HeatherRWM wrote: I just saw this on someone's facebook. It's an "all natural" heartworm treatment that works slowly so the dog does not need to be confined/limited in activity. I have zero experience with it, but it may be worth checking out! http://www.ambertech.com/products/hwf-t ... free.html/ Thanks for this Heather. I read through the literature, read the testimonials, good and bad (most good, 1 bad)...and I wish this would be an easy choice for me. I am a firm believer in staying with "natural", "closer to nature" in most things as I saw with my own health what a miraculous difference it can make letting our own immune system do it's job... if there were more information on the web regarding this product, I would probably give it a try... But it sure is good to know this is out there, "in case"!! |
You are amazing! I am following this story everyday. Dont have any advice to offer, except the thunder shirt worked for Gigi the first time, then never again. Hope it works for MM. Thanks for all the care and love you are giving him! |

Thanks for all the care and love you are giving him! Thanks Carol Everyday, it gets so much better!!! Our little Muffin and Kilo are fast becoming THE best of buddies. I know MM is not "supposed" to run and play much, but for the first time today, I saw him chasing Kilo around the yard, (Kilo's favorite game) both dogs with big fat grins on their faces! Around and around they'd go, then Muffin would pick up one of Kilo's toys and play with it, inviting Kilo to join in which he always did. First time i have ever seen MM play with a toy. He'd toss it up in the air, catch it and roll over with it so happy! They both started digging in the yard into our 'sand", first Kilo then Muffin side-by-side...then lie in it together. Two very tired and happy dogs are in the office with me now while i am working... one to the left of me and one to the right, both snoring And my fat Sweetie girl is laying on the sofa, her favorite place to be. So life here with my little troop could not be any better, except for Muffin being well. Today and for the next few days, my baby can be a happy go lucky dog...calm and restricted days will be here soon enough. |
this is great news!!! I hope his treatment goes well and he soon will beable to just enjoy life. good job!! |

Oh Ellen! I have got to stop checking this board in my office at work. It's not okay for the Vice Principal to be sobbing (tears of joy) during recess. You go Mr. Muffin! It sounds like he is soooo happy. And here I go again, blubbering. Tracie |
It sounds so good that Kilo and Muffin are getting a long so well..best of buds. I had forgotten about how they like to make beds in the sand. It's been a long time since my girls have done that. It sounds so sweet and Muffin playing with toys, Joy! |

Violet, it made my heart catch in my chest to see him playing with toys... I remember it was just a few days ago I had been sad thinking how he didn't seem to know what to do with a toy or a bone. He LOVES his little bite-size dingos now and if i'm not careful, he would eat that over dinner...and to see him actually "playing" made me choke up. This little guy is like a young puppy, inquisitive, learning...he's just in a big body. Hopefully his hard past will soon be gone from his mind. |
Just an FYI this is the new SAFER HW treatment protocol. I have used it on two fosters and the dog that whelped puppies is now waiting till the 29th of feb to get her injections Just using heartguard might work if there are only small amts of microfilaria an ultrasound will give you the best answer to how advanced the heart worms are. just an FYI Dog diagnosed and verified as heartworm positive. Positive antigen (Ag) test verified with 2nd Ag or microfilaria (MF) test Clinical signs with one positive Ag test and MF test (for status) Begin exercise restriction. The more pronounced the symptoms, the stricter the exercise restriction. If the dog is symptomatic: Stabilize with appropriate therapy and nursing care. Prednisone prescribed at 0.5 mg/kg BID 1st week, 0.5 mg/kg SID 2nd week, 0.5 mg/kg EOD 3rd and 4th week Day 1 Administer heartworm preventive. If microfilariae are present, pretreat with antihistamine and glucocorticosteroid if not already on prednisone to reduce risk of anaphylaxis. Observe for at least 8 hours for signs of reaction. Day 1-28 Doxycycline 10 mg/kg BID for 4 weeks Reduces pathology associated with dead heartworms Disrupts heartworm transmission Day 30 Administer heartworm preventive. Day 60 Administer heartworm preventive. 1st melarsomine injection 2.5 mg/kg intramuscularly (IM) Rx prednisone 0.5 mg/kg BID 1st week, 0.5 mg/kg SID 2nd week, 0.5 mg/kg EOD 3rd and 4th week Decrease activity level even further. When I "shop vets" I am going to take a printed copy of this with me, as well as present this to the vet we're using now. Is there a "NAME" for this particular protocol???? |

I saw thundershirts today in a pet supply store!!! (quess I had never thought to look for them before). They are almost identical (material and weight bareing) used for children with autism that are used sometimes in schools. Some kids do beautifully with them (the majority) and a rare few it doesn't seem to have any change. I could see the same effects and percentages on dogs. Sending love and belly rubs to the furkids. Keep up the fantastic job Ellen and Scott. Marianne |
