| From what you've described, you've got more that just barking... there's also jumping and biting. Have you tried just a regular collar first to prevent the behavior from getting to this point? How about just letting her drag a leash so you can make a quick correction and redirect to a toy or more appropriate instead? I personally don't care for electric collars if that's what you mean by a bark collar. I have tried citronella and they work some but redirecting I've found is best. I have a notorious barker... straight out the back door she'll bark her head off as she runs around. But if I stuff a tennis ball or other toy in her mouth as she's heading out, she's focusing on play instead.  They need to learn limits and this is just the way I do it... Brief timeouts and at the very moment the behavior starts... maybe just 3 minutes then back into the situation that brought about the inappropriate behavior so they can try again. Yes, it can be exhausting and you have to adopt a zero tolerance policy. I've had to be more persistent than the dog but it does eventually sink in. |
| I had to use one years ago while keeping my brothers dog. He was a country dog and I was keeping him while my brother was out of the US. I hated putting it on him, but the HOA told me I had to because he barked while I was gone to work. It worked for the barking. If possible I would say use it as a last resort. I agree with the poster above it will only address the barking issue. |
| I'm a huge fan of citronella bark collars. I've had great success with various breeds EXCEPT the sheepdog. She barks right through it, doesn't care. Her barking (which is usually a temper tantrum over not being able to go with us in the car) is so rapid, the collar can't keep up. Also, she has figured out how to blast her pack members in the face with the spray by turning her head and barking while standing next to them. This REALLY freaks them out since they have all been trained with the collar and hate that lemony fresh smell. Meanwhile, the sheepdog remains completely oblivious. She is a strict practitioner of the "mind over matter" method or as she calls it, "I'm going to get my way or drive you crazy until I do!" Good luck! |

I am sorry, I know that I shouldn't smile at this, but you painted such a perfect picture of a sheepie girl with a big personality who wants what she wants and she wants it now that I just can't help smiling a teeny tiny bit. |
| Mine barked right through it too and wasn't too bright about where it came from. She's stop barking so it kinda did work but she'd bark again b/c she wanted to know where it came from. It just made her hair all wet and half the time it didn't go off b/c of all her hair. |
