I just found quite a few black spots on Biscuit's tail next to her bum. Seems like hair has came off too. Any idea what happened to get skin and what can I do to get rid of them. Thanks Regards Johnson. |

I can picture that, skin gets "leathery, but don't know the cause. Any licking, chewing? |
Yes a bit chewing and licking. Will post a pic later. Thanks |
It sounds like what they call "Stud Tail" Info on it. Stud Tail (Supracaudal Gland Infection) There is a sebaceous gland near the base of the tail in both dogs and cats that sometimes becomes over-active and/or infected. In cats, this condition is called "stud tail" even though the problem sometimes occurs in females and castrated males. In dogs, the same condition is usually just called by it's medical name: Supracaudal Gland Infection or Supracaudal Gland Hyperplasia. If no underlying problems (typically fleas) are found, then treatment consists mostly of cleaning with degreasing shampoos and possibly short term steroids and antibiotic therapy. In dogs, every once in a while, surgical reduction or removal of the gland is needed. In cats, castration often helps." Also if you suspect this might be the problem in stead of washing the area twice a day, get an astringent "Witch Hazel" and dab onto the area twice a day to help the de-grease the area. If the black spots look like human skin black heads, little dots blocking the pores and the loss of hair in that specific area, my guess is "Stud Tail" which can be firstly treated with an astringent like witch hazel or an anti-dandruff - de-greasing shampoo done twice a day. If no better after a few weeks or more then off to the vets as might need a short term steriod-antibiotic treatment to settle the gland down. Make sure also flea treatment is up to date. Dont you just love it, previously sheepies when docked we did not have to worry about that part of the anatomy, one of my girls has this problem and I got it under controll quite easily, like a teenage acne and hormones play a part in causing this as well. I noticed on her a bald spot on her tail with black dots on the skin about the same spot you described. The bald spot grew back after getting it under controll. |
