Kaj grabs my arm and says in a panic..."you'd better get back inside, those were gunshots!" I protested and told him they weren't. We both return inside (dogs hadn't gone out) and sit back down. Mins later, our house and street are surrounded by 17 emergency vehicles, the surrounding streets are blocked off with police cars with flashing lights and a 4 block radius is cordoned off with yellow police tape, as is our driveway! Kaj and I peer over our fence and try to ask what's going on but suspect by now it's a major crime, but the officers are too busy searching with flashlights and police cars to even talk to us. I finally ask one person if they are looking for a person or a thing (like a dropped gun perhaps?). He says someone will be over later to talk to us. Worried that perhaps someone is hiding in our yard we head back to our home which fortunately Kaj locked before going outside. 3 am we are kept awake by flashing lights as our street is still blocked off. The next morning they are still there as well as 5 camera crews at the end of the block. We heard on the news that morning there had been a murder and the suspect escaped. I was so stupid to run out in retrospect and thankfully as far as I know, the person didn't run down our block but escaped via another route. Gives me the willies to think either myself or Kaj could have been out in the yard (where no one sees us due to the tall hedges and high fence so that people often mistake our yard for a park.) No one ever did come to the house and speak to us...and truthfully I'm glad I never saw a thing. |

scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you are SO like me..lol...i did something very similar to that brian was at work, so i was home alone with panda...i awoke to thud, thud, thud...panda didnt bark...i go into the kitchen and look out the window...i hear a louder thud thud thud..so i turn my house alarm OFF, open the back door...panda runs out into the backyard, barks and races back in and knocks me over..i hear tires squeel on the other side of my block fence....i call the cops, they show up but couldnt find anything....(i seriously thought someone was cutting and dumping a body in the trashcan in the alley...) where as your story has a very scary and sad ending, mine was just dumb!! sometimes being intrigued after dark, hearing an unusual noise, is just not a good idea.... New rule to live by......dont turn all of your lights on, lock all doors, keep phone handy and always have an alternate exit route..... did you know who was murdered? |
Yea Kaj!! Now that you know the sound of gunfire, please stop running towards it! I know you are "wired" to help but this time you could have had a murderer in your home! Darcy too, don't investigate, call the police but keep yourself locked up tight......and yes, that secondary escape. Was talking to neighbor one day at the fence when someone fired off a full clip, rapid fire. Eyebrows went up, "AK47?" I asked. "Yep" was the cops reply and we continued talking as if nothing had happened. I'm not saying gunfire is common here, but common enough from idiots who want to test their guns in the back yard, or slaughtering a steer, to know what different gun fire sounds there can be. |
Very very scary! Glad you are all ok-- In the moment sometimes the facts just don't register-- |
The news reported it had been a targeted hit and it happened across the street from me. That's across the long side of my yard which has no gate but is fenced in. (Sorta the same area where my fence was crashed into a few years ago by a car), which is what may have been on my mind when I ran out. Some of you may recognize this photo which I used as a Christmas card a few years back. The home where the man was killed is next door to the larger house you see on the right hand side. There is a smaller rancher next door and that's where it happened. I didn't personally know them other than wave when I see them, as my yard is aprox six feet deeper than the sidewalk and with the high fence I never see my neighbors on that side unless I'm working on the outside of the fence. However, when I trimmed the shrubs and was painting the fence on the outside last summer the man asked if I needed any help. The woman has a joyous laugh which I often hear over the fence and recognize it's her from the daily walks I take past their home. Very sad and makes me question if the suspect targetted the wrong person as they just seemed like a nice couple. |
Boy, if you ever needed a sign to tell you that moving was the right thing to do, you sure got it! |
Dang, that's really scary. |

Groaners Ron! We were lucky we weren't out in the yard as it happened a few mins before 10 pm.Not that late, and ironically 10 pm was the time we always took Gilligan out for his last nightly walk/bathroom break before bedtime. I still don't know the details as the police haven't released any more information, but as horrible as it was to happen so close to home, I also know it can happen anywhere. I feel for the people who live in that larger home next door to the rancher as they are a nice elderly couple whose grown son and his wife live two doors away on the other side of the rancher with their grandkids. I'm sure it affected that family as both lived immediately next door to where the incident happened. |
Egads!!! How scary for you and good for Kaj for recognizing the sound. I guess its a good thing you're moving. |
Heard the same thing from the townhouse 2 doors down from us years ago. Yep, definitely time to move! |
Wow Marianne, how lucky were you? Sorry to hear about your neighbor. I hope things settle down there now. We had some excitement here last night as well. As most people know, we live out in the country and while most homes are far apart some are close by. Anyway, last night the doorbell rang and my daughter answered, it was the police all dressed in black with the word POLICE across his chest/back in white. He said our neighbor on the corner, which I can see from my office window if I really looked, had been burglerized during the day. I guess there was a broken window in the front. He told my daughter, that they weren't really sure if there was a true breakin. Anyway, I was home most of the day and never heard or saw a thing. I had the windows open and my dogs bark at most things. I am so greatful I have these three big girls! There is usually someone here and awake 24/7. He just reminded us to keep things locked up. Oh and my daughter said he was "hot". lol |
Glad you are all safe and sound. |
Whew! I'm glad we're okay too . For the first time since Sunday evening, the police have now left the area and hopefully I'll be able to not get antsy when I take the dogs for their evening walk. I always lock my doors...even going out in the yard and I feel semi-safe with an alarm system and 3 dogs. At least the police were impressed with Snoop as he was wagging his tail like crazy and didn't react at all to the police dogs. (Only mention this as slowly people might change their mindset that all are vicious). This is the same dog however, that Roared at the crazy guy yelling inchoherently and racing at me with scissors in his hands. I feel relatively safe with Panda and Snoop around but Merlin...well ....he's Merlin. Sheesh.....now thinking about that incident ...perhaps it is time to look forward to moving. |
