Not sure what you mean by DNA records? The American Kennel Club requires DNA on file for identification purposes for frequently used sires, if a breeding was done artifically, or if the dog was an import I think may be the main requirements, but don't quote me on that. The Old English Sheepdog Club of America holds semi-regular DNA collection clinics, but that DNA (blood) is collected for possible health research purposes. This is banked (stored) so it can be available for future use. If you go to the OFA website (where most health screening results are listed) you can see a DNA number which indicates the animal has been collected. As an example: http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1338985#animal Kristine |
We don't do that in the UK as our ( World Famous ) Kennel Club are a bit slack on that. So you could have a fake dog & other things as they don't check |
OK, so DNA for identification purposes. I think they started doing so in the US in response to high volume breeders. There are AKC inspectors who do random checks, and they were apaprently noticing a lot of situations with the paperwork was not in order - not show breeders, typically, but puppy farmers, as I believe you refer to them, and even high volume BYBs - and that makes you wonder what else they weren't keeping track of, eh? - and so once the technology became (more widely) available it probably made sense. Chances are the KC will catch up. If you could see my backyard bred rescue OES you'd wonder what jumped the fence there, maybe some sighthound? Though in all likelihood she is purebred and probably produced by whatever Old English her breeder had at hand - she didn't come with papers - as she's pretty typical looking of back yard bred OES in the midwest. Who knows? Wisconsin rescue actually ran one of those DNA test for breed - hesitate to speculate how reliable they are - as we had a bitch come in from a high volume breeder who has other breeds and vet (OES breeder) and I both thought she looked suspiciously half poodle, but DNA test came back purebred OES, so who knows? kristine |
I think the KC club in the UK have there heads in the sand & think the problem will go away. It would help to monitor these puppy farms/fake dogs. You could regiter as a breeder & how would they know if you own any dogs at all. They never check & the KC have alot of money so they should invest the money |
