Sheepielooza travel question

Anyone else driving a long distance? If so, how do you pack a crate? Its the size of my car!

I'm not sure what to tell you but I'm so glad you are coming  Would a soft side travel crate be more workable? It won't be an issue on the way home, Pru will sleep all the way back!!!!
I'm assuming you have a plastic crate?

Does she normally travel in it?

If it's plastic and she needs to be in it (and it is safer crated), then you will need to pack it in and pack around it.
If it's plastic and you don't need it for the trip, separate it into the 2 halves, and put the door and bolts in between the two pieces (keeps them all together and not lost, and minimizes the door rattling). Then pack stuff in the crate pieces - hardly will use up any space extra.

If you have a folding one - same for if she needs it in the car, otherwise fold it and unpack it once you get to St Louis, or an overnight stop point.

If she is trained to use a soft side crate, they are the best. But if you haven't used one, you definitely need to practice. Number one is she can't be a dog who chews on or scratches with her nails at her crate. She has to accept a crate calmly.
Then you want to get one and work with it. Have someone near so if she starts to be naughty, she gets corrected and stops the behavior immediately (and this is assuming she's a happy crate dog - so some correction won't bother her views on the crate, just stop the behavior.)

Mine travel in the back seat, and have soft crates. I am hoping by May that Bond will be fine in a soft crate, otherwise I will be toting a folding metal one too. :?
She will travel in the car. I guess I am thinking even folded the crate seems gigantic to put on the top... But...that is where it will go I guess :) Do the soft sided ones get smaller that the folding crates?
I have the ABO Gear Dog Digs soft crate, two of them, actually. Here's a link with a video: http://www.petco.com/product/111502/ABO ... -Dogs.aspx

I love it because it's lightweight and folds up really small, has a carrying case with shoulder strap and is really easy to set up and take down. It is really important that your dog is a calmly crated dog. Both Bella and Simon are very crate trained and do wonderfully in them. I have the large size and they have plenty of room to lie down comfortably.
Brick's metal crate is huge. 48" long, 36" tall, 30" wide.
I actually would put BOTH Brick & Zeke in there. 8O It's that big.

When I came to Sheepiepalooza last year, I rented a Buick Enclave, mainly so I could get the crate in there.
But the Buick is a big vehicle. Too big. Plus it had the bucket seats for the second row. The boys couldn't get comfortable.

So this year, I plan to rent a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. They're smaller, so it should handle better. And it has a bench seat for it's back set, so the boys will have some place comfy to lie down.
The downside is that I won't be able to bring the big crate. I'll have to bring the soft crate. It's much smaller and of course, collapsible. Only one dog at a time in this one.
It's cheap though. I picked it up at a Wal-Mart. I think it cost like around 30 bucks about 4 years ago. I'd be afraid to leave a dog in there unattended or outside as they could probably scratch their way out of it.
:clappurple: Thank you for the link and the tips! Looks like a soft crate for the trip is the way to go! Pru is very good in the crate, so I don't see a problem with that. We will buy it ahead and let her get used to it before we go.
I have a Dog Digs crate too! I love it. Mine is much lighter, as it's all screen - the only solid side is the floor.
This is the only picture of it I have -

It is not very sturdy - the price I pay for super light...but Chewie just lays in it and chills. He's my hot dog, so full screen on 5 sides is a big bonus!

My other soft crate is much sturdier, and that will be Bond's crate. It's the one Biscuit, our lab uses at weight pulls for his crate. I got it on the pet dept at Fleet Farm - it was quite cheap but very well made. It has made it for about 4 years with various crazy dogs...so I'm not complaining!

What kind of car do you have? I don't think a crate would ride that well on top of a car...makes me cringe it would be really hard on your paint! If it's that big, perhaps borrow a smaller one (that she still fits in!) for the trip?
