This camera captures info at many (all?) distances simultaneously, essentially an unlimited depth of field. You don't focus before you take the shot, you focus AFTER you take the shot... when you're looking at it, and you can look wherever you like in the picture. You can single-click on any picture to focus on that spot. Start with the spider -- click around the pic... or just go to the next or previous pic by clicking on it on the left or right side. https://www.lytro.com/living-pictures/279 The first generation of these cameras is available for purchase at $400 or $500. https://www.lytro.com/camera |

I tried to get another person to buy one for me and I don't think it went well... maybe Uncle Ron can get everyone here one. I desperately want one after hearing about it. |
That was a fun and interesting start to my day. Thank you Ron. I may have completely missed the point of living pictures but once the picture is focused perfectly to suit, is it printable? A series of the same picture with a different focus would be an incredible wall display. Or is it just for computer use only so that others can play with your photos and experience Lytro? I realize this is the beta model so to speak, so enhancements may be coming. I can only imagine what Mrs. J could do with this camera. I too, think you should have one so we could enjoy your pictures even more Sorry for all the questions, but this early, my coffee is still fresh within |
My understanding is that as of right now it is more of a computer based way to show off you pics. You can print them but the quality drops quite a bit. They are working on software improvements so you can have the entire picture in focus, that would be very cool..but not being able to print quality pictures is a bit of a downer..considering the price of the camera. And the software only runs on Mac's right now.. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-201 ... g=mncol;9n auntybren wrote: That was a fun and interesting start to my day. Thank you Ron. Wow. Great technology.....and the pictures are really fun. I wish I could spend that kind of money on a toy. It really is very cool, but it is only compatible with mac computers and can't print a clear picture any larger than 3 x 5. Maybe they will continue to improve this camera into one that does all the normal stuff (print good quality pics, be compatible with many systems and photo editing software) and keep all the cool stuff it can already do. Then I would buy one. Well, if I could afford it.......because once it can do all that the price will surely go through the roof. Oh well, one can dream. Mrs. J, I agree Ron should get a few to share with his oes.org buddies |
Thank you Mike for the link. It does give a great overview of things to consider. Still, impacting technology, I will be following the buzz. |
Mrs. J and I want a product review! I photograph commercial products so I was interested when Val mentioned it. I was told files are saved as a .LFP... Light Field Picture file. I read that they can be converted to JPG format but you of course loose the ability to adjust the picture focus... for me, it's still a plus. Good to know about the print quality isn't up to snuff yet... thanks for sharing that! Hoping they'll get that figured out because it's a neat toy! I can pass on fancy phones... I still have a old TracFone ... but cool cameras are a different story. |
Supposedly they have had conversations with phone companies about putting the technology into a cell phone...which makes perfect sense! I think that when it's converted to a jpeg it saves as a 1.2 megapixel photo.. It would be incredible to have that technology in my DSLR...of course I saw no mention of that!! |
The pixel or megaray density should improve dramatically over time if this technology were to become popular. Right now they simply MUST get a windows version up and running, then a software option that might be able to process an image to focus all parts of the picture at once, that would be a selling point in my opinion; an option for (near) infinite depth of field essentially. If they don't have that already. 6Girls wrote: I photograph commercial products so I was interested when Val mentioned it. Val? Which Val? Someone I know has one???(Hey we're a dog site; we oughta have a drool emoticon, no? Ewwww) |

And I agree with your points about needing a Windows version of the software and the ability to focus the entire picture. As of now it's just a fancy way to take pics for FB and such.. Don't get me wrong, I would take one in a second just because it's really really neat! |

I'm a little jealous, Val!!! Do take pics to share with us! LOL Here's what I saw when googling for drool icons (drool emoticons, drool smileys, whatever ) First page: Not bad! (What's that one with a camera?) Second page... Hmmm Gorgeous woman, hot sports car... baby? Third page... Car exhaust header pipes? Woman with a gun? Bread? |
Sorry! We were without power for 14 hours yesterday and my wireless modem got zapped... I missed your question Ron. Ron wrote: I'm a little jealous, Val!!! Do take pics to share with us! LOL Mrs. J and I have already pestered her to do just that! |
