Tack Box

We are pretty comitted to showing; Dexter had his first show this weekend and our next OES will arrive April 21 or 28 and is a show dog (puppy). Our "diddy bag" has grown to 2 and makes things very hard to find.

We checked out what others had and haven't come to a conclusion. I see prices from $49.99 to several hundred $ on line.

Cindy's was the one we liked about the best this weekend, I think it was a Metro?

What do you use for a tack box?

Mine's old and a D-Flite. We had a discussion on this a year or 2 ago - I have some photos...digging....

It's really heavy, but very solid. I tote it in on my dolly cart at shows, so it's not really an issue.

It also makes a good seat for snack time!

Many have really good luck with tool chests - the ones on wheels with a handle (like rollable luggage) seem to work well.
I have a D-Flite. I originally had the large size. My kids bought it for me for Christmas once I stareted showing dogs. But it was too heavy & too big for me to handle. Someone wanted to buy it so I sold it for a really great price (for me), after checking with the kids 1st, & bought myself the regular size. If you are orgainzed, you will be amazed how much you can fit into it. A bit pricey but very sturdy & it should last you your entire show career (many, many ,many dogsworth :D ).
This is what I have started out with. I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the money on the big metal ones or even luge it around. So far I'm very happy with it and it holds a lot of stuff. I have the purple one as thats my favorite color! :D

I think about the d filter tack boxes every once in a while, but it seems heavy, small and I'm such a klutz, I know I'll have bruises from carrying it. But occassionally I look at one.

I'm an overpacker. I travelled professionally for a decade and learned I prefer to be over-prepared. It's always two cans of hairspray in case one quits working (which happened) and multiple leads in case one breaks. Lots of spray bottles full of potions. Emergency items in the event of a disaster. I always travel with two sets of boots after one show where it rained the whole time and we couldn't dry our boots fast enough. Anyway, you get the idea. So the aluminum boxes are too limited for me.

I used this one for a while: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202018014/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=Tool+bags&storeId=10051

But I've moved up to one more like this: http://www.harborfreight.com/20-inch-rollaway-tool-bag-with-15-inch-carry-bag-92328.html because I found with the smaller bags, I still carried another bag. With these two bags, I'm hoping it will work better. They have lots of interior and exterior pockets which helps organize scissors, brushes, combs, rakes, etc. and then the interior holds all the potions, boots, leads, collars, bait etc.. We'll see.

I still carry a ringside bag for spray, brushes, poop bags, a couple of bottles of water, my wallet for the walk back to shop and my phone. And all of it fits in the new bag.

With two dogs, you won't need twice as many things, but you'll need more! Good luck!
All that goes into my tack box is the cans, bottles & containers for grooming along with combs, brushes, scissors, leads, collars etc. Boots & towels, lint rollers, grooming smocks & show shoes & other things that aren't breakable or spillable go along in gym bags. I always carry at least 4 sets of boots. Sometimes more depending on if I am taking more than 1 dog to the show. I am short so I like to have a front view of what I need to grab out of the tackbox as it sits on top of my small table that sits next to the grooming table or on top of a crate. I don't like to be rooting around from the top to find something. But that's just my personal preference.
I found mine at a home depot. Actually - co-breeder found it for me. It's something like this http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R ... reId=10051 (I got mine almost ten years ago so they don't make that exact model anymore) She saw it on sale for less than $50 and thought it would work for me and she was right. It has enough room I can fit my dryer and just about everything else in there, it's lightweight and the wheels mean I never have to carry it.

She later found a (still pretty lightweight, also with wheels) tool box in a similar style in metal for herself. Now sure where she found that one, I'm not seeing anything like it at Home Depot right now. She's used the traditional metal dog grooming tack boxes for years and got tired of lugging them around.

Oh, wow - Amazon has some nice, inexpensive options:

http://www.amazon.com/Trademark-75-3042 ... im_sbs_t_8

http://www.amazon.com/Lanard-Workman-De ... B000UMM4QQ

This is closer to what Marnie has: http://www.amazon.com/ToolUSA-SS-TOOL-B ... m_sbs_t_12

Or search for rolling tool boxes, for those of you who like the wheels option.

Just some ideas.

Kristine your killin' me. Those are nice! :excited:

I went to the soft sides because they have so many inside and outside pockets that fit brushes and scissors perfectly...but now ... Hmmmmm. :bulb:

Marilyn and Kristine, how do you stow your scissors? I've never found a nice case that will hold my 10" shears. Any suggestions?

Don't know what to tell you on the scissor case. The vedor I buy my scissors from gave me a really nice leather case that holds 4 pairs of scissors, folds over & also has a zippered pocket for things like small scissors or ear plucking stuff. .It fits perfectly on top of my cans & bottles in the main compartment of my box.
I've seen the sleeves like a set of wrenches come in - with the slots for each to slide into.

I have the protective carriers each of mine came with, and they fit in the top compartment of my D-Flite box.
Thanks Marilyn and Dawn.

Dawn, that's what I'm looking for, in leather and large enough to accommodate a 10" pair of shears that actually measure out to 11"! 8O

Thanks again!

The next time you go to a show, stop at a sharpening or scissor vendor. They should have something suitable that you can purchase individually without purchasing scissors.
Thanks Marilyn.

I'll give it another try!

We start our spring shows next week. A four day show followed by a two day show the following weekend, after more than 6 months off! Should be fun AND painful! The joys of dog shows!
It's kind of fun to go to a show and hit the vendors...knowing there is actually something you really need! ;)
Lol, yeah, that's a good one! Yup that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!! :yay:

Actually, I've been shopping this case for years. I'm guessing I'm going to have to have one made. There is a guy with Labs (I think) that used to make them. In the meantime....shoppppppppppppppping! :excited:

Thanks again!
