As for myself I live just south of the Twin Cities, and I work for a locally owned pet food supply store, which I LOVE As for the dog, he's a 6 year old Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Frodo I bought him when I was 16 years old and boy has it ever been an adventure. He was bought with the intention of being my sport prospect, instead he has been a behavioral project! He has reactivity issues with both people and other dogs. At this point we have worked through enough of his human issues that he can go into public and not have a reaction to people. After learning that human interaction = treats, he will now go up to complete strangers, muzzle bump them, sit on their feet, and demand to be pet because he knows it means he gets food, even if he has no real interest in being touched by them. Our issues with other dogs are coming along as well, though at a slower rate. He can be very reactive while out on walks when he sees strange dogs, but once introduced properly he has very appropriate doggy social skills and loves to play! Frodo and I train in nosework, tracking, and we will hopefully soon be able to take an agility foundations course. Though his true love will always be nosework! We also do a lot of hiking around the Minnesota state parks. I don't think that I'll be ready to add another dog for at least a couple more years, and even then, who knows if an OES will be the right fit, but I hope you all don't mind my hanging around and commenting on all of your picture threads I'll also be hanging around the "Advanced Behaviors and Tricks for Beginners" area a lot, as I do plan on my next sheepie/dog being a sport prospect! Mainly agility, but my interests are far reaching (skijoring, rally, herding, carting, backpacking, more tracking and nosework of course!) and I'd love to get an idea of just what an OES is capable of And I hope you all don't mind non-OES pictures every once in a while either! Woe Stay by laurenscoombs, on Flickr Dying because he had to hold his stay for a photo session in front of his birthday muffin. Welcome to the forum, I dont mind see picture or your beautigul corgi ! I own one also her name is NO, No , Noel, well is really only Noel, but you know Corgies hehehehe Am looking forward to see posted more pictures and adventures of lttle Frodo |
I like Corgi's too, I have never had one but do know they like to herd, the same as an oes. One of our local weatherman has a new Corgi puppy and she is ruling the roost. He is definitely in love. |
Welcome to the forum!! Many of us have other pets besides sheepies. I too, am from MN., TC area Nancy G |
OES can do lots of different things (though not many owners do much with theirs for whatever reasons, but it's not because the breed isn't capable). One of the most versatile ones around lives up your way, more or less (Mankato) Dawn's been sick, but I'm sure she'll see your post sooner rather than later. She does carting and weight pulls and sledding with Chewie (OES), along with other things, though she has misc "other breeds" as well. Suggest you get in touch with the Twin Cities OES Club and plan to go to their specialty in June, if you can. It's usually on a Friday, though. A great group of people. Dawn is a member and can put you in touch. Welcome! And nice job with the little fox. Adorable pictures. There's a (retired) OES breeder in Montana who now breeds PWCs, so if you ever wonder how the two breeds get along as a general rule, let me know and I'll dig up Nancy's contact info for you. Kristine |
Not sure if I'm sooner or later.....but I'm here. Yes, you can do lots of stuff with your OES. And other dogs too. I enjoy doing what the breeds are meant for, but also pushing the envelope and doing more! Another new person was asking if an OES is right for them - and also had activity issue questions. I posted a whole collection of photos showing most of the sports we do. Rather than redoing it, here's the link: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=36810&start=15 I'm near Mankato - and also very active in MN/WI dog sports. As Kristine mentioned, our Specialty (OES only show) is in June - Friday June 8th. We will have conformation, obedience and rally competitions. Another option is that we (TCOESC - Twin Cities OES Club) will be at the TC Pet Expo this month - March 24-25th at the Mpls Convention Center. We have a booth there, and club members will be manning it both days with dogs. I will be there late morning to close on Saturday with my two - 5 year old Chewie and 5 month old Bond. I can get you more info if you are interested. Welcome fellow Minnesotan. ps - if you want to do any more sports with Frodo, just ask away! |
Welcome to you and Frodo -from Tennessee! |
Welcome to you and Frodo from Illinois! Cindy & Teddy |
Welcome from washington! Your corgi is adorable! Alot of forum members have all sorts of different adorable lovable fur babies that arent sheepies. I occasionally post pics of my hound and my wolf hybrid. Oes are highly trainable and many on the forum do therapy work, herding, agility, obediance, etc |
Welcome! |
Frodo is wonderful!! Love the ears, the eyes....... We are not snobs here, we love dogs.......of course we favor the hairy ones but since many of us clip our hairy ones down to "nekkid" every so often, we are not hung up on hair. I'm sure Chewie and Bond will appreciate another fuzzy cousin......when it happens. |
Thank you for the warm welcome everyone! Monica, I would love to see some pictures of your corgi! Kristine, I did take a look at the TC OES specialty website page, and it is REALLY close to where I live. I will definitely be requesting off to go meet a bunch of OES! Thanks! Is the TCOESC an active club? As in, does the club hold regular meetings? Really what I'm wondering is if that could be a way for me to get more involved with the breed at this point, even if I don't own an OES of my own? I have done quite a lot of obedience stewarding in multiple venues since my dog can't actively compete, so I wouldn't be a completely worthless member Dawn, I will be at the Pet Expo on Saturday! I've had it on my calendar for months, and I will definitely stop by your booth and say hello! My boyfriend's sisters go to Mankato University, I've been down to visit them a couple of times, it seems like a really nice area. I live in Burnsville and work in Shakopee at Chuck & Don's, if you know that area at all Frodo and I have lived in Minnesota for just over a year now (came from Pennsylvania), and we love it! Frodo thinks the winters here are just great, there is no "too cold" in his vocabulary. Last winter it was -23 degrees out and he was rolling around on the ground The heat is our downfall, Frodo doesn't tolerate it well at all, partially due to being so close to the ground, he just soaks up the heat :/ and I wish someone would have told be about the humidity before I moved out here! lol I definitely have plans to continue the sports that I am doing now with Frodo, as well as adding some new ones when he is ready. My ultimate goal is agility, and honestly he is probably ready to start, I am just overprotective. We have taken a weavers class taught by a friend, and he was able to work off-leash for the duration of the class without issue. I want to get into a foundations class, I'm just working on finding the right instructor to work with Frodo and I. There is a trial in July at SoccerBlast in Burnsville that I would love to enter him into (I believe it is NADAC, which means we could run tunnelers, he loves tunnels!), but we'll see. He has been to a couple rally trials hosted by my club (Minnesota Mixed Breed Dog Club) to get more used to the trial environment, and has done fantastic. I have hope that we will eventually compete! |

