Explain as you would to a child...

Ok, seriously, I've never had a long haired dog. And from what I see from most photos on the board, people here seem to have their OES in full coat, or shaved to the skin.

So, what is a puppy cut? Is that the shaved look?

Help the noob out here, I want my dog to have some hair, but it's freaking hot in New Mexico, and I love the fuzzy fluffy look.

Is puppy cut something in between long flowing rapunzel like hair, and naked dog? Would I still be able to let the kids put pig tails in her hair if she's puppy cut?

Post me some pics pretty please?

Simply put, a puppy cut is hair that is only an inch or so long. Fluffy but not a full day's work to brush and main tain and still very adorable!

This is pretty much a puppy cut, on Bloo from the UK -

This is Ryleigh at Christmas. Puppy cut but can still put in bows and pigtails

this is a shorter summer puppy cut.

I usually use a 1/4" guard on my clippers. Gets it kinda short at first but by a week its already grown out.
Ok, yeah, I think that's what I'm after. I assume I could ask the groomer to leave the bangs long, and it won't look stupid?

That actually looks do-able for a New Mexico dog. Do you still get massive matting problems when they're puppy cut? I guess what I'm asking really is - I want to sometimes take my dog down to the Rio Grande River, it's kind of a dog haven around here, everyone lets their dogs splash around and run about. I'm terrified of getting her wet, and worried she'll end up one big massive clump of matts. It looks like it might be less of a problem with the puppy cut?

Thanks for the photo and reply Vance, I swear, I will eventually learn. I'm a "researcher" by nature, and I am determined to know all I can about OES's before this puppy arrives, lol.

Thanks Kristin, she's ADORABLE!

Ok, mystery solved, thanks guys!
they will still get tangles with puppy cuts but not real bad. Pretty easy to just brush them out.
Little shorter throughout the body and flare to the legs. I am partial to these cuts  .

Unless we get more moisture, she'll be playing in the sand instead of the water in the Rio. Either way, you'll be washing the sand out of her, that's for sure.....and the clay from the water. If she is mat free before she goes in, she shouldn't mat up afterward. Dry and comb her out.

OES are rare here, most groomer panic. They want to shave. If you bring them in mat free there is no excuse for shaving. OK, behind the ears, belly OK, it doesn't show.

The problem will be going from puppy hair to adult hair........you will shave. You have to groom nearly every day during this period, like someone with a show dog......because that transition is the PITS!
So they blow their whole coat in the transition from puppy to adult? I've been reading some of the horror stories, lol. Eh, couldn't be worse than my huge Maine Coon cat. I must brush 20 pounds of hair off that cat twice a week.
It's not a blow...I know blow from my other dogs, but a transition from puppy fluff to the beginning of the coarser adult with the undercoat. Sheepdogs don't blow but rather the dead hair needs to be groomed out.......continually. In my mind (which probably isn't true) sheepdogs have "hair" in that it doesn't stop growing when reaching a certain length. Other breeds with predetermined hair length have "fur" or some other term of choice and have the once or twice a year blowing of old coat and "underwear"...undercoat.
I love the puppy cuts!!

Question about them, do you still have to line groom them when they are in a puppy cut?

You don't have to at first but as they start to grow out a bit you really should. Especially behind the ears. ear leathers & the legs & feet.
Ahhh, so more like molting, lol. Gotcha. Well, I guess I better go look at brushes! Thanks everyone!

Pin brushes with no balls on the ends of the pins (for the body). Soft & stiffer slickers for the legs, feet & when the mat fairies start to visit :)
I have to show the first picture of Simon in a puppy cut at 9months old

Its my favorite!

Don't do bangs. They look really dumb.

Proof positive:

  He looks like the cartoon sheepdog George. I always loved that cartoon growing up.

If you do bangs just put them up in top knots then they look ok. I leave Ryleighs a little longer so I can put bows in her hair- which she isnt real fond of.
