When we try and use the wipes he runs and hides if he can, or if confined will try and and fight us off. We are very calm with him and soothing and don't push it too hard. Can anybody suggest a way of getting him over his wet wipe phobia . While his ears are fine now being a sheepie he may need drops etc. in the future. I would rather get him comfortable with ear cleaning and ear tending while he is only 7 months old than when he is older. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated. Cheers Debs |

Gently run a finger around upper part of the ear canal... careful if you have long finger nails ... see if you get the same response. Might have to try it a few times. If there is none, wondering if the wipes sting or maybe the temperature of the wipes. I can't use an alcohol based flush in a couple dogs ears so I use one that is alcohol-free. Sometimes have to test different products to see which one is gentle but still cleans properly. You might also try getting the wipes to more of a dog-body-temperature just before using them. |
I was going to say the same as Jaci. Warm them 1st, as the ear is very sensitive to cool temperatures if into the ear canal. I always warm any drops and even the ear wash stuff I use for cleaning. I personally don't like using wet wipes on my dogs. I have old white washcloths (so I can launder them in bleach) that I wet with nice warm water when I spot wash on my dogs. If appropriate, I use a soap too - like in ears that may be a bit greasy. Then use the rinsed rag to remove soap and dirt, etc. I find the wash rag holds the warm temp better, and my dogs all prefer it. They all (except 1) love their ears to be cleaned out. And you sure are right in wanting to get this resolved now! |
Thanks Dawn and Jaci Really great advice. Tried thing finger thing with his ears and he is very comfy with it. So tonight will gently introduce a warm wet cloth and see how it goes. Thanks again. Debs x |