We got a Thundershirt yesterday (XL) was too big, so I returned it today for a size LG. I haven't tried it yet but will tomorrow... Heartworm question for the board here: I spoke with the mobile vet today who sedated Mr. Muffin for his initial treatment and he said he has been using more and more "Off-label" use of Advantage Multi along with steroids and massive doses of Doxcycline to kill heartworms over about a 6 month period of time... No injections, just using this protocol. He said more and more rescue dogs are being treated this way...?? Now i tried to find this on the internet and could not... It is not the "slow kill" of Heartgard, it is a bit faster, but not as fast as the Immiticide injections. I like the idea of it because Muffin can stay home to be treated, no vet stays and no painful injections. The down side is that it "may" not be as effective...and being that he will not be monitored in a vet setting, only at home with me, does that make it more dangerous to him? As Kathy noted, in Muffin's favor, he is young so hopefully his infestatioon is less. I know his heart is not enlarged (saw the x-ray) and his lungs look pretty clear. His blood work was good (liver, kidneys) and he is not symptomatic except for after exercise fatigue and what "might" be a small sound of his throat clearing (rarely). So, I am asking all of you ... Anybody know anything of this particular method?? I am trying to make a good decision for Muffin and this is a hard one... Thank you!! |
Hi Ellen, How are you doing today? I have no advice regarding an Heartworm treatment but you may get more members checking the medical forum thread if you pose your questions there perhaps. Good luck. Marianne |
Hey thanks for that Marianne In the meanwhile, I am also checking with a local vet and a lady heavily involved in rescues whose name was given to me by the mobile vet on Saturday. They both supposedly have extensive experience in the "Advantage Multi, Doxcycycline, prednisone" protocol. If I don't like anything with that treatment plan, I will be doing the better known Heartgard, Doxcycline protocol. I have pretty much decided against the painful injections. i am going to get another test or two run on his blood to double-check behind the 1st vet as well as let another vet see his chest x-ray just to be doubly sure, but I have 99% made up my mind to go with a slow-kill method, unless they tell me something just earth shattering about his health i don't already know. As I myself learn more, I will post what I am told. Just to update the Muffin Man: He now is the proud owner of a HUGE crate...which he actually likes. Everytime Kilo walks into the room and he is in it, he growls at him lightly as if to say, "This is MY den... you go away." That makes me glad because he is going to be spending a lot of time in there with treatment coming up, whichever one it is, so he needs to like it. I also got him some sturdy ramps so he can walk up into the SUV, which he amazingly did on his own just as I was trying to figure out the best way for him to climb up... I turned around, and there he already was, calm and cool about it as can be! So we practiced it over and over with me just sitting in the back of the SUV and he would walk up the ramp to come inside and give me doggie kisses. (of course the liverwurst helped ) What a great dog. Today we're going to do it again, but this time, I will close the hatch, climb in the front seat and crank the motor. Fingers crossed on that one. I feel sad that he has fallen so well in line with our little family routine here, only to have it drastically changed this week during treatment and for the next God knows how many months. No more playing with Kilo, either in or out of the house, no more dashes outside to go potty with the other dogs, or sleeping in the bedroom with all of us. I will now be sleeping with him on the cot again, keeping him separated from the other dogs 24/7 and putting him back on a leash for potty breaks only. Maybe even a diaper is back in the picture. He has not had even one accident in the house in a long time, so that bums me out too. And his rear leg was building up muscle around the damaged hip I think because he has not limped once in a long time even playing with Kilo. So hopefully we will have long slow walks on the leash that will keep it built up. I advertised for a "pet sitter" yesterday for a few hours each day so i can spend time with my other two dogs, run errands, etc., and not leave him lone for even a minutes. he still has the seperation anxiety and there's no way that will be resolved in time for treatment, so we will just have to accomodate the phobia while he is on the medicine. Yes, it's not a perfect world but he is a perfect dog Heartworms. They affect the whole family. So I just wanted to let everybody know that our baby is THE most tenderly loved dog ever in my little opinion, and all that nonsense about finding him a foster home a week or so ago is totally, forever out the window and i feel almost ashamed I ever thought of caving. I could never leave this little guy who makes my heart melt whenever I just look at him. Talk soon and God bless everyone! |

It's sounds like everything is working out for you and Mr. Muffin. Don't you worry about having those former thoughts - I had them too when Panda arrived. He was such a mess, I also slept on a cot in the Family Room for aprox 3 months so Panda could get used to the indoors. I always second guessed myself and there were times when I thought he'd be happier in another home. I'd always feel horribly guilty for even having those thoughts afterwards. This was usually after fights with Old Blue whom I felt was my first priority and during periods of exhaustion trying to mesh my three together. I mentioned baby gates earlier and while I use them frequently in doorways at my current home - back then, mine were just sitting unattached as I would grab them and use them as barriers when the teeth gnashing was occuring. This went on for months and I really thought they'd be no peace in the household. Old Blue, whom I brought home at age 1 had spent the first year of his life isolated in my neighbors yard. He knew my female dog as I'd ask to bring him on walks with us but he didn't do well playing with others. Merlin was a pup when he arrived and Blue had no problem accepting him. Old Blue was 15 when Panda arrived and set in his ways. When Shaggy passed, it was just Blue and Merlin and ...then Panda arrived and all "ell broke loose. The old guy did not like him at all. He was extremely jealous of the newcomer and at age 15 took up playing with Merlin for the first time in his life and aliged himself with him. Oh