For us it is just a waiting game -- she's had pneumonia 12 times (she's 5 and half). We treat the pneumonia and wait for the next one. She's currently resistant to clavamoxx, and now has moved on to baytril when needed. I'm not sure if there are any specific answers I'm looking for, but I figure if anyone knew anything it would be someone on here. After all, my vet did tell me that in Vet school her instructor told the students they'd be lucky to see one dog in their lifetime with PCD. Not sure how I got so lucky as to have a frenchie with it. But, I am still lucky. She's an amazing dog. Any advice for us? |

Less common conditions make finding support/answers more difficult. Though this condition has been discussed here, I don't recall anyone here having a dog that was diagnosed with PCD. Someone here may still be able to to direct you to someone with first hand experience. You can also do a search of this site to bring up PCD discussions. Did you notify the breeder after getting the diagnosis? He/she does need to know. Kristine can share more but genetic screening is now available... at least for OESs. viewtopic.php?f=15&t=36700&p=494922&hilit=pcd+genetic#p494922 OESCA (national breed club) information on PCD- http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamer ... inesia.php There are other breeds that are unfortunately affected by this condition... you might also post on boards that focus on these breeds... Quote: Primary ciliary dyskinesia is most commonly diagnosed in young dog and has been reported in many breeds of dog including the English pointer, English springer spaniel, English setter, Border collie, Old English sheepdog, Doberman pinscher, Chihuahua, golden retriever, Newfoundland and bichon frise. Best wishes to you and your frenchie. |
Thanks for the response. I have tried to notify the "breeder" but they are non-responsive. My dog has other genetic problems too (syringomyelia, most commonly seen in cavaliers), hip dysplasia, allergies, etc. so I don't think there was ever anyone reputable behind my dog, unfortunately. Was hoping to find someone here with experience, frenchie people have ever even heard of PCD and after a lot of searching I haven't found anyone who has a dog with it -- aside from a youtube video. Anyway, thank you. |
did you try contacting your closest vet school?? they are more apt to have come in contact with this disorder and may help put you in touch with others that have dealt with it. It is worth a call at least. |
Hi my dog has PCD too. He is a real mixture of breeds, pug, fox terrier, poodle and bichon frise. He is 5 years old now and we nebulise him twice daily in a cat carry box using saline solution in the nebuliser. He is also on antibiotics daily which is not ideal but we try to keep infection at bay. We also coupage him daily. Not much fun for him but he is such a happy little dog and we just try to keep him as well as we can for as long as we can. His cough worsens each winter but that is to be expected. Good luck! |
