I play and coach flat track roller derby. Last year, my kids, and some friends kids begged me to start a junior roller derby league, for kids under 18. I thought about it, and my husband I decided that yes, it's something we want to do. We started with 10 kids on skates. Today, a year later, we have 45 kids, a travel team, and are playing freaking nationally. It's insane. (but I love it) But what's REALLY insane is the amount of fundraising we have to do to afford to travel with the kids. The parents are already shelling out $$$ for this sport - Gear alone is at least $250 at its very very cheapest. And kids grow. So it's not a one time thing for them. Travel can cost upwards of $300 per kid depending on where we're playing and for how long. So of course, we fundraise our BUTTS off. We do a skate-a-thon, where the kids get pledges for the number of laps they can skate, we do the obligatory car washes, and all the other "standard" fundraising. The Tucson junior league told me they do a "dog wash". They get bands, they get together with the humane society who offers low price vax's at the event, and the kids wash a ton of dogs. They charge like $10 per dog, $15 for two. I think this sounds like a SUPER SUPER fun idea. My fellow board members however, are not convinced. They think it'll be too much work, they think that the kids could get bitten, there's a whole slew of "what if's". I wanted to ask the only people I know who are as nuts about dogs as I am - what you think of the idea. Would you let your kids do it? Would you take your dog? Do you have any suggestions for making it easier/safer/more fun/better for the community? What do you think? |

our high school band thought about a dog wash fundraiser idea too, but because of risk of a kid getting bit it was squashed. They do car washes. Not as much fun but they raise pretty good money. I think the thought was, the kids like to play around a lot at these things and all the excitment and kids spraying each other with water and throwing soap on each other and the screeming and laughing that all goes with it, they thought the dogs might get to excited and maybe nervous dogs may get scared to the point that someone may get bit. |
Like Kristin said - I think it would not work well. It's a good idea, but the liability part would be too high of a risk for me. But - I had commented on your intro page, not sure if you saw it....my daughter LeAnne went to college with a girl who did flat track roller derby (I find humor in some one going to school for OT, and doing derby!!) We got sucked in and go to bouts. The team here is the MN RollerGirls... and they have a JR league too! So her daughter (my granddaughter) just joined and they are going to be the pre-bout entertainment this Saturday! http://www.mnrollergirls.com/index.php/ ... bout-seven I hope to make it up for it, but it's looking doubtful, especially as I work at 7am Sunday |
I didn't see it! But I'll go look The MN Rollergirls are awesome - and their junior league is way cool too. We haven't played them yet, but I suspect a lot of them will be going to JuniorCon in Austin this year, and we'll meet them there. I have had broken bones, torn up my knees, torn up my shoulders, banged my head and my tailbone - all for the love of this crazy crazy sport. If you can go see those kids (and women) play on Saturday, I urge you to please please go. You will be inspired by the sheer athleticism of everyone involved. (says the girl who can barely walk this morning, because I busted my tailbone AGAIN last night, and I think I pulled a quad.) As for the dog wash - you guys are probably right. Poo. I just love the idea and it sounds SO fun. And while I do have a huge liability policy on the kids, it covers skating - not dog bites. Roz |
cool!!! Lots of the rescues here do dog washes to raise money and a lot of kids do the washing. I think it's usually a fun event, but not terribly lucrative. It's better for gaining volunteers and getting the word out about specific dogs in my opinion. |

I even posted some photos on your intro page....check it out! And my dad was a youth hockey coach, but sadly it was before girls could play. My sisters and I were always frustrated with those dumb boys - we could skate and stick handle and check WAY better! |