sheesh! Old Blue is the one that reminds me of your Sweetie. Anyhow the first year was tough, but eventually they tolerated one another and there finally was peace. Blue passed at age 19 aprox 5 years after Panda's arrival. I swore 2 dogs was enough for me from now on, then just 2 wks later a tiny Pitbull puppy was brought to my home. Egads another male! (Merlin, Panda and Snoop are my current boys) and of course later joined by Gilligan who has now passed. Given the choice I would never have chosen 3/4 males...but circumstances happened and in the grand scheme of things I've never regretted bringing any of them into my home. Yes, I've had moments (such as you do) where I questioned whether they'd be happier elsewhere or questioned my sanity) but overall if I had to do it again I'd give a resounding YES! You're doing a fantastic job and you seem to know intuitively what works and what doesn't and MM is a testiment to what you are doing is right. Keep it up! Marianne You'll probably have to start your routine of socializing them together once MM's treatment is complete if they are separated for a while. But, you probably know that and it does become easier over time. |
Oh Marianne... you are just so wonderfully graphic in your writing skills, I can SEE the gates flying up as the gums go back! Whenever you write your first book, I will buy your first copy!!! I do see what you mean about Old Blue (aka: old Sweetie) being the alike with the same jealousies, suspicions, etc. And you are right... I can also see it working out. Thank you so much! And God bless your little pack and all the ones in your future |
When You think of when you first spotted him and how far he's come...its amazing. How is Sweetie(that is her name, right?) getting along with MM? I knew he and Kilo would be bestest buddies. I'm so sorry that dh(dumb heartworms) have to be dealt with yet. He's got a road to travel yet. Can we see some pictures where he is fuzzy |
Pictures please!!! |
Yes new pics would be great! |
Ellen, thanks for the compliment ! Pam - your fault I spewed coffee over my keyboard with your dh questions! That was too funny! I side with the others...pictures please if you can take time out of your busy schedule! As usual sending belly rubs from me and sloppy kisses from my boys Marianne |
You should be commended for all that you are doing and have done! God Bless! |
Ellen I have been away for a little while, on a vaca.. and kept thinking about MM, and hoping/praying that he was settling in, and giving you glimpses of just how lovely he is going to be and I am so happy to read here all the great reports! So proud of MUffin, and so proud of you and your husband, for sticking through this. All new moms, question their ability to parent, in the haze of sleep deprivation, and all the work.. but then, you just keep falling deeper and deeper in love, just like you are ( we ALL are, with Muffin) It took my standard poodle a while to settle down too, he was a wild, long legged, goofy , high energy toddler, for the first few years... and then he matured into the calmest, sweetest love. So much so, that the night I brought my newborn daughter home from the hospital, he was sooo gentle, and asked if he could get into the bed with us... something he had never EVER done before, he used to just leap in, sometimes even spring boarding, onto me... but from the very first night, that she came home ( and co slept with me) he would very tenderly climb onto bed, sniff her head, and then slowly and carefully curl up, about 3 feet away from her/us and " keep watch" over us. Muffin man, is growing into the truly wonderful boy, that you are allowing him to be. He could not ask for better guardians! and I can't wait to see the new pics! ~wendy |
Thank you for your kind replies! I have tried so many times to sit down and write the past couple of days but i started muffin on his HW treatments and my hands have been full of trying to keep him on a leash at all times, even while inside the house unless we are in a room alone with a closed door. The leash instantly calms him - and Kilo - and it is the ONLY way i can maintain control right now. trying to keep him from not getting excited is a real challenge. I hope as soon as we establish some sort of new 'routine" I will have a bit of time. So just letting you all know so far so good with the Advantage Multi, Prednisone, Doxcycyline protocol. (Which by the way, came highly recommended by the local humane society animal clinic here and a couple of people involved in rescues.) Supposedly negative HW results come in as little as 6 months with this regime. And he did not have any reaction at all during the so-called "critical period" thank goodness. My knees didn't stop shaking the first day. More as I can including pictures! |
This is wonderful! Great news. |
Wooo hoooo! Healing thoughts to you Mr. Muffin. Be a good boy. Tracie |
Happy to hear he is making progress! My post are always sporatic as sometimes weeks go by before I post again due to busy workloads. I just happen to be on Spring Break at the moment. You are doing fantastic and thanks for the update! Marianne |
Very good news. You must be glad that you have now made the decision which treatment to administer and have gotten it started. Mr. Muffin--stay calm! |
Cindy |
How is Mr. Muffin doing with his treatment? |
I am curious to see how MM is doing. |
Hello everybody! Long time no-talk-to Been soooo busy, trying to find a new normal in this... I hope this weekend I will be able to snap off some photos of our little fuzzy guy and upload to photobucket...but rest assured he is doing very good, gaining weight and getting super, duper spoiled rotten!! He is breezing through the treatment so far...probably doing better than I am. (Nervous Nelly Mom) We are having some difficulties with him going potty on a leash but have figured out some temporary work arounds, besides our 50x a day walks! He is resisting being a "kept-man" and just really wants to romp and play again with Kilo but all in all he is taking "quiet" pretty well. This dog is absolutely, by far, the sweetest baby I have ever known. So much personality, so smart! He's definitely one of us now, we all love him and he us. Even he and Sweetie are becoming friends, inch by inch and he is getting used to strangers quickly, learning to trust. More later and thanks for caring! |
