Pet Insurance?

So, maybe because I've been reading so much on the forum about dogs with this problem or that, I feel like I should probably invest in pet insurance for the new puppy. I have a flyer I picked up at the vets office yesterday when I took the cats in, for Purina Care. I don't have any costs or anything on that yet, but I thought before I got too into researching the various companies, I would get some recommendations from you guys.

Do you use pet insurance? Is it worth it? Who do you go through? What should I expect it to run me?

Edited to add: I just went through the quote thing on Purina Care - for the PurinaCare with Preventive Care, it's about $35.00 a month. Could be worse? It wasn't too much cheaper without the preventative care, and I figure why the hell not, right?

We use VPI, http://www.petinsurance.com/ at a cost of like $49 a month for both Sheepies. Thankfully, we haven't had to really use it but it's there when we do need it.

The Purina policy appears to be a very nice policy. If I understand it right, the annual limit is high at $20,000 but there is no lifetime limit and hereditary conditions are covered. :D Nothing preexisting of course. I think the premium is reasonable too.

I prefer policies that don't have set limits per condition/system/incident... I have a few policies like that but they were taken out 7 years ago and that was the best I could find available at that time. One dog maxed out for one condition at $3,000 worth of care but I still carry the policy because other coverage is still available.

I also have Embrace Pet Insurance http://www.embracepetinsurance.com and I can say that it's been wonderful. I took it out about 3 1/2 years ago on a new puppy too. I thought I'd start with higher coverage and drop back once I knew he wasn't affected with hip dysplasia. That was my main concern. :| Skin issues started at just over a year of age and he required major surgery last fall for a rare medical condition. He's required over $15,000 worth of medical care.

I want the option to pursue medical care should something happen... not everyone does and not everyone has the time it requires for after or continued care. I understand and can appreciate it because the care required can be exhausting and disruptive to normal life. For me, there was no option... I wanted my dog to be normal and I'd do whatever it took. When all was said and done, his chylothorax surgery and after care came to just over $9,300... Embrace Pet Insurance reimbursed $7,446.45... exactly 80%. It's been a wonderful investment for one dog, a waste of money for another who's been quite healthy... but I'll continue to waste that money just in case.

We just don't know if the puppy we purchased is going to be healthy no matter how well bred they are... and accidents too can happen.

Just my opinion having been through this recent medical crisis...
I use pet assure and luckily my vet takes it! It's a yearly fee and I think for my 2 dogs it's $89. It takes 25% off every vet bill including medicine. If you're interested I'll send you a coupon code.
We decided against it but started a "Kenny" fund to use if something happens. We decided to just take $30 or so a month and put it aside.....if we use it, than glad we did it...if not, free money down the road :)
