Do you talk to your dog?

So this morning....I dive into a box of Crispy Creams. Oh happiness abounds as #1) I have never tasted them before but have heard about them from you guys here occasionally.

#2 We had just taken our cat to the vet and after a lenghty wait (there was power outages all over) and I hadn't had a morning coffee. Kaj volunteers to go across the street to pick up coffee and yum... a Crispy Creams place across the street from the vet! (cough cough reminds me of the post about sending men to the store as he returns with a dozen for just him and I). The box gets placed in the car as it's us with our cat and 5 dogs waiting to see the vet. :D

#3 Arriving home I sit down and Merlin immediately sits near me. I bite into the most wonderful delicious donut and look down at him and say ...No buddy you're not getting any of this ....it's all mine.

Kaj responds with "but I bought them to share."

Ummmm Kaj I wasn't speaking to you...I was talking to Merlin.

With that we both looked up and burst out laughing.

I often speak to the dogs without thinking about it. How about you guys? Any embarressing moment in which you thought you were alone and speaking to your furkid when it turns out you weren't?

Love to hear your stories.

I can tell one about David! He was home alone with Mady and 'pocket phoned' me by accident. For half an hour I listened to him and Mady chat about his day and whisper sweet nothings to each other. As for me, I talk to the girls all the time and they often answer!
Oh Kim. How patient you are to be butt dialed and listen to your
Hubby charm and sweet talk another woman :-)
  Oh yes--conversations even!

One of my first memories as a little girl- is of my grandfather 'talking' in another voice for his dog and then answering his dog in his own voice! :D and of course he passed it down to my dad who gave each of our animals a 'voice' and we talked to them all the time. It was just normal in my home growing up for our animals to 'talk'. Quite entertaining and fun.

When I married- my husband was quite used to it by then as he had been around the 'talking' animals as we dated and he was in my home. He just naturally picked it up and so all of our animals have had a voice. They often carry on quite interesting conversations between themselves and with us. Over the years it wasn't unusual for my Dad's cat or dog to call my cat or dog and have phone conversations. :D

It is a family thing as all my cousins on my father's side of the family have 'talking' animals too--we often get together and the animals carry on quite interesting conversations! Our children were just not quite sure that they were going to carry on the tradition--until they got their own pets and now yes they all 'talk'.

Only family and really close friends get to 'hear' our animals 'talk' because we really don't want people to conclude that we truly are nuts. But when friends have be so privileged to have a conversation with our pets-they generally really get into it and enjoy the conversations.

One of the first things that my children asked me when Murphy arrived was...is he going to keep his Canadian accent??? Not sure this Tennessee girl can pull that one off-

We really are completely normal people in every other way! :? :?
Oh gasp you guys are cracking me up with your post! I loved all the stories..keep 'em coming!

Marianne
Going to keep his Canadian accent. lol...ehup. Love the dogs have their own voices.

I do talk to my dogs all the time. Yes, they do talk back to me in "dog". There has been many times when Chuck will answer me or ask what I said and I tell hm "oh I was talking to the dogs."

My dogs easedrop on my phone calls as well. When it rings and I answer they listen and I can tell by there response when I hang up. Sometimes they get up to go to the car, even though I didn't say anything to them or they stay laying. When they are going with me somewhere, I'm careful not to say it on the phn because they start getting excited as soon as I get off the phn. No I'm not crazy, I'm really normal.
I talk to them all the time, and speak their answers out loud for them. I find myself doing this all the time on walks...then I pause and look around to see if anyone can hear the crazy lady 8O
I think most animal owners talk to them. I talk to Bob (my horse) a lot. I've stopped answering though. I've also decided that talking to him in baby talk or talking about nonsense is really annoying so I've cut down on the chit-chat. I talk to him about things that may upset him (like "the vet is coming but she's giving you a shot to make you feel better) and I tell him what our plans are for the day (we'll graze, then ride, then you can go back out with your friends). I truly believe animals can communicate, but there has to be "clear reception" and babbling just clogs up the airwaves.