YEA SO GLAD TO HEAR ALL IS GOING SO WELL HE IS ONE LUCKY DOG TO HAVE FOUND YOU GOD BLESS |
Oh my! I cannot wait to see pictures. I am so happy for you that Mr. Muffin is adjusting so well. AWESOME! |
So so glad to hear all is going well! Can't wait to see updated pics of he sweet guy! |
what a great update. I am so happy all is going well. |
So happy he found you!!! So happy he is doing so well!!! |
Awesome News! |
great news all around!! Keep up the good work mom!.. |
Yay!!! |
I have so needed to update little by little because there's just so much to tell you guys, my brain (and typing fingers) will no doubt go into overload trying to get it all written down here Everyday something will happen and I find myself saying, "I need to remember to tell the OES forum about this", and then never get a chance to get back here. I think so often about what Wendy wrote about how sweet her rescue doggie was with her newborn baby and my heart just goes out to all the millions of dogs who are brimming with love to give but for the insensitive behavior of others... for shame. My own Muffin has taught me about this very special kind of love... Thank you for sharing your story Wendy. God bless what you and so many others have done, not just for Muffin and I, but for all the many dogs and families you guys have stepped in to save, with time, encouragement, finances and your huge hearts... Bottom line update is that Muffin is trying to settle in as best he can. He knows this is his home and there is no doubt in his mind who mom and dad are - especially mom. He is like a shadow to me. If I leave the room, and he doesn't know exactly where I go, he will begin trotting from room to room until he finds me. And trotting is not really good during his heartworm treatment, so I will call out to him so he can find me quickly when I leave, or tell him I am leaving ahead of time so he can follow. He has just the cutest way of snorting and grunting. When he gets excited, like first thing in the morning when we all get up, he gets really happy when my feet hit the floor. He comes up to me in his ecstatic wiggle way (smacking the other dogs in the face with his strong whip-like tail) and he starts snorting like a little pig, trying to kiss me in the face. So cute. He also tries to keep the other dogs from getting their share of attention by positioning his body firmly between us and them as we give them pats and rubs- not so cute. But eventually he will grow tired of trying of trying to out maneuver us and back off some. Fortunately the other dogs seem to understand we are trying to get to them so no real rivalry exists. Muffin is a junk-foodie fanatic and a veeery picky eater too. He will turn up his nose at steak to eat hot dog BUNS - or turn down hamburger meat in favor of pizza. I am not kidding. We figure his previous owners fed him scraps and ate junk food because he truly prefers that to good food. Getting healthy food into him every day is really a challenge. And he will go hungry before he eats if it's something he does not like - and the high dose of medicine he is on seems to strip his appetite too. I have to keep rotating his food around because one day he will eat hamburger meat (in example) but not chicken...liverwurst but not bologna...and will eat his Organix dog food in the "orange can" but not the "purple can" one day but the next want the purple instead of the orange...or neither and prefer Pedigree...or none of any and just eat dry food...or not. I just go through the foods untl I find one he likes that meal because he NEEDS to eat. I don't want to keep playing musical food with him but i also do not want him to go without food on his stomach because the medicine makes him very apathetic...and I can't stop giving him the medicine. I am afraid if he doesn't eat he may slip beyond wanting food at all, or I would have to stop medicating him and he needs that for the HW treatment...so I am resigned to just do this until it is over. By then, I will have a very spoiled doggie, but at least he will be a very healthy, spoiled doggie He takes 3 pills twice a day (the doxycycline antibiotics) so I always have to find foods I can hide the pills in. (Hence the bologna and liverwurst and the like). But he has really caught on to me doing that. So in order to find the pills, he will thoughtfully roll each bite around in his mouth until the offending pill can be uncovered, then spit the pill out before eating the rest of the bite (or leaving it on the floor). Pill Pockets? No way. Too commercial food-like. White bread soaked in a bit of hamburger meat mixed in with other cooked hamburger worked a few days...then marrow from soup bones sandwiched by dehydrated chicken...last night it was simply a soft hot dog bun that won him over. Yesterday at breakfast it was 4 warm hard boiled eggs. (Warm food is key here too. He does not like cold foods at all. Hubby says that's because 'cold" food doesn't exist in the wild. Which he sadly was for who knows how long...) But he is putting on weight and does not look like the same dog from before. He is even getting a little pot belly It is obvious he doesn't feel well...but when he gets to go out on the leash he smiles and perks up. It is sad to see him so grateful for just snatched moments at being a "normal dog". He loves the neighbors yard with their grass (Kilo digs ours up , so I take him down there where he can roll in it on his back and get sunshine in his face. The immediate neighbors all know him now and he them - he will go up to them for pats, still a little timidly, but he initiates it so that is good - nobody mind him "using" their lawn. They think he's a little miracle dog and like being a part of it all! And