Thanks for the complements, I will pass them on :p I am very excited to one day own a breed that requires more grooming than my corgi (though he does have quite a spectacular shedding ability), before I moved to Minnesota I apprenticed a Bedlington Terrier breeder for a while and learned how to show groom Bedlintons. I loved it! I would be very excited for that aspect of an OES. And I do plan on eventually owning a Bedlington, though it won't be until Frodo passes on, I have enough terrier-like traits in him for 20 dogs |
Welcome. Don't worry about not owning a sheepie in this forum. I don't have ANY dog and how many posts do I have????? LOL |
Yes, we (TCOESC) are an active club. I'm the club secretary, also, BTW! In addition to the Specialty in June (in conjunction with the Lake Minnetonka KC show that weekend - in Jordan at the Scott CO Fairgrounds), and the Pet Expo Booth this month, we also will be having a club meeting/TDI/CGC test and dog playtime and potluck in May - May 6th here in Mankato at The Paw (I teach classes there as well). I do tons of MMBC events and know that group well |
Awesome! Do you allow members who don't currently own OES? And who probably won't for quite a few years? What venues do you compete in? I don't think I've seen you at any of the MMBC hosted trials (though I certainly don't make them all, I work some weekends), and by that I mean I haven't seen any OES :p Do you compete in APDT at all? That is mainly what I steward, though I have also done CPDT, UKC and AKC, and I am being pressured into being the trial secretary for the July APDT up here! Out of curiosity, what classes do you teach? |

Out of curiosity, what classes do you teach? TCOESC - yes we do. We have several members currrently dogless. We do: AKC - show (CH), obedience (CD), rally(RAE), CAT (non-sighthound lure coursing), agility(in Exc for std and JWW, open FAST) UKC - show (CH, 2 BIS), obedience, weight pull (CH) AHBA - herding (HCTs) CPE - agility NADSR - weight pull (CH) Therapy dog we also do competitive pack hikes per Malamute club rules, dog sledding and dryland carting. All the above with Chewie... little Bond is just 5 months old and just getting started. Our 1st OES did herding, obedience and some showing in conformation, and was a therapy dog. I also compete with my basset Simon (who just died at almost 13 yr) - RE, therapy dog; rat terrier Riley - RN, therapy dog; and our lab and bluetick run with the sled dog team too. And Biscuit the lab does WP too. I teach obedience classes, but also do WP, backpacking classes too. At The Paw in Mankato - http://www.thepawmankato.com |
oh, and MMBC friends ... Carol, Heather and Karl, Lissie, Denise and Al, Niki, Deb, Dawn...off the top of my head...I really should join! They are a great group |
I *almost* took Lissie's last foster puppy Stormy (AussiexCorgi) home, but it just wasn't right timing! I know Dawn as well The others I know by name and on FB. Megan (used to run 2 Springers, they are elderly now) is one of my best friends. Sara Reushe and Crystal Thompson are the other two from the club that I would say I know the best. Small world! |

Hello and welcome Val from Essex,UK. Tia Lincoln Esher |
Welcome from St. Louis! You have a beautiful corgi and awesome pics! Since you work at a pet food supply store.......Is there any way of getting coupons for the prescription dog food ZD? It costs me $92.00 per month. When you add in prescription meds, grooming, vet visits, etc...it gets very costly. Thanks. |
