Crufts 2012 Vetting Controversy

Any one following the controversy at this years Crufts? Apparently the KC instituted a new rule that requires all Best in Breed winners to be examined by an independent vet to ensure that winner is a genuinely healthy and sound dog. So far a Clumber and a Mastiff have failed this exam. Should make the BIS an interesting time.

Still a great show. I was watching live internet feed while chatting WITH Sam at lunch yesterday. That was fun to interact with someone from across the globe while watching a live event.

Yes. And it doesn't concern all breeds. Just 15 breeds on the hit list this time around. I'm sure the judges are delighted to have their judgements overruled by a cursory exam by some vet, who may or may not have a clue. Owners too

I'm all for healthy dogs. And some of those exaggerated characteristics concern me (flat nosed pekes don't breath as easily as their longer snouted brethren, no; but this is not something you can change in one generation, you work with breeders and judges) And what exactly is the objection to Clumbers???? And how is the clumber that won any different than the ones that did not in whatever regard they have now decided is objectionable??? You don't just label a dog "unhealthy" and don't say based on what criteria exactly. I hope the breed clubs affected sue the KC, and I hope the rest of the breed clubs support them, since any breed can be next on the hit list. Way to throw KC breeders AND judges under the bus.

As an American (OES) breeder judge commented to me just this morning: how long before the animal rights fanatics decide to add "excessively coated" breeds to their hit list? It's just a PC way to render our dogs extinct, one breed at a time. The AKC has also been observing and the delegates are being told in no way, shape or form would this outrage be perpetrated here.

Sounds good on paper, maybe. Outrageous in practice. The KC has apparently lost its collective mind. It will be interesting to see how these (to date) targeted breeds respond.

Other than that I am also watching the agility, in particular, and it's a blast. A great event celebrating ALL dogs, marred by this stupidity.

Just my personal opinion 8)

Back to blow drying my excessively coated and excessively piggy puppies.

I don't think it's a bad idea at all..... maybe we would stop seeing crippled to an almost deformed level german sheperds, breeds that cannot breed or whelp naturally, breeds that cannot breathe properly, breeds whose skulls are so unnatural they no longer protect their brains.... I think it should be fair and include all breeds. Too bad they can't rule out things like HD, other genetic abnormalities with a simple exam though so a lot will still go unnoticed.
But what exactly caused these dogs to fail the exams? Actual
health problems, cosmetic changes, or something else?
Some of the criteria seems to be common sense and that it should apply to any dog that is the best representation for the breed. Disqualification if a dog can't breath/lack of exercise tolerance, lameness, the chronic dermatological signs, eye conditions.

Quote:
Clinical Signs:
• Externally visible eye disease
• Lameness
• Dermatological disorders
• Respiratory distress

Surely these exams are carefully documented to show proof? Wow... the legal ramifications if the opinion is wrong. 8O The Clumber was lovely... after watching an interview with the owner, it'll be interesting to learn if it was just a temporary irritation due to competing and heat or due to bilateral ectropion. http://www.dogworld.co.uk/product.php/67059

So does the BOB award then go another dog?