they love Kilo and Sweetie so it's all good, yay!! Kilo is rough with him because he wants to play with him of course, so when we are outside on the leash and Muffin indicates he wants some "privacy" in the woods, I will leash up Kilo so he can't chase or upset Muffin, letting Muffin off the leash who will go to the woods for a minute or two. While he's out of sight behind bushes or whatever, I will talk to him so he knows I am nearby waiting for him...then as soon as he (always) comes right back to me, I remove Kilo from the leash, put Muffin back on, both get a little treat, and we continue on our walk... It's quite a circus But for now, it seems to be working. I cannot WAIT for the day Muffin can go outside to romp and play when he wants to, get used to rides in the car and go places. (Heck, I am looking forward to ME being able to take rides in the car again and "go places"!) I have the mobile vet coming next week to just re-test HW as a confirmation... Black Creek never did a 2nd confirmation test and while I don't expect it to be any different, I just want to be certain he needs all this medication. Well, more later, just wanted to give you guys a little update on our progress...I was able to get a couple of pictures on my camera of him up close. He doesn't like his picture taken and my camera is mis-behaving too. I will work on getting you more but I just LOVE his new happy little smile Photobucket: http://i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii5 ... -smile.jpg More later but I promise I will try to keep it short!! |
what a sweet heart he looks GREAT what a diffrence .. you are my hero doing such a great job keep it up .. i love hearing about him he is in all our hearts to make a full recovery |
Ellen, thank you for the update. I searched the board specificially for any posts on Mr. M. I'm so glad I did! Thank you for all you have done for this boy. And I understand the cold food thing. I don't like cold food either, even if it's meant to be cold. Must at minimum be at room temperature. |
Hi Ellen......so glad you updated on Mr. Muffin!!! I still think you are AWESOME for all the time, patience, LOVE and devotion to Muffin. What a lucky dog. I can't help but snicker at how well he is training you. Another little trick for his pills.....take a couple cheezits or wheat thins, add a big gob of peanut butter to bury pills, (mine only like Jiff) and put the other on top to make a cracker sandwich. Yogurt, whipped cream, lemon curd, cheese spread also work. Yes, mine have me very well trained also. Keep us posted and MORE pictures!! How about some family pictures? |
Thanks for the update! I have one (OES Chewie) on doxy right now. (For a positive Lyme test a couple weeks ago) and I feel your sympathy with trying to get it in him, also the slightly ill side effect it gives. Chewie's not a big eater either, so I'm happy he's eating it twice daily in the pill pockets. He will eat it off his dog food, but if I try to give it to him by hand he's suspicious and tries to avoid it! I'm just waiting for the day when the pill pockets don't work and I have to get more creative with my bribery ...not! |
wow ellen, he looks great my solution for the pill pests was the plastic pill crusher and then liverwurst or p.b. and if the doxy is in capsules i just opened and sprinkled over something warm and yummy. i gotta take a pic tomm. of my buddy down the street so you can see how gorgeous muffin's coat will be in the next few mths. |
For Brick, I get a gob of peanut butter on my finger, stick the pill in the center of the gob, and then he licks it off of my finger and swallows the gob whole. He's NEVER balked at having peanut butter. |
guest56 wrote: i gotta take a pic tomm. of my buddy down the street so you can see how gorgeous muffin's coat will be in the next few mths. Would love to see that!!! I keep trying to imagine how he will look. He is just so cute when he gets excited, he prances like a little colt. All bouncy with his long legs, kind of like a gawky teenager. Oh I just love this guy!! All this talk of peanut butter has made ME hungry...and aware of just how incredibly picky my little brood is. I tried the p'butter thing and all my dogs just looked at me liked I'd lost my mind. Muffin took one sniff and all but rolled his eyes. He is very opinionated and his whims change in a snap. For example, yesterday he couldn't eat enough warm hard boiled eggs - this morning he begrudgingly downed one. I went thru the entire menu of items, til he finally settled on a boiled boneless chicken breast for breakfast and I was able to wrap his pills up in small pieces mixed in so he wouldn't notice. But later this afternoon, he didn't want any more of that and instead eventually ate half a can of Pedigree only because Kilo wanted something different... There for a while he was loving soup bones (the big hard round ones with marrow. I would get them warm in the dehydrator for all the dogs, then turn Kilo & Sweetie outside with theirs, so Muffin could happily enjoy his... the last couple of days he has wanted nothing to do with those bones... he is on a dehydrated chicken strip roll. When all else fails, I guess there's Dominos pizza - and they deliver!! |
I would guess the medication is making food taste bad. Not directly, but altering his taste. I had that with metroconizole and ciprofloxacin; everything tasted like verrrry green bananas to me. So maybe -just maybe- he's trying to find a food that tastes good. I guess this is what everybody means when they say a medicine gave them a metallic taste in their mouth. My doctor asked me if that's what I meant. I looked at her, shrugged my shoulders and said: "I don't know what metal tastes like. If it tastes like very green bananas..." and we both laughed. |
here is hector i take care of twice a week he has been shaved down but his hair is growing back too |
