Long story short, someone has made a commitment on my behalf without consulting me! It's not the first time, and this person does it to plenty of people besides me. I've actually found out about previous commitments by finding my name in a press release - surprise! I called her out on it - again - and got exactly the response I expected. "Oh, I knew you would want to do it," followed by two full paragraphs of bull-hockey - excuse me, flattery. "You're so good at . . ." "You have such insight . . ." "They'll be so excited to have you . . ." Yeah, I'd be thrilled to drive 3-hours round-trip (with gas nearing $4/gallon!) so I can run a 1-hour masterclass for a bunch of disinterested high school kids. |

Well, I think the solution (now that you've vented) is to let the person in charge know you will not be doing this "committment" & the person that volunteered you did so without your approval. Simple as that. |
Well said Marilyn You are not letting anyone down, you were never consulted and " have" prior committment that can't be cancelled. Let the volunteering (so-n-so) earn a reputation of unreliability....in fact I think it is the obligation of that person to find a replacement or go in your place. |

And the person that volunteered you services, what is she doing? I agree with Marilyn and Susan. You have a prior commitment and was never consulted. My mom use to say, "you can alway be busy picking your nose". My mom was full of many 'pearls of wisdom' |
I like your momma! |
While I would LOVE to tell her to pound sand, it's a bit more complicated. This is part of a grant they got to pay for a piece they commissioned (I was never told this was part of the grant proposal). I've written and delivered the piece, which will be premiered in 3 weeks, but without completing this or a similar workshop, they don't get the grant monies, which means I don't get my commission. (That's the problem with funding in the arts. The funders put too many strings on the money.) If I hadn't finished and delivered the piece already, I would absolutely tell her to take a flying leap. I do plan on filing this under the "never again" heading. I'd rather pass up the next commission from her than deal with this nonsense again. |
