New to OES

Hello , My name is Sandy and I have a almost six month OES named Jasper. He is my first OES and is very sweet. I do have a couple of questions and hope that some one can help.

1. Are all OES born what I call black and white and then turn gray.My Jasper was all black (Blue) and white and has turned a drak gray except for his ears they are still black. My groomer and I was talking and she said they are all born black and white and then turn gray. She said if you watch the dog shows you never see a black and white OES, they are all gray and white.

2. Jasper has a bad habite of eating his poooo and I have been trying to break him from this nasty behavier. So every time he goes I pick it up,and I think he thinks we are playing a game. Because he wil go three times in different spots.

3. Just any advice that may help on food ,training any thing thatmay need to be know or that will help.

Thank You

Welcome, Sandy! Boy, have you found the right place for all questions and problems sheepie!! Can't wait to see pictures of Jasper!

For the most part, yes, all OES's start off black/white and lose the black as they mature. There are exceptions, of course, but for the most part, it holds true.

There are all sorts of topics on this forum for any and all questions. Just browse and you'll find out more info than you can imagine. Threads on Medical and Nutrition, Behavior, Grooming, Training, etc., etc. Be prepared to become addicted, because once you start reading, you can't stop!

Yes, 90%---gee, 99% are born black and white and then change. Once in a great while one will be born more grey/blue. So, yes, your little dear is just fine. I call the black coat his black jammies. Late he puts on his gray suit.

As to the poo eating. There is a technical term if you care: coprophagia. If your doggie is healthy, then the digusting habit is out of boredom. You must break the habit now before it becomes a life long habit. There are products sold at pet stores or online pet stores. We old timers remember Lowery's meat tenderizer (is it still around?). The papaya extract in it helped break this habit. Also try MSG or anise oil on the food.

Of course you can't let the feces stay around. Pick it up immediately! Where is he finding the poo? If you are crate training and he's pooping in the crate, make the crate smaller with a temporary divider. They don't poop where they sleep.

As for the boredom, toys, toys, toys and play, play, play. Walks, runs, etc. A tired puppy has less time to think up ways to drive us nuts.

Now, if your dog was thin and unhealthy, the poop eating is oven a sign of pancreatitis. Doesn't sound like this is the case.
I am new to the site but not the breed, I have grown up with OES all my life. My grandfather had one when I was born don't remember Alfie, but I do remember all the ones that came after him. My grandfather passed away last year and I have sorta inherited his dogs as you know or should know you don't own them they own you! Now to answer your first question, yes they are born black and white, they do change to grey, but there are exceptions, my Gloria is a silver grey, beautiful dog with a white head, now my Meathead is more of a charcoal color but his ears are still really dark as is the patch on his eye, and he is 3 1/2 his groomer says that this will not change. Now for question 2, Meathead also had a bad habit of eating his poo, all he needed was a diet change, I changed his food and now he no longer eats his poo, my vet said they do that because they are missing something in the food, but talk to your vet before you make any changes. I feed my dogs Purina one Sensitve systems seems to work for them they like it and they have beautiful coats. As for training, he will train you well!!! :D
oh, Gloria sounds like Duster! Days after we brought little Maudie over from the UK, Duster came walking by the ranger station (with his owner). Our little 10 week old sheepie girl saw him and tore out after him, "Daddy?"

He was a beautiful light silver blue with a white head. (her sire was also that color) What a fine, gentleman he was, allowing that little imp to crawl all over him. Alas, none of my sheepies have been that beautiful silvery blue.
Gloria loves puppies, she lets them climb all over her, and she licks them and I swear it looks like she is counting there "fingers and toes" the only thing that seems to bother her is the fact that they have tails and she doesn't. She gives me this look as if to say what are these I don't have one! She is so cute!

Yes, better to stop immediately because many times if you're dog has had this habit for awhile ...the meat tenderizer stuff doesn't work. Worked for half of the dogs I know.
Meat tenderizer worked well for my pup. He won't go anywhere near his poo now. It is a myth that a dog is missing nutrients therefore he is eating his poo. It's just a habit they may start to develop very young and you need to break them from it as quickly as possible. Definitely helps if you're right there when they do their business to also try to stop your pup in the act of eating it.
