PM. Again, it looked like the whole meal and not really digested. He ended up re-eating it and so far it's stayed down. He's pooping & peeing normally. His level of activity doesn't seem any different. Gums are pink and return right back to pink after pushing on them. Stomach is not expanded or distended and no tenderness. There's been no retching. He HAS been just a bit gassy the past 48 hours. When he vomited yesterday morning, there was no indication it was going to happen. Just a short "blechh" and his food was sitting on the floor. I didn't actually see him vomit tonight. I just saw him re-eating it. He keeps begging for biscuits and treats. He's eating his meals OK. Not drinking any more or any less than normal. No signs of distress. What do you think? |

I know that my girls have started eating grass roots and, of course, the sticks are no longer buried by snow so they eat those when they get the chance. Trips to the dog park have become an hour or two of me saying 'leave it!!'. |
I can hear his gut making noises. They're loud enough to hear with both of us lying in bed. Do the sounds mean anything? |
I just got home and am reading... The loud sounds are called hyperactive bowel sounds - if they are louder and more frequent than normal. It is an abnormality, but not always overly serious. It is a sign that something in the digestive track is upset - or even just gassy. I hope Brick is feeling better now. |
I think he's OK but I'm worried. He's lying down on the bed, on his side, and seems to be relatively comfortable. I'm really afraid that it might be bloat. But I've never seen it before and his symptoms (from my earlier posts) don't seem to match those of bloat. Or it may be an obstruction. I've been lying in bed since 10:00 not really able to sleep. Don't know if I should bring him to the ER now or my vet in the morning. |
I am always worrying about bloat so I know how you feel. Was it a new bag of food? Could it have spoiled? If he's eating treats, drinking and pooping, I would wonder if the food is off. I think dogs tend to pant, drool and be restless when they are experiencing bloat. |
His food is not too old. No more than a month & a half. And I keep it in a sealed container. At about 10:15 last night, I gave him 2 PhaZymes (simethicone, each gel cap 180mg). The loud gurgling started about 11:30 and seemed to end around 12:30-1 AM. He seemed to be quiet & comfortable the rest of the night. And he seemed to want to eat this morning (but I didn't feed him, in case the vet needs him on an empty stomach). I'm going to drop him off at my vet on the way to work this morning, just to make sure nothing is wrong. |
Hope Brick is okay, nothing serious. Keep us posted |
Just got back from the vet. She's ruled out bloat and an obstruction, which are the things I most worried about. They did a CPL Pancreatic Specific Lipase Snap test, which was negative, which is good. Also, a CBC/Chem/T4 SA120 blood test. Won't know the results of that till tomorrow. So her differential diagnosis is gastroenteritis. I'm to give him 1 Cerenia tab (anti-vomit med) once a day for the next 4 days and 1 Flagyl (antibiotic) tab 3 times a day for the next 5 days. Also a smaller, blander diet for the next few days. Now we see how he does the next few days. |
I hope Brick feels better soon! |
Well good news they ruled out the bad things. I hope Brick feels better soon! |
I failed to mention in my earlier posts that I saw the remnants of what looked like a black walnut shell on the porch Sat. night. Brick didn't eat much of it (if any at all), but it was broken into smaller pieces. My vet says that walnut shells can be upsetting to a dog's stomach. She's thinking it's the walnut shell he may have chewed on. The internet says that the black walnut shells can be toxic to a dog (and horses). And the shell halves I've found in the yard resemble a black walnut shell and NOT the more familiar English walnut shell (the kind bought in a grocery store). I'll start a new thread about black walnut shells. |
Hope that Brick is on the mend! Glad its nothing serious, bloat and obstruction are such a worry here too. Charm is eating mowed grass clods when we walk and I'm not watching her each second. So far, no problems, but I may have to mow her soon. Get well, Brick |
So glad all the really bad things were ruled out. Hope you feel better soon Brick! |
How is Brick today? Laurie and Oscar |
Oscar's Mom wrote: How is Brick today? Laurie and Oscar I was just looking for an update too. Hope things are well with Brick. |
He seems to be doing better. He's on Celenia (anti-vomit) and flagyl (antibiotic) I'm feeding him chicken & rice; around a cup twice daily. He scarfs it right down. No vomiting since Monday evening and his poops still look good. I'm trying to keep him quiet (he's lying down next to me right now ) I think he'll be OK. I just want him to relax for a few days. |
Good to hear that he is on the mend. It is so awful when they are sick. |
Glad to hear Brick is doing better- |
No more tummy troubles, Brick! That's an order!!! Laurie and Oscar |
Glad to hear Brick is feeling better. |
