I am SOOOOO happy that I read this book before I bring home my little girl in July! I know it will be really hard to stick to Jan Fennels technique, but it is so logical, and makes so much sense. I am the cuddly pay too much attention to my dog type, and I can see in the past my whole family has had dogs with seperation anxiety etc. This book really lays it on the line and says...look, your dog isnt a human, so dont confuse it with YOUR expectations and humanistic ideals. I really really appreciated the advice and am going to rear my dog this way. I am however concerned because I am all signed up for puppy class and am worried that they are going to not adhere to the training the way the book says and my pup will be utterly confused... What do you all think Thanks for all the input! Lauren |

I would just call whoever you signed up for training with and ask them about it. Tell them what your plans are, what your expectations are, and ask if their training methods and techniques will coincide with your own plans... good luck! |
Remember that dog training books are like child rearing books, not everything works for everybody. You have to try different techniques and use what works for you. I am a huge fan of the book but have also incorporated some other tried and true training into our plan. My son just adopted a rescue cocker spanial which significant difficulty with submissive peeing. I told him about the book and it's suggestions and was amazed when he called me last night to say that in just a week the behavior had all but dissappeared.
Good Luck!! |
Thank you for the information re. the Dog Listener. I hope to have a boy puppy in June and I can't remember much about puppy training as my dear Bentley was 14 1/2 when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
