| Hi All, One of the most important things you need to do when you fly with a pet as baggage in the hold is make sure everyone is aware you are traveling with a pet. When you arrive at the gate after you have checked in your pet and gone through security let the gate agent know you are traveling with a pet in the hold. When you board the aircraft ask the flight attendant to remind the captain that you have a pet in the hold and to please let you know when the pet has been loaded (the captain is always given this info by the ground people). If they close the boarding door and you have not been told your pet is on board ring the flight attendant call bell immediately and ask the flight attendant to verify the pet is boarded and if not why! When you land tell the ground agent meeting the flight you have a pet in the baggage hold, ditto when you get to the baggage claim area. Many times you have to go to a special pick-up area for pets traveling in the hold and the baggage agent will tell you where to to go to pick your pet up. I have flown many times with my pets with out any problems, but I am vigilant about letting everyone and I do mean everyone know that I am flying with a pet in the hold. I also make sure to watch the baggage loading process. I always ask for a window seat on the right side of the plane in front of the wing so I can see the baggage being loaded once I am on board. Pets are always loaded in the first hold on the right side of the aircraft and should be one of the last "bags" loaded and one of the first unloaded. I work in the airline industry and was told to do this many years ago by an experienced station manager and it has always worked for me. You are an important part of the pet's traveling process. Sorry to be so long winded, but I felt this was important. Kathie PS this also applies when you ship a pet as cargo. Stay at the airport until the aircraft leaves and you have confirmed that the pet is on board. Everyone has radios and they can keep in touch with the ramp people and let you know the pet has been loaded. Same thing on the arriving end. Make sure you are there before the flight arrives and have them radio the ramp people and let them know there is a pet on board and it should be brought in immediately. Don't let anyone forget your pet, which is when the trouble usually begins. |
