Cost to feed a 80lbish dog?

I am curious how much it cost to feed a high quality dog food to a dog about 80 lbs. I was feeding Laika Orijen for almost a year before I stopped and switched to RAW. I cannot remember the price. Just wondering how much you spend a month. I am hoping I am not spending much more. Not that I would change. But I am just wondering. haha maybe I don't want to know.

Hello,

My OES, whom I call Tristan, now approaches 90 lbs. Last week the vet suggested he could loose 10lbs. which we are doing slowly. I liked the weight gain, as he was so thin when I rescued this pitiful, hapless, doggie (<60lbs) way back last June.

So, I have cut back to about one and a half cups morning and one cup in the pm. Down from about 6 cups per day at the advice of some helpful persons on this forum, and the Veterinarian. And the toxic fumes have become almost non-existent.

Further, I only feed Eukenuba Adult ,and a milkbone x three. So it adds up to about $50,per month. Or $1.50 per day. The Airedale ate for <$1 per day last decade. When somehow he gets upset and produces something unspeakable..... I can switch to rice and boiled chicken for a while, but have yet to analyze the costs for this concoction, as this is the same type of food that I eat and the shelf life is short.

When the 'spent fuel rods' are firm and easy to pick up the next day, it is my opinion that all is GOOD with Tristan.

art,
are you a nuclear engineer by chance? 8) lol

We feed Orijen. Two sheepies. One is 108 pounds and the other is 82 pounds. They ear 1 cup am and 1 1/4 cup PM. I buy the 30 pound bag and it costs me about 85 bucks delivered to my house. I am in the US so not sure if it costs less in Canada. We probably go through a bag or so a month I think...
When it was just Mady, we were spending roughly $50 per month, on Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Shredded Blend.

Either you have one big markup in price out there, or they are sticking you with a huge delivery charge! :twitch:
Orijen Adult 29.7# bags sell for $68.95 here!

I personally never calculate what it costs to feed the dogs (or the cat, the sheep, llamas, chickens or even us humans!) If we have them as part of our family, they have to be fed and fed well....costly or not! I do not buy the most expensive stuff, but I'm a stickler for ingredients and quality, and shop smart. :D
When you feed raw you have to take into account that other freezer   By purchasing your meaty bones in bulk, you have quite a bit. The veggies come from CostCo, Otherwise that bag of carrots lasts a life time for just two uprights. The tripe, also bulk. Vitamins......Costco again. I no longer have the $ per raw feed, I found it slightly more expensive but the results were worth it until I hit 7 dogs...then it was just silly.

Unless your dog is out droving sheeping or herding, doing agility daily or other high energy activities, they don't need that much food if it is nutrient dense.

Funny re: Art: anyone in Colorado Springs is aware of Cheyenne Mountain and the NORAD command center......air defense command plus Air Force Academy on the north side of town, Ft. Carson on the south and the Peterson AFB on the east and Shriever AFB further east, part of the space command. They are well protected.
We feed out goofy group basically 1/2 raw and 1/2 kibble, not in the same meal or same day.

Feeding our group EVO(Ripley gets Innova LB Puppy) runs around 1.90-2.20 per day depending on variety purchased and the individual dog. 12 to 14 ozs is the general kibble amount. When feeding raw it is 1 and 1/4#s to 2#s per day depending on the dog.

As long as we limit the raw feeding to chicken, pork meat and beef heart we can come pretty close in price to kibble feeding. But, we go with the greater variety is better thought. So our freezer always has rabbit meat, lamb hearts and sometimes other even more exotic meats.
Thanks for the info. Just curious to how much it would cost for kibble if I wasn't that far off. I will never change from RAW I see the benefits.

New protein source this month. Mackerel! Should be fun watching the dogs eat these guys.

Smackerel!! Dogs smack their lips for mackerel......thus......smakerel! That was my secret weapon when Paige would be in an eating snit......she never turned down the oily fish
This will be my first time feeding whole fish asides from sardines from a can. The menu says Saturday they have the mackerel... can I wait? haha exciting life!

Does your menu guide include feeding green tripe? Ripley hasn't had it yet but the others go bonkers when they catch a wiff. And it is really kinda fun to hear them eat raw vs. kibble.
Hello Guest 56,

NO!!!! I am not a nuclear engineer.

Just a retired old guy after almost 40 years Gov't service. With the mind of a 16 yr old boy, or an OES puppy; on a budget.

Along with the body and spirit of a mature American man; I hope.

Is the monthly plan something you made up or from where you buy the food?

Iz and Tay also eat raw, but they get whatever I remember to thaw 8) I do make sure that the diet is balanced over time. I order from several places and have a full and interesting looking freezer in the garage 8O :excited:
The plan is from the place I order from http://www.totallyrawdogfood.com/SampleMenu.aspx

It is pretty much bone type food one day, meaty next day.
That menu looks like it really provides alot of variety.

When we were 100% raw, the group got a good variety but often the same meat source for a couple of days in a row. Organ was the only part of the diet that we deliberately scheduled.
