Hank is having another skin issue- eye scabs. We have been dealing with his allergies, or so I thought. He is allergic to beef and that was being well managed, but in the last few months, it seems he has been losing the hair around his eyes and he's been rubbing them on everything. At his annual exam in Dec, I pointed the issue out to the vet who said it was likely seasonal allergies causing him to scratch, but that she wasn't that worried about it. So we've just been trying to wait it out. Tonight I noticed that his left eye has gotten pretty ugly. It's red, scabby, and weepy. I emailed the vet to get him in tomorrow, but is there anything I can do for him now? |

Poor baby. You can try an icepack, wrap it in a wash cloth to prevent frost bite. The ice will help calm the itching. Twenty minutes on, twenty minutes off. |
don't know what meds he's on, but do you think Benedryl might help? |
I didn't think to try benedryl, I will get him some at lunch today. |
Poor Hank...that looks sore and itchy. I'd say try some benedryl too until you can get him in. Sounds like you have been busy; some sad, some really good! Congrats on the upcoming wedding for sure!! |
Poor Hank! I hope you're able to get him some relief. Looks painful. My condolences on the loss or your Mom and Rabbit. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. It's great to hear from you and I'm sure you do have a lot to say that we'd enjoy hearing of. Maybe tell us about the excitement of your wedding or post some pics of your cute Hank. It's always so much more fun the more members that participate and we can get to "know". |
I hope Hank gets better soon! |
We went to the vet last night, they think its just a bigger seasonal allergy reaction than usual. He's on prednisone for a week or so, and some neo-poly-dex for the sore. Then after that he will probably go on a benedryl/fish oil plan to control his symptoms. |
Hank's itching seems to be getting better, but he's lethargic and his eyes are dialated, is this a normal reaction to the Prednisone? |
What dose of pred is he on? Lethargy can definitely be a side effect, as well as glaucoma and other eye issues. As far as the eye problems, not sure if that is only a long term effect. I would give the vet a call. Whatever you do, especially if he is on a high dose (20+ mg), make sure you wean him off the pred, rather than stopping cold turkey. Abruptly stopping pred can create some nasty consequences, so we always err on the side of caution. Laurie and Oscar |
He was taking 10 mg twice a day, but it was only his 3rd dose. I did not give his his AM dose today and I called the vet first thing. They said to keep him off the Pred for now, but were seem more concerned about his eyes being so dialated. Today at lunch I went home to check on him- he is still moving slow (yesterday he could barely lift his head) , but his eyes are back to normal. There is a different vet working tomorrow and they are going to talk to him about it in the morning, then call me. So for now, I guess we just wait... |
Poor Hank! I hope he feels better soon. |