Ron wrote: So maybe -just maybe- he's trying to find a food that tastes good. Oh good point Ron! So maybe i should give him a green banana and it might taste like a steak??! When this is all over, he will have to be weaned back into being a dog for sure - suzptcruise wrote: here is hector i take care of twice a week he has been shaved down but his hair is growing back too Wow what a pretty boy!!!!! I think that length looks really good for Florida. |
Here's a pic of a goldendoodle at my dog park. His name is Snickers. For some reason, his tail was docked. Not like a OES, though. More stub like. |
CamVal1 wrote: Here's a pic of a goldendoodle at my dog park. His name is Snickers. For some reason, his tail was docked. Not like a OES, though. More stub like. I can see alot of resemblance in Snickers and Muffin, looking at the muzzle, nose, head shape, etc. Muffin's hair is more curly, kinky I think?? But it was kind of long-ish and not so curly before he got a good shave down, so i don't know. May be too soon to tell. Thank you for the pic. What a mystery! |
But I'm not sure MM's coat will look like Snickers' coat. His is longer & wavy-er, more like a sheepdog's coat. Judging by your new pic, MM's coat looks like it will be tighter curls. Like my sister's goldendoodle. This is Addy: Addy was just groomed before these pics were taken, but when she gets any longer, her fur begins to curl. I think MM will look more like Addy when his fur grows in. |

Thank you for posting all those photos!!! It's exciting to see what my "butterfly" will look like when he emerges from the cocoon! |
The pictures of the goldendoodles are adorable! Ellen, it seems like you are a short order cook! Do you really think you are going to get the furkids to eat regular dog food after they have been spoiled by home cookin........ Really?? |
So glad Mr Muffin is doing so well! I think he's definitely of the "doodle" variety! Here are some pics of my goldendoodle, Sam. They could be twins! Sam's fur gets super wirey, curly and almost nappy when it gets long...so we like to keep it short. The fluffy pic is when he was just over a year old. His "I'm better than you" look! Shaved SUPER CLOSE! Just like Mr M! Taken on his 1st Birthday! Mr Fluffy! |
dogmom wrote: Ellen, it seems like you are a short order cook! Do you really think you are going to get the furkids to eat regular dog food after they have been spoiled by home cookin........ Really?? HaHa I know, they are all being spoiled rotten by this!! Kilo has always been a picky eater, but shepherds have delicate digestive systems (at least mine does) so I have to be very careful what he eats - that doesn't mean he doesn't want goodies or dog food that's rich, he just can't have alot of it. Sweetie is over weight and would eat us out of house and home and eat anything we put in front of her, so I have to be careful she doesn't eat too much or the wrong "fatty" things... and then there's the Muffin man who turns his nose up at hamburger ... It is a circus here but the dogs will get through this... not sure about the 'short order cook' though New OES Mama wrote: I think he's definitely of the "doodle" variety! Now I can see why people who have them just love them. They have the cutest little personalities and expressions, don't they? Like Sam's fur, Muff is wiry and curly when it's short... I don't know how it would be long (groomed that is), but I think in muggy weather like we have in Florida, a shorter length would be better...but not so short he would get a sunburn. Thank you for the pictures!!! I love seeing other doodle babies |
Glad to hear everything is going well and Mr. M is on the mend! Cindy |
Thanks for the update! |
So happy to read all the good news and see his photo! You are amazing! MM is very lucky! Love the photos of the golden doodles! Haven't been here in a while. So glad to read good news! |
I have so enjoyed hearing about Mr Muffins's progress! Ellen, you and Scott are angels....and Muffin is such a lucky boy to have wandered into your yard. You have taken such good care of him and it shows! I know you must be exhausted balancing all the doggies and spoiling them rotten. Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking such good care of this boy who desperately needed it. He looks so happy now! |
I think Mr. Muffin is going to have to be renamed to 'Mr. STUD Muffin' |
My first meeting a doodle dog left me in love....he was being trained as a seeing eye dog and just so great! They are very smart and so loving! How much longer for his treatment? |
Thank you everyone for your kind words of encouragement!! It has always meant so much to me to hear you guys cheer Muffin (& I) on like you do. So many times when I feel like I am unraveling or buried in doggie issues, I have thought about all of you guys and it pulls me through it. dogmom wrote: :hearts: I think Mr. Muffin is going to have to be renamed to 'Mr. STUD Muffin' "StudMuffin" hehehe I love it! lhall15 wrote: My first meeting a doodle dog left me in love....he was being trained as a seeing eye dog and just so great! I never in a million years would have "chosen" a doodle...but like you, after knowing this guy I have learned how great they can be. With Muff's separation anxiety issues, it's hard for me to tell how much is SA and how much is just plain loyalty, because he rarely leaves my side. In fact, I love the way he will come stand beside me and just rest his head against the side of my leg wanting to be loved on. What a sweetheart. The vet says about 6 months for this type of heart worm treatment, so if that's the case, he has about 5 1/2 months left. |