Ok I admit I talk to my girls all the time... I don't speak their answers though!!! :P :D
Sure do and we also talk for them. We understand each other quite well.
I talk to them all the time.
Todd has crappy hearing and at least once every day he says "what?" and I answer..."I was just talking to the dogs"

Funniest time for me was a long time ago - I was 21 and had my 1st dog all my own after graduating from college and at my 1st job. I managed a large laying hen farm, and had my own house on the farm to live in. I had just gotten Jenny, my GSD puppy. I had a tie out for her when I was working and it was nice out - so she didn't have to stay in the house crated all the time while I worked. But then I worried if I was in the barns and a rain cloud came along...so I got her a dog house for emergency shelter. 8)

But I noticed she never went in it.....so creative me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled in and out, talking to her, showing her how it was done......and then I noticed my boss (and he was a vet) had pulled up, and was sitting in his car, watching and listening to me!!! 8O
He was laughing SO HARD!!!
The rest of us are shaking their heads, seeing ourselves crawling in and out too.....you are among friends here Dawn, like thinkers.

I remember crawling up and down steps when I delivered a rescue.......dog was raised in AZ and didn't know steps. The new owner didn't say a thing but probably wondered about me.

Of course we talk to our dogs......and several have trained me to respond to their specific grunts, chortles.....and yes, even barks. DH will ask me, "what do they want?" Quite often I know exactly........let's go snuggle on the bed, I need to go outside, where's Dad, etc
I think the bigger question is who doesn't talk to their dogs (or cats, or horses, or . . .), especially under stress.

My mother-in-law lived with us for a while. I never heard her talk to the dog until I passed by her with a box full of liquor bottles I was getting ready to lock up (from her, for the record), and she looks at our guy and says, "Where do you think she's taking those, Max?"

Fortunately, Max gave her the "Don't ask me, I'm just the dog!" look.
yesterday i came home and listen to my messages and one was from a friend he said """ hi dreamer hi duffy ruff ruff and for 2 min, he talked doogie talk to my boys .. never did ask for me?? i came home and listened to it and of course they ran to the phone and when crazy when they heard it again.. still don't know why he called i guess to say hi to my boys lol
I always talked to panda. It was a one way convo. But in the am before leaving for work I would give her, her chore list and every evening we would have to discuss why she didn't complete them..

I still talk to her. At this moment it's more of a prayer. Panda, PLEASE send me a low key easy puppy.

Every night I tell her I miss and love her.

Yes, who doesn't? They tilt their heads when I talk to them. They really they try to understand. I also sing to them. That gets them running!

I

I'm sure their tongues are wipping off the counters as well. Duffy and Dreamer are very good, perfect boys.
I talk to them and sing to them and frequently answer for them too.

Often they help me out by telling their Daddy things that might be awkward for me to. As in when I translate for Hudson by saying, "Dadddeeee, you need to get up off your lazy bum and FEEEEEEED us. You're already half an hour late and we're staaarrrrving. You don't expect Mommy to do it after all that housework she did today while you napped, do you?"

Works every single time.
I remember when I was a kid growing up in a one parent household. My mom worked the 3-11 shift and I'd often be alone with my dog, Snoopy, a big mixed dog. I only saw my mom for 45 mins in the morning before school and on the weekends. Nowadays this wouldn't be allowed (regarding being left alone) but I was 12 and had an older brother and sister (who always were out) and it was a different time, when parents didn't get subsidies for daycare and my mom was really struggling to raise 3 kids. I always talk about my childhood as I felt like Pippi Longstocking. I also was a huge fan of the Dr. Doolittle books and wanted to be just like him when I grew up! LOL! Instead I had my animals and they made me who I am today. :O)

I remember my most heartfelt conversations with Snoopy and I think he understood every word I said. I'll never forget that wonderful dog leaning on me with my arms around him....just talking.

I loved all your stories...they've made me laugh and smile.

Thank you for sharing!