aw, Ellen, you are so sweet, glad my story heartened you. I think because he is a doodle and has standard poodle in him, they are just really smart, and super super loyal. Mine became so bonded to me, and followed me everywhere.. they think they are lap dogs and yet, also our self appointed protectors. I love hearing your update, you could have a reality show with all your loveable charactors. The rescue that I have been helping to promote recently went viral. Perhaps some of you saw Fiona's story, it went around the world, in major news articles, in people, in perez hilton, cbs, abc, msn, yahoo, cesar milan, etc. And soon they will be appearing on Anderson Cooper. The rescuer is named Eldad Hagar, he is on facebook, and has a group there. Everyone here is so supportive and such wonderful dog lovers, that some of you might want to watch the video and support this amazing organization, hopeforpaws.org. Here is the link to the video that is getting so much attention.. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/2 ... 79889.html another one of his rescues, of a small dog living in a parking lot, will be on Inside Edition today! The great news is, Eldad and Fiona are headed to NYC to appear on the ANderson Cooper show, to tape a program about how amazing rescue dogs can be! Thank you for all that you have done, for Muffin Ellen. You are a hero too! xo wendy |
Just a note of encouragement My foster dog Nellie (a GSD who gave birth to 7 puppies dec 1st) Has been on the slow kill protocol I posted She got her first injection yesterday and I brought her home last night She had an enlarged heart due to the Heart worms so she was loaded She is doing fine She goes back in may for 2 more injections So mr Stud muffin will do fine |

(How are those cute pups??) GSD's are such great dogs. So loyal and smart. I hope he is doing good on his treatment. It's so hard on the family as well as the dog... Update on "Stud" Muffin: Hubby & I spent all day Sunday getting him in and out of the car using his ramp... little bitty drives with me sitting between him and Kilo in the back at first...around the block, then 1/2 mile, then to the store with me staying in the car. Then Monday, it was "test" time with me driving and he and Kilo in the back alone with Sweetie in the front with me...and he LOVES it!! From the rearview mirror I can see him grinning from ear to ear as he's looking around back there. In fact, everytime we walk by the car now he looks to see if the ramp is down so he can run up it and climb in the back I even ran into Publix yesterday leaving them in the car with the A/C running (and windows cracked a bit). When I came back he was so happy to see me and ready for his next big adventure on wheels! Thank you Lord, we were all getting cabin fever. I posted a couple of pics today, one taken at their morning breakfast... Today the menu was warm chicken mixed with warm steamed broccoli, sweet potatoes and carrots. http://i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii5 ... akfast.jpg LOVE those paper plates!! Life with the little bug is sooo good now - |
Ellen, looking back, did you ever think you would make this much progress in such a relatively short time? You are AWESOME!!! What a BEAUTIFUL Fur Family!!! Kilo, Sweetie and Stud Muffin So happy you are doing well. Has Mr.M been introduced to the McDonalds Drive Thru Yet? Nancy G |
i can't believe they all eat so close together so i guess they are getting to be real buds.. i am proud to have met( sort of) someone like you ..you are my hero |
dogmom wrote: :yay: Ellen, looking back, did you ever think you would make this much progress in such a relatively short time? Nancy, it's been THE most emotional roller coaster. But after your post, I went to my original post when I first came here to the forum asking for help in capturing Muffin and was surprised myself to see it has been almost exactly 2 months to this day. It has been a short time but it feels like just forever because of all the ups and downs and trials... dogmom wrote: Has Mr.M been introduced to the McDonalds Drive Thru Yet? What an idea! They have all had to give and take a bit...and then I have spent soooo much time with them lately being "SA homebound" and all, I have had a chance to really watch them and judge moods, personality quirks, etc. Like all of us, they have good moods and bad moods as well as quirks. For example, in our bedroom, we have 3 dog beds on the floor in different parts of the room. To get to their beds they must all walk past Muffins bed who is nearest the door. But he's a grouch when he's sleepy in his bed so if they walk by when he's already settled down he will complain and growl. We have to get him up (which is easy, I just walk out of the room and he follows!), then the other two can go get in their beds and he will then follow me back in and climb in his bed when I tell him to get in it. He loves his bed and I have wondered if he is being protective of "his" space or if he can't see well - or even if my baby is a bit bi-polar... but we just expect it now and work around it. He and Kilo ARE buds. At night, they will lie on the floor together or play in their beds like kids, just kissing and biting each others faces in play. I have seen Kilo come up to Muffin many times and just calmly lick the water from his mouth like a big kiss. Sometimes they get too rowdy and I have to tell them to stop running in the house - just like children. Sweetie is coming around - still a bit protective of Kilo if she doesn't understand they are playing, but she's calmed down considerably. It's really a pain-in-the-!&#! sometimes to deal with 3 dogs in our house but we love them all and would not dream of being without any of them now. Funny how life can change in a moment, isn't it?? |
Are there any more updates on Mr. Muffin? I have been watching from the begining and have not seen anything in the past 3-4 weeks. Is there a new post somewhere? |
I attempted to start a new post on 4/24/12 "ANY NEW UPDATES ON MR.MUFFIN" and haven't seen anything. Many of us who have followed the story, I'm sure, would love for this story to contune. With all of that love and devotion, patience, tears, hard work etc, we need more. It just can't stop. Also need lots of pictures of Mr. Stud Muffin and the whole family!!! Ellen, where you? Nancy G |
I would love to see a picture his coat must look awesome. |
dogmom wrote: I attempted to start a new post on 4/24/12 "ANY NEW UPDATES ON MR.MUFFIN" and haven't seen anything. Nancy G Oops, I am so sorry! I didn't see the post Nancy. spacegirl21 wrote: I would love to see a picture his coat must look awesome. I have taken a few pictures but they're still on hubby's phone. I keep forgetting to grab them to my computer but knowing Mr. muffin has friends eager to hear about him and see his "beautifulness" gives me renewed energy to post them on photobucket! In a nutshell: Mr. Muffin is my b-a-b-y!!! He is the sweetest, most loving, most loyal, dog in the world. (Okay, I admit I am biased, but he is the best dog I have ever known!) His separation anxiety continues but we work around it. I haven't had to leave him alone without a person nearby, and will do everything in my power not to have to do that, at least until he's is 100% finished with his heartworm treatments... but when I leave to walk outside, he will run to the different doors so he can watch me...and then he will run to the door he anticipates I will use to come back in. He doesn't bark and howl, he just gets a bit anxious. But the boy loves to ride!! And he sits up the whole entire time looking around, like he doesn't want to miss a single thing. And just grins from ear to ear the entire time. When I get out of the car, say to go into a store, he will hop behind the steering wheel and wait for me to come back. HE'S SO CUTE... He and Kilo are big buddies being they're about the same age. Kilo is my "wild child" - all shepherd - full of unbounding energy, so I have to keep my eye on the two of them, like you would two rambunctous kids. They like to sneak into the bedroom and play rough house on Muffins bed when Mom's not around Muffin is doing really well with his HW treatment. If I didn't know better, I would swear he wasn't sick, so God willing, he will make it through the next 5 month without a hitch. We have our little routines now, so I don't see too many issues. His coat is indeed growing out...and it's kind of a mix between soft fur and a wooly coat. The hair on his head is soft on top and around his ears and neck...the hair from the neck down towards his hip is wiry, then past the hips it is soft like it is on his head. He does like to be brushed, but he needs to be really clean for the hair to not be so kinky I think. I can comb him out and 5 minutes later, he's got the kink back on! I haven't been able to do much more than a "sponge bath" because he's terrified of water, as in a shower, tub or water hose, but a few days ago, I was able to at least pour water from a cup over his back in the driveway with a hose running, so that's a start. I have learned with Muffin that I have to let him think something is his idea, and then it's okay... So in time I will be able to get him fully in the shower, I am sure of it. I have gotten him away from junk food by experimenting until finally he has settled on "Chicken Soup for the Dog Soul". I bake 2 Green Wise Chicken breasts each day, pour the juice from the chicken over the dry food, stir it in to soften, then shred the chicken breast and stir it in the bowl. All the dogs love it this way and their bowels show it too! No gas, no diarrhea and lots of energy As for bones, I have been getting them soup bones from Publix, warming them in the dehydrator then removing all the marrow and fat. (yuck) They each get one before bedtime after dinner and they look so cute, all curled up on their little beds chewing their bones. There is NEVER any jealousy between them for food or treats. Sometimes there is for their stuffed babies, but we just make sure there's plenty of them to go around. It's a bit crazy around here as this house was never meant to house 3 big dogs and we step over them all the time (why do dogs always lie in the middle of the floor???), but we're being trained quite well My husbamd called me last night and said he spotted a stray dog near some railroad tracks as he was driving...it scared him when my interest perked up. I think one more dog and I would have a husband looking for a new home!! If I ever win the lotto, I know what I would want to do with that money.....!!! I hope everyone here is well and all your own babies happy and safe. God bless! |
Thanks for the great update, Ellen! You and hubby are doing a great job, and sounds like MM is trying to hold up his end of the bargain too! |
i am so happy to hear the update i remember when he would not go neat a car how cool is that he loves rides !! keep us posted when u can we all love him |

So Mr Muffin will do great It is a long process but so worth it!!!! |

That's all I can say... looking at the before and after shots of MM. How awesome. So happy for you both! Yep, our little Muffin has come so far. When we first brought him in, (with him terrified and reluctantly resisting the leash), he wouldn't even look us in the eyes for weeks. he would yawn, and stretch and turn his head sideways...anything but look us in the face directly. Now he pushes his face up into ours, kissing us on the face, neck, anywhere he can touch. This baby is just awesome. So sweet. he's never bossy with the other dogs and willingly takes a back seat in the pecking order. (Except when he wants our attention...then he's all but in our lap!) Scott said he heard/read that labradoodles are often used as hunting dogs because they have very "soft mouths". And I can see that is so. Even in the very beggining when he was playing with Kilo in the front yard while he was a matted stray, I could see him using soft mouth on Kilo...and that's how he kisses us. It's so sweet. The more I get to know him, the angrier I get at his original owners. Anyway, he's ours now. Good riddance to them I say. They never deserved him in the first place. |
I'll repeat the WOW!!!! Goodness who would have thought that was the same dog. He just looks so soft. I love his little curly hair. GREAT JOB to you and your Hubby!!!!!! |
thanks so much for letting us see how happy he is .. it brings tears to my eyes how he first looked and what he when through but all worth it for both of you thanks |
YAY!! I love the after pictures, makes me so happy to see him just living the simple life of being a ( beloved) dog! Well done! ~Wendy |
